Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Past
Vanessa’s face told me everything before she said a single word.
For years, I had watched her control every room she entered. She could silence a conversation with a glance. She could turn a smile into a warning. She could make Marcus apologize to me for things I didn’t do.
But now she was standing at the end of the hallway, staring at a piece of paper in my hands like it was a weapon pointed directly at her.
And for the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
"Where did you get that?""
Her voice was different.
Not cold.
Not angry.
Afraid.
I tightened my grip around the document.
"I found it behind the picture frame.""
She took one slow step forward.
"Nia, give that to me.""
Something inside me told me not to move.
Not this time.
"No.""
The word surprised both of us.
Vanessa stopped.
Her eyes narrowed.
"What did you say?""
I looked down at the paper again.
The sentence was still there.
The biological father of Nia Carter is not Marcus Carter.
My entire life had been built around one person.
Marcus Carter.
The man whose last name I carried.
The man everyone called my father.
But the paper said he wasn’t.
"I said no.""
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
"You don't understand what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
Silence.
The hallway suddenly felt too small.
The air smelled like the lavender candles Vanessa always burned throughout the house. The same candles guests always complimented.
Everything about this house was designed to feel peaceful.
Except the truth.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Give me the paper, Nia.""
"Who is my real father?""
Her lips parted slightly.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
She knew.
"You’re twelve years old," she said quietly.
"You don't need to involve yourself in adult matters.""
"My father isn't my father.""
The words sounded strange when I said them.
Like I was talking about someone else’s life.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
"Marcus raised you.""
"That’s not what I asked.""
She looked away.
That was the first time Vanessa had ever avoided my eyes.
And somehow, that hurt more than if she had yelled.
"Your mother made mistakes," Vanessa finally said.
My stomach twisted.
"Don't talk about her like that.""
Her eyes snapped back to mine.
"Like what? Like someone who made poor choices?""
"My mother loved me.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
A cruel, quiet sound.
"Love doesn't change facts.""
I stepped back.
"Who is he?""
Before she could answer, the front door opened downstairs.
Marcus.
I knew his footsteps.
I had known them my whole life.
Vanessa heard them too.
Her entire body changed.
The fear disappeared.
The mask returned.
By the time Marcus reached the hallway, she was calm again.
"What’s going on?""
His eyes moved between us.
Then landed on the paper in my hand.
His face went pale.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Pale.
That was when I knew.
He knew.
"You knew," I whispered.
Marcus looked at me.
"Nia—"
"You knew.""
His silence was an answer.
I felt something break inside my chest.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a small, painful crack.
Because somehow, the truth hurt more coming from him.
"You knew my whole life?""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Listen to me.""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"No, you listen to me.""
I had never spoken to him that way before.
"I thought you were the only person who saw me.""
Marcus looked wounded.
And for a moment, I hated myself for noticing.
Because part of me still loved him.
That was the worst part.
I still wanted him to tell me there was an explanation.
I still wanted him to say the paper was wrong.
I still wanted him to be my dad.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he whispered,
"I wanted to protect you.""
I stared at him.
"Protect me from what?""
Neither he nor Vanessa answered.
That silence was louder than any confession.
"Who is he?"" I asked again.
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
She shook her head slightly.
A warning.
A secret conversation between them.
And I saw it.
They were still choosing each other.
Even now.
Even after I found out my entire identity was a lie.
Marcus finally spoke.
"His name was Daniel.""
The name landed between us.
Daniel.
I repeated it silently.
A stranger’s name.
My father’s name.
"Where is he?""
Marcus looked down.
"He’s gone.""
"Gone where?""
His hesitation made my heart race.
"Dead?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped in.
"Enough.""
I looked at her.
"No.""
She looked shocked.
I almost smiled.
I had never said no to Vanessa.
Not seriously.
Not like this.
"I want the truth.""
"You want the truth?"" she asked.
Her voice became sharper.
"Fine. The truth is messy. The truth ruins things. The truth destroys families.""
I looked around the hallway.
At the expensive paintings.
The perfect furniture.
The carefully arranged photographs.
"This isn't a family.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus looked hurt.
But neither argued.
Because maybe they knew.
Maybe they had known for years.
Vanessa reached for the paper.
"Give it to me.""
I stepped back.
"No.""
"Nia.""
"No.""
Her expression turned cold again.
"There are things you don't understand.""
"Then tell me.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that was when I realized something.
Vanessa wasn’t hiding the truth because it was complicated.
She was hiding it because it was dangerous.
I ran.
Not out of the house.
Not yet.
I ran to my room.
I locked the door for the first time in my life.
A few minutes later, Marcus knocked.
"Nia.""
I sat on the floor beside my bed, holding the document against my chest.
"Go away.""
"Please open the door.""
I laughed quietly.
A sad, empty laugh.
"Why?""
Silence.
"Because I love you.""
My eyes filled with tears.
Those words would have fixed everything yesterday.
Yesterday, I would have opened the door.
Yesterday, I would have believed him.
But today was different.
"Then why did you lie?""
There was a long pause.
Finally, he answered.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
His voice became softer.
"Of losing you.""
I wiped my face.
"You lost me when you stopped telling me the truth.""
He didn't answer.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then his footsteps slowly moved away.
I waited.
When I was sure he was gone, I opened the document again.
The paternity test had more information beneath the first page.
Names.
Dates.
Signatures.
And at the bottom was something I hadn’t noticed before.
A handwritten note.
Not typed.
Not official.
Written by my mother.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The handwriting was familiar.
Even after six years, I recognized it.
My mother’s handwriting.
Nia, if you are reading this, it means someone finally decided you were old enough to know the truth.
I stopped.
My breath caught.
I kept reading.
I wanted to tell you everything myself, but I was afraid.
The room became blurry.
Your father is not the man everyone thinks he is. But that does not mean he does not love you.
I swallowed.
Then I read the next line.
And my entire body went cold.
The reason Marcus raised you was because he promised me he would protect you from Daniel Carter.
I stared at the name.
Daniel Carter.
The same last name as Marcus.
That made no sense.
Unless...
I kept reading.
Daniel was not just a stranger. He was Marcus’s brother.
I dropped the paper.
The room spun.
Marcus wasn’t just a man who raised me.
He was my uncle.
My entire family tree had been rewritten in one night.
But there was more.
At the bottom of the letter, my mother had written one final sentence.
The day Nia learns the truth is the day she must find out why Daniel disappeared.
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because everyone had told me my biological father was gone.
But nobody had explained one thing.
Why.
A soft sound came from outside my bedroom door.
I froze.
Someone was standing there.
I slowly looked toward the handle.
It moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then Vanessa’s voice whispered through the door.
"Nia, open this door.""
I didn't answer.
Her voice became quieter.
Almost gentle.
"Because if you read the rest of that letter, you will find out what happened to your mother.""
My blood ran cold.
The handle moved again.
May you like
And then Vanessa said the words that made me stop breathing.
"Your mother didn't die in an accident.""
