Chapter 8: The Message From the Dead
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I didn’t care that Claire was behind me.
The only thing I could hear was Rachel’s voice repeating in my head.
*Lily disappeared.*
My daughter.
My little girl.
The same child who had stood alone in front of an entire church because she knew nobody would believe her.
The same child who carried her mother’s final warning around her neck for three years.
Someone had taken advantage of that.
Someone had used Emily’s name.
I reached the front door of the old house and stopped.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I turned sharply.
“Don’t touch me.””
Her face fell.
For a second, she looked hurt.
Then she looked scared.
“I know who sent that message.””
My anger froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
“Not here.””
I stepped closer.
“My daughter is missing, and you’re still keeping secrets?””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“You think I want this?””
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
That was the truth.
I didn’t know who was lying.
I didn’t know who was protecting me.
I didn’t know if Claire was my enemy or another person trapped inside Emily’s mystery.
But I knew one thing.
Lily was somewhere alone.
And every second mattered.
“Who sent the message?”” I demanded.
Claire looked away.
Then whispered:
“Someone who worked with Emily.””
My stomach tightened.
“Marcus?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
She looked at me.
“Someone closer.””
The answer made no sense.
Everyone connected to Emily was gone.
Or so I thought.
My phone rang again.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
“We found her.””
My knees almost gave out.
“What?””
“She’s at the old house.””
I froze.
“What old house?””
There was silence.
Then Rachel said:
“Daniel…”
Her voice became softer.
“She’s here.””
I looked around.
The hallway.
The stairs.
The empty rooms.
My eyes moved toward Claire.
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“Lily said she was following her mother’s instructions.””
My heart stopped.
“What instructions?””
“She said Emily told her where to go if Claire ever came back.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Emily.
Even after death, she was still protecting our daughter.
“Where is she?””
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“In the basement.””
The basement.
A place I had avoided for three years.
A place I never entered after Emily died.
Because that was where we kept the things we couldn’t bear to look at.
I ended the call.
Claire watched me.
“You know now.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Why Emily chose Lily.””
My anger returned.
“What are you talking about?””
“She trusted Lily because Lily saw things adults ignored.””
I didn’t answer.
I walked toward the basement door.
It was at the end of the hallway.
Covered in dust.
The lock was broken.
I stopped.
Because I knew I had locked it after Emily’s death.
Nobody should have been able to open it.
“Claire.””
She stood behind me.
“Yes?””
“How did you get inside this house?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
“You had a key.””
Her expression changed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I told you.””
She looked down.
“Emily left things behind.””
“You had access to my house after she died?””
“I had access before.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked away.
“I was there before.””
The words made my stomach twist.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She whispered:
“Before Emily died.””
I stared at her.
“You were in our house?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because Emily invited me.””
That made no sense.
“My wife invited you?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she invite the woman she feared?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because she was trying to save me.””
The basement door suddenly opened.
Both of us turned.
A small figure stood there.
“Daddy?””
My heart broke.
“Lily.””
I ran.
She rushed into my arms.
I held her so tightly she complained.
“Daddy, I can’t breathe.””
I let go immediately.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“But I found something.””
Of course she did.
My daughter had spent the entire day uncovering secrets adults had buried.
“What did you find?””
She looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“Mommy’s room.””
My face changed.
“What about it?””
“There was a hidden place.””
Claire went pale.
“What?””
Lily pointed downstairs.
“Behind the wall.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Claire.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her face said something else.
She knew this house better than she admitted.
We went downstairs.
The basement smelled old and damp.
Boxes covered the room.
Memories.
Years of our life packed away.
Lily walked toward the far wall.
She pointed.
“There.””
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed it.
A small crack.
A section of wood that didn’t match the rest.
I touched it.
It moved.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside sat a small metal box.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
There was a name engraved on top.
Not Emily.
Not mine.
*Charlotte.*
Claire stepped backward.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know this box?””
Her face lost all color.
“I thought it was gone.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Letters.
And a small envelope.
The envelope had one word written on it.
*Daniel.*
My hands trembled.
Another letter from Emily.
I opened it.
*Daniel,*
*If you found this, then Lily was brave enough to bring you here.*
I looked at my daughter.
She stared at me.
The letter continued.
*I need you to know the truth about Charlotte.*
Claire looked away.
*She is not the monster you think she is.*
I stopped.
My eyes moved to Claire.
She looked shocked too.
The letter continued.
*But she is responsible for the biggest secret in our family.*
My heart pounded.
I kept reading.
*The night Lily was born, something happened. Something nobody told you.*
I froze.
Lily’s birth.
My happiest memory.
The day I became a father.
How could there be a secret?
The next line made my hands go numb.
*Daniel, Lily is biologically yours. But she is not biologically mine.*
The basement disappeared.
I couldn’t hear anything.
“What?””
Lily looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
It didn’t change.
*Lily is biologically yours. But she is not biologically mine.*
I looked at Claire.
She was crying.
“You knew.””
Her lips trembled.
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
I laughed.
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
She stepped closer.
“Emily knew she couldn’t have children.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“Before Lily was born.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“Emily was unable to have a child.””
My hands shook.
“But Lily…”
Claire looked at the letter.
“Emily loved Lily from the moment she saw her.””
I couldn’t understand.
“What are you saying?””
Claire whispered:
“Emily adopted her.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The little girl I raised.
The little girl who had Emily’s heart.
My entire world shifted.
“But why hide this?””
Claire answered quietly.
“Because of me.””
I looked at her.
“What did you do?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“I was Lily’s biological mother.””
The words destroyed the room.
No.
Impossible.
I looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
The woman who pretended to be pregnant.
The woman who tried to marry me.
The woman connected to Emily.
“You…”
My voice failed.
Claire nodded.
“I gave birth to her.””
Lily stepped back.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
She looked terrified.
“You’re lying.””
Claire’s face broke.
“Lily…”
“No!””
My daughter grabbed my hand.
“Daddy said Mommy was my mommy.””
I dropped to my knees.
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“She is.””
Claire cried.
“I never wanted to take her away.””
I stared at her.
“Then why come back?””
She looked at the metal box.
“Because Emily left something unfinished.””
“What?””
Claire pointed inside.
A final document sat beneath the letters.
A birth certificate.
But it wasn’t Lily’s.
It was mine.
No.
Not mine.
My name was printed on it.
And underneath was a second name.
The person listed as Lily’s biological father.
I read it.
And my blood ran cold.
Because it wasn’t me.
It wasn’t anyone I knew.
It was a name that explained everything.
A name connected to Emily’s death.
A name Claire had been hiding from me.
A name that made her fake pregnancy, the wedding, and the lies suddenly make sense.
I whispered:
“Who is this?””
Claire looked at the paper.
Her face filled with fear.
Then she said:
“Daniel…”
A pause.
“He’s the reason Emily died.””
And upstairs…
the front door slammed shut.
Someone else had entered the house.
May you like
Someone who had been listening.
Someone who didn’t want us to find the truth.
