Chapter 6: The Voice on the Recording

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

I stared at Vanessa.

She was already looking at me.

And from the expression on her face, I knew one thing.

She had heard the name.

Her name.

“She was afraid of Vanessa.””

Margaret’s words repeated in my head.

Again.

And again.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

The walls felt like they were moving closer.

“Daniel?”” Margaret said through the phone.

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes stayed fixed on my wife.

The woman who had held my daughter.

The woman who had promised to love her.

The woman who had just spent the last hour revealing secrets she kept for four years.

“Daniel, are you still there?””

I forced myself to speak.

“Yes.””

My voice sounded empty.

“Tell me everything.””

There was a long pause.

Then Margaret sighed.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

Her voice shook.

“I was scared too.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Margaret took a shaky breath.

“Sarah called me three days before the accident.””

My heart tightened.

“She never told me.””

“Because she didn’t want you involved.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought you would confront Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to deny it.

I wanted to say this was impossible.

But every time I tried, another memory appeared.

The little things.

The things I ignored.

The way Vanessa always seemed uncomfortable when Sarah’s name came up.

The way she avoided talking about the past.

The way she became strangely defensive whenever I mentioned Emma’s mother.

“What did Sarah say?”” I asked.

Margaret’s voice became quieter.

“She said Vanessa was changing.””

I looked at my wife.

Changing.

That was the same word I had used in my own head.

Margaret continued.

“She said Vanessa was becoming obsessed with Emma.””

My stomach tightened.

“Obsessed?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“She said Vanessa wanted to erase Sarah.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“No.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped away from the table.

“Vanessa loved Sarah.””

But even as I said it, I realized how little I actually knew.

I knew the version Vanessa showed me.

Not the version she hid.

“Margaret,” I said, “if Sarah believed this, why didn’t she tell me?””

“She tried.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“What?””

“She recorded something.””

I looked at the key.

“The recording.””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You said she left it for me.””

“She did.””

“Then why don’t you have it?””

Margaret hesitated.

Because she didn’t want to answer.

“Margaret.””

“She gave it to someone she trusted.””

My eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.

“Who?””

Another silence.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Vanessa.””

The room went completely still.

I looked at my wife.

She didn’t deny it.

She didn’t defend herself.

She just stood there.

Like she had been waiting for this moment for years.

I ended the call.

Not because I was done.

Because I couldn’t listen anymore.

I placed my phone on the table.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“The recording.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t have it.””

I laughed softly.

Not from humor.

From disbelief.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Sarah gave you a recording because she trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“And you lost it?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

That made me stop.

“You have it.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Where?””

She didn’t respond.

“Where is it, Vanessa?””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When I knew what to do.””

I stared at her.

“You knew for four years.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I was trying to protect Emma.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me.””

For a moment, I saw something in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not manipulation.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I found out Sarah was investigating someone.””

“Who?””

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought I was involved.””

The words shocked me.

“You were involved?””

“No!””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“No, Daniel.””

She stepped closer.

“She was wrong about me.””

“Then why was she afraid of you?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because she misunderstood.””

I waited.

Finally, she said:

“Sarah thought I wanted to replace her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She thought I wanted to become Emma’s mother.””

I didn’t answer.

Because that was the truth.

Vanessa did want that.

She had said it herself.

“You did want that.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“But not like this.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the stairs.

Toward Emma’s room.

“I loved her.””

The words felt wrong.

Not because they couldn’t be true.

Because they came too late.

“You loved her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she think you were dangerous?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

She didn’t answer.

And I realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t hiding one secret.

She was hiding a lifetime of them.

“Show me the recording.””

Her face went pale.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s not just about me.””

I stared.

“Then who is it about?””

She looked toward Mark.

He had been silent the entire time.

Too silent.

I turned.

“What does he know?””

Mark didn’t respond.

“Mark.””

He sighed.

“I know enough.””

“Enough for what?””

“To know this situation is more complicated than you think.””

I walked toward him.

“No.””

I pointed at the door.

“You walked into my house.””

“You threatened me.””

“You brought legal documents about my daughter.””

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’ve been working with Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“And now you’re telling me there’s more?””

Mark stayed quiet.

That was answer enough.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She gave a small shake of her head.

“No.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to decide anymore.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I felt something inside me finally break.

“For years, everyone decided what I could handle.””

Sarah.

Her family.

You.

Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.

I pointed toward the table.

“My daughter is upstairs afraid someone is going to take her away.””

My voice cracked.

“And I’m standing here finding out my dead wife left evidence because she was scared.””

I looked at Mark.

“So tell me.””

He stared at me.

Then slowly reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My breath caught.

“What is that?””

“Something Sarah left.””

I stepped forward.

He held it out.

“Why do you have it?””

“Because Sarah’s father gave it to me.””

I took the envelope.

My hands shook.

On the front was my name.

Written in Sarah’s handwriting.

*For Daniel.*

My heart broke.

I hadn’t seen her handwriting in years.

I traced the letters with my thumb.

“What’s inside?””

Mark looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She wanted you to hear it after she was gone.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a small memory card.

A recording.

Something Sarah had protected until her last days.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

I inserted the memory card into my laptop.

Everyone stood around the table.

Then I pressed play.

For a few seconds, there was only static.

Then a sound.

A familiar voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in four years.

Sarah.

“Daniel…”

My knees almost gave out.

It was really her.

Older recordings weren’t supposed to hurt.

But they did.

Because for one second, I forgot she was gone.

Then Sarah spoke again.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””

I held my breath.

Her voice trembled.

“I need you to know something about Emma.””

The recording crackled.

Then Sarah said the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“I was wrong about Vanessa.””

I looked at my wife.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I thought she was trying to hurt us.””

A pause.

A shaky breath.

“But I discovered the truth.””

The room went silent.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Vanessa wasn’t the person I needed to fear.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Mark.

At Vanessa.

At the recording.

Then Sarah said:

“The person who wanted Emma taken away was someone much closer.””

The audio cut for a second.

Then came back.

May you like

And the next words destroyed everything I believed.

“Daniel… your own brother is the reason I died.””
