Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Lies
The message stayed on my phone screen.
*Ask your father why he helped me bury the truth.*
I stared at those words until they blurred.
My father.
The man I had mourned.
The man whose funeral I had attended three years earlier.
The man whose old photographs sat in a box in my mother’s closet.
He was alive.
And Jason knew.
Which meant Jason had known for years.
My entire family had been living inside a lie.
The warehouse shook as the wind slammed against the walls.
Somewhere downstairs, something metal crashed.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Emma, we need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know?””
Her face collapsed.
“Know what?””
“That Dad was alive.””
Silence.
That silence was the answer.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.””
My mother started crying.
“I didn’t know where he was.””
“But you knew he wasn’t dead.””
She looked away.
That hurt more than any confession.
Because my mother had always been my safe place.
The person I ran to.
The person I believed would never lie to me.
And now every memory felt uncertain.
“Emma,” my father said quietly.
I turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
His expression changed.
“You deserve an explanation.””
“I deserved the truth three years ago.””
He lowered his head.
“Yes.””
That single word hurt.
No excuses.
No denial.
Just yes.
Rachel stepped between us.
“We don’t have time.””
She pointed toward the stairs.
“Jason is here.””
My father looked toward the door.
“He won’t leave until he gets what he wants.””
I stared at him.
“What does he want?””
My father looked at the blue file.
“The same thing he has wanted for six years.””
“The evidence.””
He nodded.
“Daniel’s evidence.””
I stepped closer.
“And you know where it is.””
My father looked at me.
“I know what happened.””
“That’s not an answer.””
His face tightened.
“Because the truth is worse than you think.””
A crash came from downstairs.
The sound of the front door breaking.
Jason was inside.
My father moved toward an old cabinet in the office.
“Listen to me carefully.””
I watched him pull out a small metal box hidden behind the cabinet.
“I spent years trying to keep this away from Jason.””
My mother whispered:
“Thomas…”
He looked at her.
“I should have told her.””
My mother looked down.
“Yes.””
He opened the box.
Inside was a small recorder.
A photograph.
And a letter.
He handed me the photograph first.
It showed Daniel.
Standing outside the warehouse.
But beside him was another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
Jason.
And my father.
All three of them.
Together.
“When was this taken?””
My father swallowed.
“The night Daniel died.””
My hands went cold.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Jason was there?””
“Yes.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Then tell us what happened.””
My father looked at the photograph.
“Daniel discovered Jason was stealing money from his business partners.””
I frowned.
“Business partners?””
“Jason was using fake investments. He convinced people to put money into companies that didn’t exist.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Daniel found proof.””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“And Jason knew Daniel had it.””
I held up the recorder.
“What is this?””
“Daniel’s final recording.””
The room became silent.
“Why didn’t you give this to the police?””
My father’s face broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
I stared.
“Of Jason?””
“No.””
He looked at my mother.
“I was afraid because someone else was involved.””
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt my heartbeat slow.
“Who?””
My father didn’t answer.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“Thomas, if you’re hearing this, I need you to understand something.””
My father looked away.
Daniel continued.
“Jason isn’t working alone.””
A pause.
“There is someone helping him.””
The recording crackled.
“Someone who has access to family information.””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Someone who knows how Lily thinks.””
A sound in the background.
Then:
“If anything happens to me, don’t trust—”
The recording cut.
That was it.
The same way Lily’s video had cut.
Like someone wanted the final words erased.
My father looked devastated.
“That night, I arrived too late.””
Rachel looked at him.
“What happened?””
“Daniel was already gone.””
“Dead?””
My father nodded.
“Jason was there.””
I swallowed.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because when I arrived, someone else was there too.””
I looked at my mother.
“Who?””
My father whispered:
“Martha.””
The world stopped.
My mother covered her mouth.
Rachel stared.
“No.””
I looked at my mother.
“Mom?””
She couldn’t meet my eyes.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
My mother cried.
“I didn’t hurt Daniel.””
“Then why were you there?””
She sat down.
Like her legs couldn’t hold her anymore.
“Because Lily called me.””
The words came out slowly.
“She knew Daniel was meeting Jason.””
I stared.
“She asked you to go?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because she was afraid.””
The room went quiet.
“She thought Jason was going to hurt him.””
I looked at my father.
“Then what happened?””
My father answered.
“I arrived after everything happened.””
My mother whispered:
“But I saw Jason.””
My heart pounded.
“You saw him?””
She nodded.
“He was standing over Daniel.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“Then Jason did kill him.””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“No?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because Daniel was still alive when I got there.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father’s voice cracked.
“He told me something.””
“What?””
“He said Jason didn’t push him.””
Silence.
“Then who did?””
My father looked at my mother.
My mother started crying harder.
And I knew.
Before he even said it.
“There was another person.””
My father’s voice was barely audible.
“Someone who came after Jason.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Jason’s voice came through.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Emma.””
My grip tightened.
“Where are you?””
He laughed quietly.
“You still think I’m the one you should be afraid of.””
I looked at my father.
“What did you do?””
A pause.
Then Jason said:
“I did exactly what Lily wanted me to do.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She needed everyone to believe I was the villain.””
My hands shook.
“Because you were.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“Because I was the only one trying to stop her.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Jason continued.
“Emma, ask your father why Lily recorded a conversation with your mother the night she died.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
My mother went pale.
Jason continued:
“She found out who changed the insurance policy.””
I looked at my mother.
“She found out who lied about Noah.””
My father closed his eyes.
“And she found out who caused Daniel’s death.””
The warehouse felt like it was closing in.
“Who?””
Jason whispered:
“Ask your mother.””
The call ended.
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
Not denying.
Not defending herself.
Just crying.
“Mom…”
She looked at me.
And whispered the words I had been dreading.
“I didn’t mean for Lily to die.””
Everything stopped.
Rachel gasped.
My father looked away.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What does that mean?””
My mother covered her face.
“I went to Lily’s house that night.””
“Why?””
“Because she called me.””
“About what?””
She looked at me.
And her answer shattered the last piece of my childhood.
“She wanted to confront me.””
I stepped back.
“Why?””
My mother’s voice broke.
“Because she knew I was the person helping Jason.””
The lights flickered.
The warehouse door suddenly slammed open downstairs.
Jason’s voice echoed through the building.
“You finally told her.””
My mother looked toward the stairs.
Jason stood there.
And this time, he wasn’t pretending.
No sadness.
No grief.
No mask.
Only the truth.
He looked at me.
“Now you know why Lily died.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Jason smiled sadly.
“Because your mother made one mistake.””
He stepped forward.
“She tried to save her.””
And then he said the one thing that made me realize Lily’s final secret was never about Jason.
It was about the person standing beside him.
“The person who pushed Lily wasn’t me.””
A pause.
May you like
Jason looked at Rachel.
“It was the person you trusted enough to bring here tonight.””
