Chapter 5: The Truth Emily Never Told
Daniel read the message again.
Then again.
The words did not change.
*You finally found her. Now ask Emily why she really came back.*
The photo beneath it showed the living room.
His living room.
His family standing inside it.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone close enough to take the picture.
Someone who knew exactly when Emily walked through the door.
Daniel lowered the phone slowly.
“Who sent that?””
Nobody answered.
Emily’s face had lost all color.
Claire looked toward the windows.
The same way she had looked earlier.
Like she was listening for something.
Like she was waiting for someone else to arrive.
“Emily.””
Daniel’s voice was sharp.
She looked at him.
“What?””
“Do you know who sent this?””
A pause.
Too long.
Daniel noticed.
“Emily.””
She looked down.
“I have a guess.””
Claire let out a quiet laugh.
“A guess?””
Emily looked at her.
“Don’t.””
“You disappear for eight months, come back suddenly, and now someone is threatening us?””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Neither woman spoke.
He looked at Emily.
“Who?””
Emily’s fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.
“I don’t know his name.””
“His?””
She nodded.
“The person who helped me.””
Daniel frowned.
“Helped you?””
Emily closed her eyes.
She knew she had reached the point where there was no way back.
“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to.””
The words were directed at Lily.
At her daughter.
“I left because someone wanted me gone.””
Lily stared.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Claire.
And Claire looked away.
Daniel saw it.
“You two know something.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission made his stomach drop.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Emily walked toward the sofa but didn’t sit.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had carried a heavy secret for too long.
“After Lily was born, I started receiving messages.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What kind of messages?””
“Anonymous ones.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emily looked at him.
“Because I thought they were my fault.””
The sentence confused him.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“They said I was failing as a mother. They said you were tired of me. They said Lily deserved someone better.””
Daniel stared.
“Emily.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled.
“Looking back, I know how ridiculous it sounds.””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“You were alone.””
She nodded.
“I was.””
Claire suddenly spoke.
“She’s leaving out the part where she became obsessed.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Claire crossed her arms.
“Emily started seeing threats everywhere.””
Emily’s face hardened.
“Because there were threats.””
“You thought everyone was against you.””
“You knew someone was.””
Claire shook her head.
“This is exactly what I mean.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Enough.””
He pointed toward the table.
“All of you sit.””
Nobody moved.
“Now.””
Something in his voice made them listen.
They sat.
Lily sat beside Daniel.
Emily sat across from them.
Claire remained at the far end of the couch.
Like she wanted as much distance from Emily as possible.
Daniel placed the police report and the letter on the table.
“I want facts.””
He looked at Emily.
“Start with the night you disappeared.””
Emily took a breath.
“That night, I found out Claire had been lying to me.””
Claire’s expression changed.
Daniel looked at her.
“What lie?””
Emily answered.
“She told me she had spoken to you.””
Daniel frowned.
“About what?””
“About leaving me.””
Silence.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Did you?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
“I was trying to help.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Did you tell my wife I wanted to leave her?””
Claire looked away.
“I told her you were unhappy.””
“That wasn’t your decision.””
“No.””
Claire’s voice became louder.
“But someone had to tell her the truth.””
Daniel stood.
“The truth?””
His voice echoed.
“You had known me for how long?””
Claire said nothing.
“And you thought you knew my marriage better than my own wife?””
Claire’s face tightened.
“I saw what you refused to see.””
Emily looked at her.
“You wanted me to leave.””
Claire turned.
“I wanted you to stop hurting him.””
Emily laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You didn’t care about him.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“No.””
Emily leaned forward.
“But I know what you told me.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“What did she tell you?””
Emily hesitated.
Then:
“She told me she loved you.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at Claire.
Claire didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
“She told me you were unhappy,” Emily continued.
“She told me you stayed because of guilt.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Claire.””
“I never acted on it.””
Emily looked at her.
“You didn’t have to.””
Daniel felt something cold settle in his chest.
Eight months.
Eight months of believing he had lost his wife.
Eight months of trusting the person who stood closest to him.
“Why?”” he whispered.
Claire looked at him.
“Because I saw what you needed.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“You needed someone strong.””
“No.””
“You needed someone who understood you.””
“No.””
His voice became harder.
“I needed the truth.””
Claire looked down.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily asked:
“Mom?””
Everyone turned.
Emily immediately softened.
“Yes?””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The question hurt more than anything else.
Emily’s eyes filled.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t I see you?””
Emily looked at Daniel.
Because that was the answer.
Daniel understood before she said it.
“Claire.””
Claire’s expression changed.
Emily nodded.
“She made sure I couldn’t.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
Emily reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a small stack of envelopes.
“I sent letters.””
Daniel stared.
“To Lily?””
Emily nodded.
“Birthday cards. Christmas cards. Little notes.””
She placed them on the table.
“I sent them here.””
Daniel looked at the envelopes.
All addressed to Lily.
All unopened.
His hands shook.
“How?””
Emily looked at Claire.
“Because they never reached her.””
Claire stood suddenly.
“Enough.””
The room froze.
Her voice was different.
No calm.
No control.
Just anger.
“You don’t get to come back after abandoning everyone and rewrite everything.””
Emily stood too.
“I didn’t abandon my daughter.””
“You left.””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Emily stared at her.
“Of you.””
Claire went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
Claire’s breathing became uneven.
“I was trying to protect him.””
Daniel almost whispered:
“From what?””
Claire looked at Emily.
Then at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
And something in her expression broke.
“She knows.””
Emily froze.
Daniel frowned.
“Who knows what?””
Claire pointed toward Emily.
“She knows what happened before you met me.””
Emily’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Daniel saw it.
“What?””
Emily looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“What happened?””
She didn’t answer.
Claire laughed softly.
“You never told him.””
Daniel turned to Emily.
“Told me what?””
Emily looked down.
The silence was unbearable.
Then she whispered:
“The reason Claire came into our lives wasn’t random.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Emily’s voice shook.
“I knew Claire before she met you.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Claire smiled bitterly.
“Now you understand.””
Daniel looked between them.
His entire understanding of the past began collapsing.
Emily took a breath.
“Claire wasn’t a stranger.””
“Then who was she?””
Emily looked at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
“She was connected to the one thing I was trying to hide from you.””
Daniel felt his heartbeat quicken.
“What thing?””
Emily’s eyes moved to the window.
The same window where Lily had stood earlier.
The same room where the first lie began.
Then Emily said:
“Your daughter’s birth.””
Daniel stared.
“What does Claire have to do with Lily’s birth?””
Emily opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the front door unlocked.
Everyone turned.
Nobody had touched it.
Slowly, the door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Holding a folder.
Daniel immediately recognized him.
A doctor.
A doctor from the hospital where Lily was born.
The man looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on Claire.
“I told you this would happen eventually.””
Claire’s face went white.
The doctor lifted the folder.
“Daniel Carter.””
May you like
He looked at him.
“You deserve to know what really happened the night your daughter was born.””
