Chapter 6: The Secret Buried at Birth
The doctor’s voice changed the entire room.
Not because it was loud.
Because everyone knew it carried something that had been hidden for years.
Daniel stood frozen near the center of the living room.
He looked at the man holding the folder.
Then at Emily.
Then at Claire.
Nobody seemed surprised except him.
And that was the part that hurt the most.
Everyone had been carrying pieces of the truth.
Everyone except him.
“Dr. Hayes?””
The doctor nodded slowly.
“Daniel.””
Daniel recognized him now.
Not from recent memories.
From a lifetime ago.
The hospital.
The night Lily was born.
The night he held his daughter for the first time.
The night he cried because he thought nothing in the world could ever make him happier.
“What are you doing here?””
Dr. Hayes looked uncomfortable.
“I should have come sooner.””
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was sharp.
“You don’t get to do this.””
Dr. Hayes stared at her.
“I should have done it years ago.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Someone tell me what is happening.””
Nobody answered.
His patience snapped.
“Now.””
The command echoed through the room.
Even Lily looked startled.
Daniel immediately softened when he saw her face.
“I’m sorry.””
He crouched slightly beside her.
“But I need the truth.””
Lily nodded.
“I do too.””
That sentence broke something inside him.
Because she shouldn’t have needed to ask for the truth.
She was six years old.
She should have been worried about school projects and cartoons.
Not secrets.
Dr. Hayes placed the folder on the table.
“I was the doctor who delivered Lily.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“You remember that night?””
“Every second.””
The doctor looked down.
“Then you remember there was a complication.””
Daniel frowned.
“Emily had a difficult delivery.””
“Yes.””
Emily looked at the floor.
Daniel noticed.
“What complication?””
Dr. Hayes took a breath.
“One that changed everything.””
Claire’s voice interrupted.
“Don’t.””
Daniel turned.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
Her eyes were pleading.
Not angry.
Pleading.
For the first time, Daniel realized something.
Claire wasn’t afraid of Emily.
She was afraid of what Dr. Hayes was about to say.
“Let him talk,” Daniel said.
Claire slowly sat down.
Dr. Hayes opened the folder.
Inside were medical records.
Old documents.
Forms.
Notes.
He pulled out one page.
“After Lily was born, there was a question regarding her records.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What question?””
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
“Her identity.””
The room became silent.
Daniel stared.
“I don’t understand.””
Emily closed her eyes.
She looked like she had been waiting years for this moment.
Dr. Hayes continued.
“There was a mistake.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What kind of mistake?””
The doctor looked at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“A mistake that should have been discovered immediately.””
Daniel’s heart started racing.
“What are you saying?””
Emily whispered:
“Daniel…”
He turned toward her.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
She looked down.
The question hurt because she had no answer.
Dr. Hayes spoke.
“Lily’s birth records were altered.””
Daniel stared.
“Altered by who?””
Nobody moved.
Then his eyes slowly shifted toward Claire.
Claire looked away.
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
Dr. Hayes said nothing.
“No.””
The word came out louder.
“You’re saying Claire changed my daughter’s records?””
Claire stood.
“That is not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
“I was trying to fix something.””
Daniel laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Fix?””
Claire’s voice shook.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
Claire looked at Lily.
That was when Daniel knew.
Whatever the truth was, it involved his daughter.
“Why?”” he asked.
Claire looked down.
“Because Lily wasn’t supposed to be yours.””
The sentence hit the room like glass breaking.
Lily grabbed Daniel’s hand.
He felt her fingers trembling.
“No,” Daniel said.
Quietly.
Firmly.
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He looked at Lily.
“She is my daughter.””
Emily immediately nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Then what does that mean?””
Dr. Hayes stepped forward.
“Daniel, biological questions are complicated.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“I’m not asking about questions.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m asking why someone hid something about my child.””
The doctor lowered his eyes.
Because he knew.
Because he had been part of it.
Emily wiped her face.
“I found out when Lily was two.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“I discovered there were missing files.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emily shook her head.
“Because I didn’t know how.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“You didn’t trust me?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
Emily shook her head.
“Of losing her.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
His daughter.
The little girl who had his favorite smile.
The little girl who still left socks in the living room.
The little girl who called him Daddy.
“Losing her?””
Emily nodded.
“Claire convinced me that if the truth came out, everything would fall apart.””
Daniel turned toward Claire.
“What truth?””
Claire was silent.
Dr. Hayes answered.
“Lily’s biological father was someone else.””
Daniel felt the room spin.
But before the shock could take over, Lily’s voice interrupted.
“Daddy?””
He immediately looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Am I still your daughter?””
The question destroyed him.
Daniel dropped to his knees.
“Lily.””
He held her hands.
“Listen to me.””
Her eyes were full of fear.
“I don’t care what any paper says.””
A tear slipped down his face.
“You are my daughter.””
“But what if I’m not?””
“You are.””
His voice was stronger.
“You are because I was there.””
He touched her hair.
“I held you the first night you came home.””
A shaky breath.
“I taught you how to ride a bike.””
“I made pancakes that were too burned because I didn’t know how to cook.””
A tiny smile appeared on Lily’s face.
“You still make them burned.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Exactly.””
He wiped her tears.
“And I will make burned pancakes forever because I’m your dad.””
Emily covered her mouth.
Even Claire looked away.
The moment passed.
But the questions remained.
Daniel stood.
“Who is her biological father?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Emily said:
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“That’s the truth.””
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“The records were changed before the final paperwork.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Why would you do that?””
Claire’s face hardened.
“I didn’t change who Lily was.””
“You changed her records.””
“Because I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
Claire looked at Emily.
“From the man who was supposed to be her father.””
Daniel followed her gaze.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
He looked at Claire.
“You don’t get to protect me.””
Then at Emily.
“You don’t get to hide things.””
Then at Dr. Hayes.
“And you don’t get to stand here with documents from six years ago and expect me not to ask.””
Everyone went quiet.
Daniel pointed toward the folder.
“Tell me everything.””
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
Then he pulled out another document.
“This is why Claire became involved.””
Daniel took it.
The page was old.
The ink faded.
But one name was clear.
A name Daniel had never seen before.
*Michael Whitmore.*
Daniel looked up.
“Whitmore?””
Claire’s face changed.
Emily whispered:
“Her brother.””
Daniel stared at Claire.
“You have a brother?””
Claire said nothing.
Dr. Hayes continued.
“Michael was connected to Lily’s birth.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“How?””
The doctor looked at Emily.
Then at Claire.
Then finally at Daniel.
“He was the reason Emily disappeared.””
The room went completely still.
Lily moved closer to her father.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What did your brother do?””
Claire closed her eyes.
And when she spoke, her voice was barely a whisper.
“He found out Lily wasn’t his daughter.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Toward the place where the house had kept its secrets.
“Michael believed Lily belonged to him.””
Emily’s face went pale.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“Yes.””
The doctor quietly added:
“And six months ago, Michael was released from prison.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Prison?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was no photo.

Only words.
*Ask Claire what happened the night Michael came to take Lily.*
