Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

My fingers went cold around my phone.

*Nia, if you want the truth about your mother, meet me tomorrow. Come alone.*

Below it was the name.

*Daniel Carter.*

The name that had haunted every secret conversation.

The name that had been buried for six years.

The name of the man everyone told me was gone.

I looked up.

Marcus was still staring at my phone.

Not with anger.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

Real fear.

"How did he get your number?"" Marcus whispered.

I looked at him.

"You tell me.""

His face tightened.

"Nia, you cannot meet him.""

The speed of his answer made my stomach twist.

"Why?""

"Because it's not safe.""

"Not safe because he's dangerous?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

"Everyone keeps telling me people are dangerous.""

I held up the phone.

"But nobody tells me why.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Nia, listen to me.""

I turned toward her.

"No.""

The word came out faster than I expected.

She stopped.

"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""

Something flashed across her face.

Pain.

Maybe guilt.

Maybe anger.

I didn't care anymore.

For years, Vanessa had controlled every part of my life.

What I ate.

Where I slept.

How I dressed.

How loudly I spoke.

Now there was one thing she couldn't control.

The truth.

"I’m meeting him.""

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I said so.""

The old me would have obeyed.

The old me would have looked down.

The old me would have apologized.

But I wasn't that girl anymore.

"That's not an answer.""

Marcus stared at me.

I could see him searching for the right words.

For years, he had always known what to say.

Not this time.

"Daniel is not the person you think he is.""

I looked at the photograph on the table.

The man beside my mother.

The man with my eyes.

"You don't even know what I think he is.""

Marcus looked away.

And that told me something.

He wasn't just afraid of Daniel.

He was afraid of what Daniel would tell me.

I picked up the photograph and the letter.

"I’m going to my room.""

"Nia.""

I stopped.

Marcus's voice softened.

"I raised you.""

I turned around.

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

He had.

He had packed my lunches.

He had held my hand at the hospital when I got stitches.

He had sat beside my bed when I had nightmares.

But he had also hidden the biggest truth about my life.

"I know.""

My voice shook.

"That's why this hurts so much.""

Then I walked away.

That night, I didn't sleep.

Again.

But this time, it wasn't because I was afraid.

It was because I was trying to understand.

Daniel Carter.

My biological father.

A man everyone had erased.

A man who somehow knew how to contact me.

A man who claimed to know the truth about my mother.

I opened the old letter again.

I studied every word.

My mother had written carefully.

Like she knew someone might find it.

Like she knew someone might try to hide it.

There was one sentence I kept returning to.

The truth will hurt, but lies hurt longer.

I wondered if she had written that for me.

Or for herself.

At seven the next morning, I left the house before anyone woke up.

I didn't leave a note.

I didn't explain.

For once, I wasn't asking permission.

The address Daniel sent was a small coffee shop downtown.

Not the kind of place Vanessa would ever visit.

No crystal glasses.

No expensive furniture.

Just wooden tables, old bookshelves, and the smell of coffee filling the air.

I stood outside for five minutes.

I almost walked away.

Then I saw him.

A man sitting near the window.

Older than the photograph.

Gray mixed into his dark hair.

A scar near his eyebrow.

He looked nothing like Marcus.

And yet...

I knew.

Somehow, I knew.

My feet moved before my mind could stop them.

He looked up.

And when he saw me, his entire expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something worse.

Regret.

"Nia.""

Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange.

Like a stranger had stolen a word that belonged to me.

I sat across from him.

"Are you Daniel Carter?""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"You're alive.""

His eyes dropped.

"Yes.""

"Why did everyone say you were dead?""

His jaw tightened.

"Because that was easier.""

"Easier for who?""

He didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

"For six years, I thought you were dead.""

His eyes became wet.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You don't know what it's like to wonder why someone left you.""

He looked like I had hit him.

Because maybe I had.

"I didn't leave you.""

"Then where were you?""

Silence.

The kind of silence adults use when they don't want children to understand.

I hated that silence.

"Tell me.""

Daniel looked out the window.

"Your mother found evidence that someone was using our family company to move money illegally.""

I listened carefully.

"She planned to expose it.""

"Who?""

His face hardened.

"Marcus.""

I froze.

"No.""

The answer came automatically.

Daniel looked back at me.

"That’s what you want to believe.""

"You’re lying.""

"Maybe.""

His honesty surprised me.

Then he continued.

"But ask yourself something, Nia.""

He leaned closer.

"Why would Marcus hide your paternity test?""

I didn't answer.

"Why would he let you believe he was your father?""

I looked down.

"Because he wanted to protect me.""

Daniel gave a sad smile.

"That's exactly what he would say.""

I hated how much sense it made.

I hated that every person in my life had a different version of the same story.

"Did you kill my mother?""

Daniel went completely still.

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

"I loved your mother.""

"Then why did she die?""

His fingers tightened around his coffee cup.

"Because she found out the truth.""

"What truth?""

He looked at me.

"The truth that Marcus wasn't protecting you.""

My heart started racing.

"What was he doing?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

He looked past me.

His expression changed.

Fear.

I turned around.

A man in a dark jacket stood near the entrance.

Watching us.

Daniel immediately stood.

"We have to go.""

I grabbed his arm.

"No. You don't get to disappear again.""

His eyes met mine.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

He looked at the man by the door.

Then back at me.

"Someone followed you here.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.

"Your mother wanted you to have this when you were ready.""

I stared at it.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?""

"Because I thought staying away would keep you alive.""

The words scared me.

"What does that mean?""

Before he could answer, the coffee shop door opened.

The man in the dark jacket started walking toward us.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

"Run.""

I pulled away.

"No.""

His eyes locked onto mine.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

A father’s fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

"Nia, if you stay here, you will never get the chance to learn what happened to your mother.""

The stranger was getting closer.

Daniel pushed the envelope into my hand.

"Don't trust Marcus.""

My heart stopped.

Then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.

"Because the person who killed your mother is still living in your house.""

The stranger reached the table.

Daniel shoved me toward the back exit.

"Go!""

I ran.

I didn't know where I was going.

I didn't know who to believe.

I only knew one thing.

Someone in my house had been lying to me for years.

And as I pushed open the back door of the coffee shop, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Marcus.

*Nia, I know where you are. Come home immediately.*

A second message appeared before I could breathe.

*You need to know what Daniel did before he tells you what I did.*

I stared at the screen.

Then at the envelope in my hand.

Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Maybe both of them were telling the truth.

And maybe the truth about my mother’s death was darker than either of them wanted me to know.
