Chapter 5: The Woman Who Raised My Dead Brother

I stood there with the phone against my ear, unable to move.

The woman’s words repeated in my mind.

Your father didn’t hide him from the world.

He hid him from you.

For years, I believed my father’s greatest failure was leaving too soon.

Now I wondered if leaving was the easiest thing he had ever done.

Because dead men could not answer questions.

Dead men could not defend themselves.

Dead men could not admit they had lied.

“Who are you?””

The woman on the phone stayed silent for several seconds.

Long enough that I wondered if she had hung up.

Then:

“My name is Evelyn Cross.””

The name meant nothing.

But the reaction around me did.

Marcus looked up sharply.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Maria froze.

I noticed.

“You know her.””

Nobody answered.

My grip tightened.

“You all know her.””

Marcus took one step forward.

“Rocco, don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t what?””

My voice was low.

“Don’t listen? Don’t ask questions? Don’t find out why everyone around me has been living with secrets?””

He stopped.

The woman on the phone heard him.

“Is Marcus there?””

My eyes narrowed.

“How do you know Marcus is here?””

“Because Marcus has always been close to you.””

The way she said it made my stomach tighten.

Not like a friend.

Like a piece on a chessboard.

“You’ve been watching me.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I’ve been watching the people watching you.””

The room became colder.

I looked toward the windows.

Every shadow suddenly felt different.

Every person outside felt like a possibility.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the safest answer.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had become obsessed with safety.

Safe house.

Safe location.

Safe distance.

Safe lies.

“You all keep saying that.””

The woman went quiet.

Then she said:

“Because your family has always confused control with protection.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

My entire life, people had made decisions around me.

For me.

About me.

Never with me.

“What do you know about Ethan?””

Her breathing changed.

A small reaction.

But I heard it.

“I know the boy who was blamed for something he didn’t do.””

My eyes moved toward Marcus.

“What did Ethan do?””

“He found something your father wanted hidden.””

“What?””

“The truth about Vale Holdings.””

My jaw tightened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because everyone knows pieces.””

“And you know the whole thing?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Then why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

The answer came instantly.

“You should trust evidence.””

I looked at the tablet.

The files.

The photographs.

The recordings.

The pieces of a puzzle that had been hidden from me.

“Where can I find evidence?””

“Blackwater Ridge.””

My heart stopped.

The place where Ethan died.

“The old estate.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father left something there.””

“What?””

“A confession.””

The word sat between us.

A confession.

Not a message.

Not an explanation.

A confession.

“What did my father do?””

The woman hesitated.

Then:

“That depends on what you believe happened twelve years ago.””

I felt anger rising.

“My father is dead.””

“Yes.””

“So tell me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you before you see it, you will only believe the version of the story you already built.””

I hated that she was right.

Because I had spent years creating a simple story.

My father was difficult.

My brother was reckless.

My family was complicated.

I was the one who survived.

But maybe survival had only meant I was the last person to know.

“Why call me now?””

The woman became quiet.

Then she answered:

“Because Noah heard the same thing Ethan heard.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“Your son found the beginning of the same secret.””

I looked at Noah.

He was watching me.

Confused.

Scared.

Holding onto Maria’s hand.

“What secret?””

The woman lowered her voice.

“The reason Ethan disappeared.””

The call crackled.

Then she said:

“The reason your father made sure you never looked too closely at your own company.””

The line went silent.

“Evelyn?””

No answer.

“Evelyn?””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus said:

“You can’t go there.””

I looked at him.

“That’s your first concern?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because if you go there, everything changes.””

I walked toward him.

“Good.””

He looked surprised.

“Rocco.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’ve spent years making sure everything stayed exactly the same.””

I pointed toward Victoria.

“She lied to me.””

Then toward Marcus.

“You lied to me.””

Then the phone.

“Everyone lied to me.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m done protecting the version of my life you created.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Rocco, you don’t understand what your father was involved in.””

“Then help me understand.””

He looked away.

That was his answer.

Again.

Maria stepped beside me.

“Boss.””

I looked at her.

“We should leave now.””

I nodded.

“Prepare the car.””

Marcus immediately reacted.

“No.””

I turned.

“Move.””

“Rocco, listen.””

“No.””

“You don’t know what’s waiting there.””

I stared at him.

“Neither do you.””

His silence confirmed it.

He knew enough.

Not everything.

But enough.

Victoria finally spoke.

“Please don’t go.””

I looked at her.

Her face was different now.

Not confident.

Not controlled.

Terrified.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because Ethan wanted you to find the truth.””

“That sounds like a reason to go.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“It means he wanted you to find it when he was ready.””

I studied her.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What did Ethan tell you?””

Victoria looked at Marcus.

This time, I didn’t need to ask.

I knew.

She had been afraid of Marcus.

Not because he controlled her.

Because he knew what she was hiding.

“I’m waiting.””

She whispered:

“Ethan told me your father’s death wasn’t natural.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had forgotten how to breathe.

“What?””

“Your father didn’t die in an accident.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Victoria.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I’m done.””

Then she looked back at me.

“I’m done lying for everyone.””

The woman I thought I knew was breaking apart in front of me.

But I didn’t know if I was watching regret.

Or fear.

“What happened to my father?””

Victoria’s voice shook.

“Your father was investigating someone inside the company.””

“Who?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“I don’t know.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then she added:

“But Ethan did.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

I opened it.

My entire body went cold.

*“If you’re going to Blackwater Ridge, don’t bring Marcus.””*

I looked up.

Everyone saw my expression.

Maria asked:

“What is it?””

I showed her the message.

Her face changed.

Marcus took a step back.

“Rocco…”

I looked at him.

For the first time, I didn’t see my oldest friend.

I saw a man standing beside a locked door.

A man who had spent years convincing me not to open it.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody answered.

Then another message arrived.

Same number.

This one had a photograph attached.

A photograph taken moments earlier.

Of my car outside the building.

With someone standing beside it.

Waiting.

I zoomed in.

The person was holding a folder.

And on the folder was a name.

*Ethan Vale.*

But Ethan was not in the picture.

The person holding it was.

A person I recognized.

Someone who had been in my house tonight.

Someone who had cried with me.

Someone who had claimed she wanted to protect my family.

Victoria looked at the image.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

May you like

Her face went completely pale.

“Because she died with Ethan.””
