Chapter 8: The Picture That Was Cut Apart
I stared at the three words written on the paper.
*Ask Marcus why.*
The handwriting was not my mother’s.
That was the first thing I noticed.
My mother’s handwriting had always been soft. Rounded letters. Careful strokes.
This was different.
The writing was rushed.
Sharp.
Like whoever wrote it had been afraid they wouldn’t have enough time.
I looked at Marcus.
He was still standing near the window.
Not moving.
Not speaking.
Like he had already lost the ability to pretend.
"What is this?""
My voice broke the silence.
Marcus didn't answer.
"Marcus.""
His eyes finally moved to mine.
And I saw it.
Recognition.
He knew that note.
He knew exactly what it meant.
"You've seen this before.""
It wasn't a question.
His expression tightened.
"Nia...""
"No.""
I held up the paper.
"No more.""
My hands were shaking, but my voice wasn't.
"You don't get to say my name like everything is okay.""
Marcus looked hurt.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to understand what it felt like.
"I spent six years believing my mother died in an accident.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Then I found out it wasn't.""
I looked back at Marcus.
"I spent my whole life believing you were my father.""
A pause.
"You weren't.""
His face fell.
"And now I find out there was someone else in that picture?""
I held the photograph.
"Who was cut out?""
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"I know who it was.""
I turned toward her.
Marcus immediately said,
"Vanessa.""
She ignored him.
"It was Daniel.""
I froze.
"Daniel was in the picture?""
She nodded.
"The original photo had all four of you.""
Four.
Me.
My mother.
Marcus.
Daniel.
I looked down at the photograph.
My small childhood face stared back at me.
How many times had I looked at this picture?
How many times had I wondered why there was so much space between people who supposedly loved each other?
Someone had physically cut him away.
Like he had never existed.
"Who removed him?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I did.""
The answer hit harder than I expected.
Even though I had suspected it.
Even though I knew secrets were everywhere.
Hearing him admit it still hurt.
"You?""
Marcus nodded.
"I was angry.""
"Angry enough to erase my father?""
His voice softened.
"I was angry enough to erase my brother.""
The word hung in the air.
Brother.
Not stranger.
Not enemy.
Family.
"Why?""
Marcus looked at the photograph.
"Because after your mother died, Daniel disappeared.""
I frowned.
"He said he didn't.""
"He would say that.""
"But he was here.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Only after you found out.""
I thought about the coffee shop.
The fear in Daniel’s eyes.
The way he looked at me.
Like he had been waiting years.
"What happened between you two?""
Marcus sat down.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not successful.
Just tired.
"Daniel and I were different.""
I stayed silent.
"He was always the person everyone noticed. Smarter. More charming. More talented.""
His fingers tightened.
"People loved him.""
"And you hated him?""
"No.""
The answer came quietly.
"I loved him.""
That surprised me.
Marcus looked at the floor.
"That's what made everything worse.""
The room became still.
"I spent my whole life trying to be enough compared to him.""
He laughed sadly.
"Then I met your mother.""
I listened.
"She chose me.""
His eyes became distant.
"For the first time, I wasn't the second choice.""
My chest tightened.
"Then Daniel came back.""
Marcus nodded.
"He wanted to fix things.""
"What things?""
He didn't answer immediately.
"His mistakes.""
I waited.
"And your mother believed him.""
There was something in his voice.
Jealousy.
Pain.
Something ugly.
"You were jealous.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked me.
"I was.""
He didn't try to excuse it.
"I was jealous that she trusted him. I was jealous that she believed he could change.""
"And then she died.""
Marcus looked away.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"Did you blame Daniel?""
"At first.""
"And now?""
He was quiet.
"Now I don't know.""
That was the most honest thing he had said.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why did you marry him?""
She stiffened.
I had wondered for years.
Why Vanessa?
Why did she enter our lives so quickly after my mother's death?
She looked uncomfortable.
"Because I knew the truth.""
"What truth?""
She glanced at Marcus.
