Chapter 7: The Truth About Noah

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My brain kept rejecting it.

*Emma, I never told you who Noah’s real father was.*

The words sat on the page like a threat.

A confession.

A wound.

I looked at the birth certificate in my hands.

The paper was official.

Real.

Impossible.

Under the section marked *Father*, there was a name.

A name I knew.

A name that had been part of my life for years.

But not in the way I was seeing it now.

Not like this.

My hands began to shake.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Almost like a prayer.

Because if this was true, then everything changed.

Lily’s marriage.

Jason’s anger.

The secrets.

The fear.

The reason someone wanted her silent.

Everything.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned quickly.

My mother stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy weight for too long and finally ran out of strength.

“Emma.””

I held up the birth certificate.

“What is this?””

Her eyes moved to the paper.

Then she looked away.

That was the answer.

The silence was the answer.

“You knew.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew this whole time.””

My mother stepped inside.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She flinched.

“When Lily was ready.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Lily is dead, Mom.””

The words hit her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

“You keep saying everyone was trying to protect Lily.””

I held up the paper.

“But everyone kept secrets from her too.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

My voice rose.

“My sister died carrying a baby whose father wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She loved that baby.””

“I know.””

“She loved Noah more than anything.””

“Then why didn’t she tell Jason?””

My mother looked at me.

And whispered:

“Because she was afraid.””

The anger inside me paused.

“Afraid of what?””

My mother walked toward the table.

Slowly.

Like every step hurt.

“She found out the truth about Noah’s father before I did.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She came to me after she took a DNA test.””

My heart raced.

“Why would she take one?””

My mother sat down.

“Because Jason accused her.””

The room became silent.

“Accused her of what?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“He told her Noah might not be his.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Jason had been looking for a reason to leave.””

My hands tightened.

“But he stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother looked at the birth certificate.

“Because Jason wasn’t trying to leave.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He was trying to control her.””

My mother told me everything.

At least, everything she knew.

Three months before Lily died, Jason had started changing.

Not dramatically.

Not enough for outsiders to notice.

That was what made it dangerous.

He didn’t become a different person overnight.

He became a slightly colder version of the person everyone already knew.

He stopped asking Lily how she felt.

Stopped touching her stomach when Noah moved.

Stopped talking about the future.

Then came the accusations.

“You’re always hiding your phone.””

“You’re acting different.””

“Are you sure this baby is mine?””

My mother said Lily came to her house one night crying.

She had been holding a small envelope.

A DNA test.

“She was terrified,” my mother said.

“She kept saying, ‘Mom, I didn’t do anything wrong.’”

I swallowed.

“What did the test say?””

My mother looked down.

“It confirmed Jason was not Noah’s father.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“Then who was?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t need to.

I already knew.

The name on the certificate.

The name that had been hidden.

The name I had spent my whole life hearing.

I whispered it.

“Daniel.””

My mother nodded.

Daniel Carter.

Lily’s childhood friend.

My father’s younger brother.

My uncle.

I stepped away from the table.

“No.””

My mother started crying.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“Lily and Daniel were together before Jason.””

I stared at her.

“Before Jason?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she marry Jason?””

My mother looked devastated.

“Because Daniel died.””

The anger disappeared.

“What?””

“Daniel died in a car accident six years ago.””

I remembered.

Of course I remembered.

Everyone in Willow Creek remembered.

A young man with a future.

A tragedy.

A funeral.

A family broken apart.

But nobody ever told me Lily loved him.

My mother continued.

“Lily found out she was pregnant after Daniel died.””

I sat down slowly.

“She never told anyone?””

“She wanted to.””

My mother looked at the birth certificate.

“But Jason found out.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

My mother looked at me.

“That’s the part Lily was trying to prove.””

I found Lily’s journal again.

The pages near the end suddenly made more sense.

The words I had ignored.

The fear.

The confusion.

The questions.

I turned to a page dated one month before her death.

Jason knows about Daniel.

Another page.

He says nobody will believe me.

Another.

He says I stole his future.

I stopped.

Then I turned one more page.

The handwriting was rushed.

Messy.

Almost impossible to read.

Jason didn’t marry me because he loved me.

He married me because of Daniel.

My heart pounded.

I kept reading.

He knows Daniel left something behind.

Something Jason wants.

Something bigger than money.

I looked up.

“Something Daniel left behind.””

My mother nodded.

“Lily mentioned that.””

“What did she say?””

“That Daniel had evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

My mother looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed the journal.

“Then why did she say Jason wanted it?””

My mother shook her head.

“Because Jason believed Daniel had something.””

Something.

Not money.

Not inheritance.

Something else.

The pieces moved around in my mind.

The hotel photograph.

The life insurance.

Rachel’s warning.

Jason’s obsession with Lily’s secrets.

He wasn’t just hiding an affair.

He was searching for something.

But what?

That evening, Rachel came back.

This time, I didn’t accuse her.

I didn’t yell.

I just asked one question.

“Did you know about Daniel?””

Rachel went completely still.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

She sat down.

“Yes.””

My mother looked at her.

“How?””

Rachel sighed.

“Because Daniel was my brother.””

The room froze.

I stared.

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Daniel Carter was my older brother.””

Everything stopped making sense.

My head hurt.

“Then why were you helping Lily?””

“Because Lily was the only person who believed me.””

My mother frowned.

“Believed you about what?””

Rachel looked at the blue file.

“About Jason.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Daniel didn’t die in a normal accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“He was investigating Jason.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“Daniel discovered Jason was involved in something illegal.””

“What?””

“I don’t know all of it.””

She looked at me.

“But Daniel left behind proof.””

The room became silent.

“And Jason has spent years trying to find it.””

I looked at the journal.

The files.

The birth certificate.

Suddenly, I understood.

Lily wasn’t only protecting Noah.

She was protecting Daniel’s truth.

And Jason wasn’t afraid because Lily knew about Noah.

He was afraid because Lily knew what Daniel discovered.

Rachel reached into her bag.

“I found this after Lily died.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“It was hidden inside Daniel’s old belongings.””

I stared.

“Why give it to me?””

“Because Lily wanted you to have it.””

My fingers touched the envelope.

On the front, in handwriting I didn’t recognize, were three words.

*For Lily’s sister.*

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

Standing beside Jason.

But they weren’t friends.

They weren’t talking.

Daniel looked angry.

Jason looked frightened.

And behind them was a building I recognized.

The old Carter family warehouse.

A place abandoned for years.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

Three words.

*He knows everything.*

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

Because the sender had attached a picture.

A picture taken just seconds earlier.

Of Rachel.

My mother.

And me.

Standing in the kitchen.

The message underneath said:

*Now I know where Lily hid it.*

And then another message appeared.

*Come to the warehouse if you want to know why she died.*

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

Because she knew exactly what it meant.

The warehouse.

The place where Daniel died.

The place where Jason had been hiding something for six years.

And the place where Lily had been planning to go the night before she fell down the stairs.

May you like

Before she died.

Before she could reveal the truth.
