Chapter 5: The Man Everyone Believed
The sound of Jason’s voice froze the entire room.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
It was strange how a person could spend years feeling familiar, and then one sentence could make them feel like a stranger.
Jason Reed.
The man who had held Lily’s hand in every family photograph.
The man who had painted Noah’s nursery with her.
The man who had stood beside Lily’s casket and cried in front of an entire church.
He was standing in my house.
In the dark.
After searching for the evidence my sister left behind.
My mother stepped in front of me.
The same mother who had cried for days after losing Lily.
The same mother who had once told me Jason was the son she never had.
Now she stood between us with a baseball bat raised.
“Get out of my house.””
Jason sighed.
Not angrily.
Not nervously.
Like he was disappointed.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
The way he said her name made my skin crawl.
“You really want to do this?””
My mother’s grip tightened.
“You broke into my home.””
“I didn’t break in.””
A small pause.
“I used the back door.””
That was somehow worse.
He wasn’t denying it.
He wasn’t afraid.
He walked slowly down the stairs, his shoes making quiet sounds against the wooden steps.
The lights flickered once.
Then came back on.
And there he was.
Jason.
Still wearing the black suit from Lily’s funeral.
Still looking like the grieving husband everyone had comforted hours earlier.
Except now there were no tears.
No sadness.
No broken expression.
Just calm.
Cold calm.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to my mother.
Then to Rachel.
Then finally to me.
“You really made this difficult.””
I stared at him.
“You came into my house after my sister’s funeral.””
Jason tilted his head.
“I came here because I wanted to talk.””
“People who want to talk don’t sneak upstairs.””
His jaw tightened slightly.
A tiny reaction.
But I saw it.
Jason hated being challenged.
“Emma, you don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
I laughed.
The sound surprised even me.
“You’re right.””
I stepped forward.
“I don’t understand.””
My voice shook.
“So explain it.””
Jason looked at Rachel.
“You brought her here?””
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“I came because Lily trusted me.””
Jason smiled.
A small, cruel smile.
“Lily trusted everyone.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because Lily’s kindness had always been one of her greatest qualities.
And Jason used it like a weakness.
My mother looked disgusted.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like that.””
Jason turned toward her.
“I loved Lily.””
“No.””
My mother’s voice cracked.
“You loved controlling Lily.””
For the first time, Jason’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
His smile disappeared.
“You should be careful what you accuse people of.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Is that what you told Lily too?””
His eyes moved to me.
“What?””
“When she started asking questions.””
Silence.
A long, uncomfortable silence.
Then Jason said:
“You have no idea what happened between Lily and me.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re right.””
I held up my phone.
“But I know what she left behind.””
His face changed.
Just for a second.
“What did you find?””
There it was.
Not concern.
Not fear.
Interest.
He wanted to know.
I noticed.
Rachel noticed too.
She whispered:
“You’re proving her right.””
Jason looked at her.
“Stay out of this.””
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“You said that last time.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Neither answered.
“Someone better start explaining.””
Jason ran a hand over his face.
“You think this is simple.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I think you made it complicated.””
The room went quiet.
Then Jason said something I never expected.
“Lily was unstable near the end.””
My mother gasped.
“What?””
“She was scared. She was paranoid. She was pregnant and overwhelmed.””
I felt heat rise in my chest.
“You’re blaming her?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re telling us the version that protects you.””
Jason’s eyes hardened.
“You sound exactly like her.””
The words hit me.
Because they sounded like an insult.
Like thinking like Lily was something shameful.
“What happened to my sister?””
For the first time, Jason didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation told me more than words could.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Tell her.””
Jason looked at her.
“Don’t.””
“Tell her what you did.””
Jason’s face became unreadable.
“Rachel.””
“No more.””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“You don’t get to keep pretending.””
My mother looked at her.
“What did he do?””
Rachel swallowed.
“He used me.””
Jason laughed quietly.
“That’s dramatic.””
“You asked me to pretend we were having an affair.””
The room went still.
I stared at Jason.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“He wanted Lily to think I was someone from his past.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Lily would investigate.””
My mind raced.
“Wait.””
I looked at Jason.
“You wanted her to find Rachel?””
Jason said nothing.
Rachel answered.
“Yes.””
“Why would someone want their wife to think they were cheating?””
Rachel looked toward the stairs.
“Because cheating was easier to explain than the truth.””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
Jason suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the blue folder from the table.
My mother shouted.
“Hey!””
I lunged forward.
But Jason was already stepping back.
The calm expression was gone.
For the first time, he looked desperate.
“Give me that.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Emma.””
His voice became dangerous.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
“You keep saying that.””
I looked at the folder in his hand.
“But you never explain why.””
Jason opened the folder.
His eyes scanned the papers.
Then he stopped.
Something inside the folder had changed his expression.
“What?””
I watched him.
“What did you see?””
He ignored me.
Rachel looked terrified.
“What is it?””
Jason looked at her.
Then at me.
“You don’t have the whole file.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He turned the folder upside down.
Several pages fell out.
But something was missing.
The flash drive.
My blood ran cold.
Because I had it.
I had taken it upstairs.
Jason didn’t know that.
Or maybe he did.
His eyes moved to my laptop.
And I realized.
He had seen it.
The video.
“You watched it.””
It wasn’t a question.
I didn’t answer.
Jason stepped closer.
“What did Lily say?””
My mother moved between us again.
“Leave.””
Jason ignored her.
“Emma.””
His voice became softer.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
“You need to understand something.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Lily wasn’t killed because she found a secret.””
Rachel went pale.
“Jason.””
He continued.
“She was killed because she misunderstood one.””
The room went silent.
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Jason looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Ask Rachel who Lily was really investigating.””
I looked at Rachel.
She looked away.
That was enough.
Because I knew.
There was another secret.
Another person.
Another reason Lily had been afraid.
Jason slowly backed toward the door.
My mother shouted:
“You’re leaving?””
He looked at her.
“I’m giving Emma a chance.””
“A chance for what?””
Jason opened the door.
“To decide whether she wants the truth.””
The rain had started again outside.
Before leaving, he turned back.
And said:
“Because once you know who Lily was protecting…”
He looked directly at me.
“You’ll understand why she never told you.””
The door closed.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then I turned toward Rachel.
“Who was Lily protecting?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Rachel.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Find out what?””
She looked at my mother.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Lily wasn’t investigating Jason.””
A pause.
“She was investigating your family.””
The words hit like a punch.
“What?””
Rachel reached into her coat.
She pulled out a folded envelope.
One I recognized immediately.
Because it had Lily’s handwriting.
My name.
Emma.
Rachel placed it on the table.
“She wrote this the night before she died.””
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
But before I opened it, Rachel said one more thing.
Something that made my entire world tilt.
“Emma…”
Her voice broke.
“Your sister didn’t die trying to expose Jason.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did she die?””
May you like
Rachel whispered:
“Because she discovered who helped him.””