Then at me.
"I knew Marcus wasn't telling the whole story.""
Marcus stood.
"Vanessa.""
But she continued.
"I knew Daniel was alive.""
My eyes widened.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"Before today?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Her expression changed.
"Because I was afraid.""
Everyone had that answer.
Afraid.
Protecting.
Trying to help.
Different words.
Same result.
"I was afraid of what would happen if you knew.""
"What happened?""
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"Your mother left something behind.""
My heart raced.
"The file?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Then what?""
"A recording.""
The room went quiet.
"What recording?""
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
He looked like he wanted to stop her.
But he didn't.
"Your mother recorded a conversation the night she died.""
My stomach dropped.
"With who?""
Vanessa whispered,
"Marcus.""
I stared at him.
"No.""
Marcus immediately shook his head.
"Listen to me.""
"Why?""
I backed away.
"Why is every secret connected to you?""
His face fell.
"I didn't hurt her.""
"Then what was on the recording?""
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
"Where is it?""
Vanessa spoke.
"Hidden.""
"Where?""
She looked at me.
"Somewhere your mother knew nobody would search.""
I thought about the letter.
The memory box.
The place that was mine.
"Where is my mother’s stuff?""
Marcus looked confused.
"What?""
"My memory box.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa looked at Marcus.
And something passed between them.
They knew.
They both knew.
"You said it was lost.""
Marcus didn't speak.
My heart started pounding.
"Where is it?""
Finally, Marcus whispered,
"Your mother's old house.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Before she died, she kept things there.""
"You told me she sold it.""
His face changed.
"I lied.""
Another lie.
Another piece of my life rewritten.
I laughed quietly.
I couldn't help it.
"Of course.""
I grabbed my jacket.
"Nia.""
I ignored him.
"I’m going there.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"No.""
I turned.
"Why?""
"Because someone has been looking for that recording.""
My hand stopped on the door.
"Who?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"The person who cut Daniel out of the picture.""
I turned.
"What does that mean?""
She looked terrified.
"It means whoever has been hiding the truth all these years knows you found it.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"You think someone will hurt me?""
Nobody answered.
The answer was obvious.
I walked out anyway.
Because I was done waiting for adults to decide how much truth I could handle.
The old Carter house sat on the edge of town.
Empty.
Forgotten.
The kind of place people passed without noticing.
Just like me.
I stood outside for several minutes.
Then I unlocked the door with the spare key Marcus kept hidden.
The smell hit me immediately.
Dust.
Wood.
Old memories.
My mother's perfume.
I almost cried.
Because somehow, this abandoned house felt more like home than the one I lived in.
I searched every room.
The kitchen.
The bedroom.
The closet.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
My mother used to tell me:
"The best hiding places are the ones everyone ignores.""
I walked into my old room.
The room I had slept in before everything changed.
My childhood drawings were still on the wall.
A small wooden box sat inside the closet.
My breath stopped.
The memory box.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
A bracelet.
A tiny stuffed animal.
And a small recorder.
My hands trembled.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then my mother's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
"Nia, if you are hearing this, something happened to me.""
I covered my mouth.
Her voice continued.
"I need you to know that I never stopped fighting for you.""
A man's voice appeared in the background.
My heart stopped.
Marcus.
"You can't do this.""
My mother's voice became angry.
"I have proof, Marcus.""
Proof.
The recording crackled.
Then my mother's next words froze me.
"You weren't trying to protect Nia.""
A pause.
"You were trying to take her from him.""
I stopped breathing.
Then Marcus said something.
Something I never expected.
Something that changed everything.
"I did what I had to do because Daniel is not Nia's father.""
The recording cut out.
I stared at the device.
My hands went numb.
Then the front door downstairs slammed shut.
Someone was inside.
A voice echoed through the empty house.
"Nia?""
I froze.
Because I recognized the voice.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was someone I had trusted my entire life.
Someone who had been watching me from the beginning.
May you like
Then the voice said,
"You weren't supposed to find that.""
