Chapter 8: The Brother Behind the Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
The file sat on my desk.
The photograph of William, Richard, and Daniel stared back at me.
A family secret.
Another hidden chapter.
Another person who knew more than I did.
By sunrise, I had made a decision.
I needed the truth.
Not Richard’s version.
Not William’s.
The truth.
When I walked into the living room, William immediately knew something was wrong.
“You saw him.””
I looked at him.
“You knew about Daniel.””
His face changed.
Margaret covered her mouth.
William slowly sat down.
“Where did you hear that name?””
“Answer me.””
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“My brother.””
I felt betrayed.
“You had a brother?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I thought he was dead.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
William looked away.
“Daniel disappeared when we were young.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“Because my father ruined his life.””
I stared.
“Then why did Richard say you were involved?””
William closed his eyes.
“Because I was.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you do?””
He looked at me.
“I helped my father hide something.””
The room went silent.
Finally.
The truth.
Not the version he wanted me to hear.
Not the version that protected him.
The truth.
“What?””
“When Daniel discovered my father was using the company to hide illegal activities, he wanted to expose him.””
“And you stopped him?””
“I was afraid.””
The anger inside me burned.
“You protected him.””
“Yes.””
William’s voice broke.
“And I have regretted it every day since.””
Margaret spoke softly.
“Adeline found out.””
I turned.
“She knew?””
William nodded.
“She found Daniel’s evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“A recording.””
I froze.
“A recording of Richard.””
William continued.
“She planned to expose him.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
His eyes filled.
“Because she found out she was being followed.””
A chill moved through me.
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice whispered:
“Amara?””
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
“Who is this?””
The voice trembled.
“It’s someone who knew your mother.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daniel Bennett.””
I stopped breathing.
William grabbed my phone.
“Where are you?””
Daniel ignored him.
“Your father has spent years trying to fix what he did.””
William went pale.
Daniel continued.
“But Richard has spent years making sure nobody learns the truth.””
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“Come to the old church outside town.””
The call ended.
William looked terrified.
“He’s alive.””
I stared at him.
“You thought he was dead.””
“I did.””
“Then we’re going.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
“I won’t let you walk into danger.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“I spent eighteen years without answers because everyone decided what I could handle.””
I looked directly at him.
“I’m done being protected by lies.””
An hour later, we stood outside the abandoned church.
The doors opened slowly.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Tired.
But his eyes were familiar.
He looked at me.
And immediately started crying.
“Amara.””
I froze.
“How do you know me?””
He looked at the blue dress.
“The same way your mother knew you would come.””
He reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a small recorder.
“She left this with me.””
My heart raced.
“What’s on it?””
May you like
Daniel looked toward William.
“Everything.””
