Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Dress

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The church remained frozen in a silence so heavy that I could hear the tiny sounds around me—the flicker of candles, the rustle of someone’s sleeve, the nervous breathing of guests who had come expecting a wedding and were now watching something they never imagined seeing.

My daughter stood in front of Claire with a trembling hand.

A six-year-old girl.

Holding a sewing needle.

And facing the woman who was supposed to become her stepmother.

“Lily,” I said slowly, forcing my voice to stay calm, “put the needle down.””

She looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

Not anger.

Not excitement.

Fear.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “if I put it down, nobody will believe me.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because I knew that look.

It was the same look she had the night her mother died.

The look of a child who had seen something terrible and was desperately trying to make an adult understand.

Claire stepped away again.

“Daniel, are you seriously allowing this?””

Her voice shook.

I looked at her.

The woman I was supposed to marry.

The woman carrying what I believed was our child.

“I don’t know what’s happening,” I admitted.

The guests started whispering again.

Claire’s face tightened.

“You don’t know?””

She pointed toward Lily.

“Your daughter is accusing me of faking my pregnancy, humiliating me in front of everyone, and now she’s threatening me with a needle.””

“She’s not threatening you,” I said.

Claire stared at me.

“Then what is she doing?””

I had no answer.

Because deep down, I knew something was wrong.

Lily wasn’t acting like a child trying to cause trouble.

She looked like someone trying to survive.

A woman near the front row stood up.

“Daniel,” she said softly, “maybe you should take your daughter outside.””

It was my older sister, Rachel.

She had always been protective of Lily.

But even she looked uncertain.

I nodded.

“Lily, come here.””

My daughter didn’t move.

Instead, she looked at Claire.

“I’m sorry.””

Claire blinked.

“What?””

“I’m sorry I have to do this.””

A strange expression crossed Claire’s face.

“What do you mean?””

Lily swallowed.

“Because I know you’re scared.””

The room went quiet again.

Claire’s lips parted.

Then she laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“Scared? Of you?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Claire’s stomach.

“Scared of everyone finding out.””

Claire’s smile disappeared.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Lily,” I said carefully, “tell me exactly what you saw.””

My daughter looked at me.

And this time, she answered.

“Last night, I couldn’t sleep.””

Her voice was small.

“I wanted to ask Claire if she could help me with my math homework because Mom used to help me.””

The mention of her mother made my chest ache.

Lily continued.

“But when I walked past her room, I heard her talking on the phone.””

Claire immediately interrupted.

“That’s not true.””

“Let her finish,” I said.

Claire looked shocked that I had said it.

Lily continued.

“She said, ‘Everything will be perfect after tomorrow. Once Daniel signs everything, nobody can stop us.’”

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Claire’s eyes widened.

“She’s twisting words.””

Lily shook her head.

“I heard more.””

She looked down.

“She said she couldn’t keep wearing it much longer because it was getting uncomfortable.””

The room became colder.

“Wearing what?”” I asked.

Lily pointed.

“The baby.””

A wave of whispers moved through the church.

Claire’s face turned pale.

“That’s insane.””

But Lily wasn’t finished.

“She opened her closet.””

Her fingers tightened around the needle.

“And I saw it.””

I stared at her.

“Saw what?””

“A fake stomach.””

Nobody spoke.

Then suddenly Claire walked toward me.

“Daniel, this is enough.””

Her voice was sharper now.

“She has been listening to adult conversations she doesn’t understand and creating a fantasy.””

“Then why are you afraid?”” Lily asked.

Claire stopped.

The question came from such a small voice.

But it landed like a weapon.

“I’m not afraid.””

“Yes, you are.””

“No, I’m not.””

“Yes.””

Lily pointed toward Claire’s dress.

“Because you know what’s under there.””

Claire’s face changed.

For the first time, I saw genuine panic.

She quickly covered it.

“Daniel, you need to make a choice.””

The words surprised me.

“A choice?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Lily.

“Between believing your daughter’s wild accusations…”

Then she looked at me.

“…or believing the woman who has stood beside you for two years.””

That hurt.

Because it wasn’t just about the wedding anymore.

It was about trust.

About everything I thought I knew.

I looked at Claire.

“Why won’t you let her prove she’s wrong?””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“If Lily is lying…”

I glanced at the needle.

“Then this ends in five seconds.””

Claire stepped back.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

Even Claire realized it.

Her face changed.

“I mean…”

She searched for words.

“I mean this is ridiculous. I’m not going to let a child destroy my wedding dress.””

Lily looked at me.

“Daddy.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Please.””

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had taught Lily one thing.

Never accuse someone without proof.

But I had also taught her another.

If something feels wrong, don’t stay silent.

And now those two lessons were fighting inside me.

I slowly walked toward my daughter.

“Give me the needle.””

Her face fell.

For a moment, I thought she believed I didn’t trust her.

Then I held out my hand.

“Not because I don’t believe you.””

She looked up.

“Because you shouldn’t have to do this alone.””

She placed the needle in my palm.

The church gasped.

Claire stared at me.

“Daniel…”

I didn’t answer.

I turned to her.

“Lift your dress slightly.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

The single word echoed.

I looked around.

Everyone had heard it.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Claire, if there’s nothing wrong, why refuse?””

Claire’s breathing became uneven.

“This is humiliating.””

“Yes,” I said quietly.

“It is.””

Her expression changed.

Because she realized something.

The room was no longer on her side.

The guests who had arrived to celebrate her wedding were now watching her.

Waiting.

I moved closer.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

For a moment, I saw the woman I thought I loved.

The woman who held me when I cried.

The woman who promised she would love my daughter like her own.

Then I saw something else.

A calculation.

A decision.

She looked around the room.

Then suddenly, her eyes landed on Lily.

And her expression became cold.

“You did this.””

My daughter froze.

“You made him doubt me.””

“Claire,” I warned.

“No.””

Her voice rose.

“She has hated me from the beginning.””

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t hate you.””

“Then why are you ruining my life?””

“I’m saving Daddy.””

The words broke something inside the room.

Claire stared at her.

Then she whispered:

“You really have no idea what you’re doing, do you?””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached down slowly.

Everyone watched.

Her hands touched the side of her wedding gown.

Then she pulled away.

A tiny sound escaped her.

A gasp.

Because something inside the dress had shifted.

Not naturally.

Not like a baby moving.

Like something hard had moved underneath the fabric.

Claire froze.

Lily saw it.

And her face changed.

She whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked at the shape beneath Claire’s gown.

My heart stopped.

Because Lily was right.

There was something hidden there.

Something that wasn’t supposed to be there.

Claire noticed everyone staring.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She grabbed the edge of her dress and ran.

Straight toward the church doors.

“Stop her!”” someone shouted.

I moved instantly.

But before I reached the door, Claire dropped something from her hand.

A small object fell onto the floor.

A tiny plastic card.

I picked it up.

And when I read the name printed on it…

I felt the entire world tilt.

Because it wasn’t Claire’s name.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who should never have been connected to my wedding.

Someone who had been dead for three years.

My daughter looked at the card.

Then looked at me.

“Daddy…”

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“Why does Claire have Mommy’s hospital ID?””
