Chapter 7: The Brother I Trusted

The recording stopped.

Just like that.

No warning.

No explanation.

No final goodbye.

Only silence.

But the last sentence remained.

Like a scream trapped inside my head.

*Your own brother is the reason I died.*

I stared at the laptop screen.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Praying that somehow the recording would continue.

That Sarah’s voice would come back and explain that I misunderstood.

That there was another meaning.

That there was another person.

Anyone else.

But the screen stayed frozen.

The room stayed quiet.

And everyone was watching me.

Especially Vanessa.

I slowly turned toward her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“You knew about my brother.””

“Daniel—”

“You knew.””

My voice broke.

Not from anger.

From betrayal.

Because my brother wasn’t just family.

He was the person who stood beside me when Sarah died.

The person who hugged me at the funeral.

The person who told me I had to stay strong for Emma.

My brother, Michael.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I didn’t know the whole story.””

“What did you know?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

I laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone knew something.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone except me.””

Mark spoke carefully.

“Daniel, you need to listen before you make assumptions.””

I turned toward him.

“Assumptions?””

I pointed at the laptop.

“My dead wife’s voice just told me my brother killed her.””

“We don’t know that.””

“Then what do we know?””

Mark didn’t answer.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did Sarah tell you?””

She wiped her tears.

“Not everything.””

“Stop saying that.””

My voice rose.

“I’m tired of half-truths.””

Emma was upstairs.

I immediately lowered my voice.

But the anger stayed.

“I need the whole story.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

For the first time since I met her, she looked completely broken.

“Sarah contacted me two weeks before the accident.””

I froze.

“She contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to apologize.””

“For what?””

Vanessa looked at the table.

“For not trusting me.””

The answer confused me.

“Why wouldn’t she trust you?””

“Because she thought I wanted to replace her.””

I said nothing.

“She told me she was wrong.””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“She said she had been watching Michael.””

My heart tightened.

“Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She didn’t explain at first.””

“Then what changed?””

Vanessa looked at the laptop.

“She found something.””

“What?””

“A financial connection.””

I frowned.

“Between who?””

“Michael and someone else.””

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“Your daughter’s grandfather.””

I felt dizzy.

“Sarah’s father?””

She nodded.

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Sarah’s father hated Michael?””

“No.””

“Then why would they work together?””

Vanessa looked at Mark.

He answered.

“Because they both believed they were protecting Emma.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“Protecting her?””

“Yes.””

“By taking her away from me?””

Mark didn’t respond.

And that silence was unbearable.

I stood up.

“My family was planning this behind my back.””

“No one wanted to hurt you,” Vanessa said.

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like everyone decided I wasn’t good enough to raise my own daughter.””

“That’s not what Sarah thought.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Sarah changed her mind.””

I remembered the recording.

*I was wrong about Vanessa.*

The words suddenly felt different.

Sarah wasn’t accusing Vanessa.

She was warning me about something else.

“Play the recording again.””

Mark looked surprised.

“What?””

“Play it.””

I sat down.

My hands were shaking.

I needed to hear it again.

Not as a husband.

Not as a grieving man.

As Emma’s father.

I pressed play.

Sarah’s voice filled the room again.

“Daniel…”

My heart clenched.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””

A pause.

“I need you to know something about Emma.””

The static returned.

Then:

“I was wrong about Vanessa.””

I watched Vanessa carefully.

She was crying silently.

“She isn’t the person I should have feared.””

A pause.

“I made a mistake.””

The recording crackled.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

My breathing slowed.

Sarah continued.

“Michael has been lying to us.””

My entire body went still.

“He told me Daniel was struggling.””

Another pause.

“He told me Daniel wasn’t prepared to raise Emma alone.””

My hands curled.

“He convinced me that maybe Emma needed another guardian.””

The room felt cold.

“But then I found the documents.””

My eyes moved to the papers on the table.

“The documents weren’t about helping Daniel.””

Sarah’s voice became shaky.

“They were about removing him.””

The recording stopped.

Then restarted.

A few seconds of static.

Sarah’s voice returned.

“If something happens to me, Daniel, do not trust anyone who says they’re doing this for Emma.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Because Emma doesn’t need to be saved from you.””

My breath caught.

“She needs to be protected from the people who think they own her.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because now we understood.

The documents.

The custody request.

The lies.

It wasn’t about Vanessa taking Emma.

It was bigger.

Someone had been trying to take Emma from me.

And Vanessa had been caught in the middle.

I looked at her.

“You knew Sarah believed Michael was involved.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

Her face crumpled.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of being blamed.””

I stared.

“You were already hiding things.””

“I know.””

“And you still let me believe you were against Emma.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I thought if I told you everything at once, you would hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because part of me already did.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she let my daughter suffer while she protected herself.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

The name on the screen made my blood run cold.

Michael.

My brother.

Everyone saw it.

Nobody spoke.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then Michael spoke.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I heard you found Sarah’s recording.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Because Vanessa was never supposed to show you.””

I looked at my wife.

Her face went pale.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael sighed.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

I stood up.

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“Vanessa didn’t tell you the truth because she was protecting herself.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you?””

“I’m protecting Emma.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because everyone knows what you refuse to accept.””

“What?””

Michael was silent for a moment.

Then:

“You’re not the father Sarah thought you were.””

The words cut deep.

But before I could respond, Michael continued.

“And tomorrow, when the court sees what I have, you’ll understand why Sarah was right to be afraid.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Everyone was silent.

Then I looked at Mark.

“What court?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What court?””

She slowly reached into her purse.

And pulled out another document.

Her hands were shaking.

“Daniel…”

I stared at the paper.

“What is that?””

She whispered:

“The emergency custody hearing notice.””

My heart dropped.

“When is it?””

She looked at the date.

Then at me.

“Tomorrow morning.””

And underneath the hearing information was one name.

May you like

The person who filed the petition.

*Michael Carter.*
