Chapter 9: The Recording That Exposed Them All

The recorder was old.

The kind people used before phones could capture everything.

But the moment Daniel pressed play…

My mother’s voice filled the church.

“Hello, Amara.””

I covered my mouth.

For the first time in years…

I heard her.

Not in memory.

Not in dreams.

Her real voice.

“If you’re hearing this, then you are old enough to know why I left.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to know that every day away from you hurt me.””

I closed my eyes.

“She loved you,” Daniel whispered.

The recording continued.

“Richard Bennett threatened me. He wanted the evidence I found.””

A pause.

“But William made a mistake.””

Everyone looked at him.

My mother’s voice continued.

“He was afraid. He made choices he regrets.””

William lowered his head.

“But William never stopped loving us.””

My heart tightened.

Then her voice changed.

More serious.

“The evidence Richard wants is not just about money.””

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s about the company.””

The recording continued.

“Richard has been hiding financial crimes for years. Daniel tried to expose him. I tried to help.””

A sound came from the recording.

Like she was crying.

“But someone betrayed us.””

William whispered:

“No.””

My mother continued.

“The person who gave Richard information…”

The church became silent.

“…was William.””

I looked at my father.

The pain on his face said everything.

“You knew.””

William nodded.

“I did.””

My anger returned.

“You betrayed her.””

“I thought I was protecting her.””

“By telling Richard?””

“I didn’t know what he would do.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your father was manipulated.””

I looked at him.

“Does that excuse it?””

“No.””

William answered.

His voice was quiet.

“It doesn’t.””

The recording continued.

“William, if you are hearing this, I hope you understand something.””

A pause.

“You were never the enemy.””

I looked at him.

“But fear can make good people do terrible things.””

The final part of the recording made everyone freeze.

“If Richard ever finds this evidence, he will try to destroy it.””

A click.

Then:

“The real proof is hidden with the person nobody would suspect.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at William.

“He doesn’t know.””

“Know what?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out another envelope.

“The evidence was never with your mother.””

My heart raced.

“Then where was it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She gave it to someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

He handed me the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

I dropped the picture.

“No.””

William picked it up.

His face went white.

May you like

Because the person standing beside my mother…

Was Principal Harris.
