Chapter 7: The Night Someone Came for Lily
Daniel stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Ask Claire what happened the night Michael came to take Lily.*
The room felt smaller.
The walls.
The ceiling.
The air itself.
Everything seemed to close in around them.
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
He looked at Claire.
Not with anger this time.
With something worse.
Disappointment.
“You knew.””
Claire’s eyes moved to the floor.
“Daniel…”
“You knew someone came for my daughter.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“You keep saying that.””
His voice rose.
“But every time you say it, I find out you were hiding something.””
Claire flinched.
Lily held onto Daniel’s sleeve.
She was trying not to cry.
Trying to be brave.
Just like the rabbit in the old book.
Emily noticed.
She walked closer.
“Lily.””
The little girl looked at her.
“I’m sorry you had to hear all of this.””
Lily looked confused.
“Why did everyone lie?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer that would make it better.
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
That was the question that mattered.
Not who was right.
Not who was wrong.
Why had everyone decided a child couldn’t handle the truth?
He opened his eyes.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
“Tell me about Michael.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“My brother was sick.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he wasn’t someone who could accept losing.””
“Losing what?””
Claire looked at Lily.
And the silence that followed was terrifying.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Answer me.””
Claire swallowed.
“His wife died when Lily was born.””
Emily’s face changed.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Emily looked away.
Claire continued.
“Michael and his wife were at the same hospital that night.””
Dr. Hayes nodded slowly.
“It was a terrible coincidence.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What happened?””
The doctor sighed.
“Michael’s wife gave birth prematurely. There were complications.””
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“She didn’t survive.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then back at Claire.
“And?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“And Michael broke.””
The room went silent.
“He became convinced that the hospital had taken something from him.””
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“His grief turned into obsession.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And somehow my daughter became part of that?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
“I knew Claire had a brother. I knew he was struggling. I didn’t know he believed Lily was connected to his wife.””
Daniel turned back to Claire.
“What happened that night?””
Claire didn’t answer.
The hesitation was enough.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The night he came for Lily.””
Claire sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“I found him outside the house.””
The memory seemed to pull her backward.
“Six months after Lily was born.””
Daniel frowned.
“Six months?””
Claire nodded.
“He had been watching.””
A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
“Watching?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Lily.
“He knew where you lived.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked at her.
“Because you were already breaking.””
Emily stared.
“What?””
“You weren’t sleeping. You were scared all the time. You were convinced someone was following you.””
Emily’s face changed.
“Because someone was.””
Claire looked away.
Daniel noticed.
The two women were trapped inside a history he had never known existed.
“Continue.””
Claire took a breath.
“That night, I came to your house.””
Daniel frowned.
“You came here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew Michael was coming.””
Emily looked shocked.
“How?””
Claire’s eyes moved to her.
“He told me.””
The room froze.
Daniel stared.
“Your brother told you he was coming for my daughter?””
Claire nodded.
“He thought I would help him.””
“Why would he think that?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Claire whispered:
“Because he thought I hated you.””
The words hung there.
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
“What?””
Claire looked at him.
“Michael knew I loved you.””
Nobody spoke.
“And he knew you were with Emily.””
Daniel stared.
“You told him about me?””
“I told him about my feelings.””
“When?””
“Before you and I were together.””
Emily looked at Claire.
“You were talking to your brother about my marriage?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“I was lonely.””
Emily shook her head.
“That’s not an excuse.””
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“It isn’t.””
For the first time, she sounded like she wasn’t defending herself.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel looked at her.
“More than mistakes.””
Claire accepted it.
“Yes.””
Then she continued.
“When Michael came that night, he believed Lily was supposed to be his.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She was six months old.””
“I know.””
“He was going to take her?””
Claire looked down.
“Yes.””
The word was almost silent.
Lily moved closer to Daniel.
He placed his arm around her.
“What happened?””
Claire’s eyes closed.
“I stopped him.””
Daniel stared.
“How?””
Claire looked toward the door.
“He was inside the house.””
The room went cold.
“He got inside?””
“Yes.””
Emily looked horrified.
“Daniel, I never knew.””
Claire nodded.
“You were asleep upstairs.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“She was in her crib.””
“Yes.””
A painful silence.
“I found Michael standing over her.””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“He was holding her?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“He was talking to her.””
Daniel frowned.
“Talking?””
Claire nodded.
“He was telling her that her real father had come.””
Emily looked sick.
Dr. Hayes lowered his eyes.
Daniel felt anger rising.
“What did you do?””
Claire whispered:
“I called the police.””
Daniel stared.
“You called?””
“Yes.””
“But you said you protected her.””
“I did.””
“You didn’t tell anyone.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because Michael threatened you.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“He said if I told anyone, he would tell you everything.””
“What everything?””
Claire looked at Emily.
Then at Daniel.
“That Lily wasn’t biologically yours.””
Daniel felt the pain of that sentence all over again.
“But you still didn’t tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of losing me?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked away.
That answer hurt more than he expected.
Because it was human.
But it didn’t erase what she had done.
Emily quietly spoke.
“Claire.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You could have told me.””
Claire looked at her.
“I know.””
“You could have told Daniel.””
“I know.””
“You could have helped instead of controlling everything.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A detail that didn’t fit.
He looked at Dr. Hayes.
“You said Michael was released six months ago.””
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“And you knew?””
Claire hesitated.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You knew he was free.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me.””
Claire whispered:
“I was trying to handle it.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“By yourself?””
“Yes.””
“Like everything else.””
Claire looked down.
The truth hurt because it was true.
Emily stepped closer.
“Where is Michael now?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Where is he?””
Claire’s face changed.
Fear returned.
“He’s nearby.””
“How nearby?””
Claire looked toward the windows.
Then at the phone.
“He’s been watching.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around Lily.
“How long?””
Claire whispered:
“Since before Emily came back.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A car door closing outside.
Everyone froze.
The house became silent.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming toward the front door.
Lily grabbed Daniel’s hand.
Emily moved instinctively toward her daughter.
Claire stood.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that him?””
Claire didn’t answer.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Then came a knock.
Three slow knocks.
The same rhythm as before.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Emily grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Because Michael never knocks.””
Everyone went still.
Then the voice outside spoke.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Claire.””
Nobody moved.
“I know you’re in there.””
Claire backed away.
The voice continued.
“And I know Lily is too.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
The man outside laughed softly.
“After all these years…”
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“I think it’s time I meet my daughter.””
