Chapter 7: The Man Who Helped Her Hide the Truth
“Richard Bennett.””
Marcus repeated the name so quietly that Maya almost didn't hear him.
His older brother.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
The man who had toasted Maya's graduation that morning before an unexpected work call forced him to leave the family gathering early.
The man who had helped Marcus choose the engagement ring for Vanessa.
The man who had once told Marcus that marrying a woman with a child was the noblest thing he could do.
Marcus stared at the handwritten note beneath the hospital employee's statement.
Richard had been there the night Maya was born.
And according to the documents Elena had preserved, he might have helped Vanessa conceal the truth about Adrian Cole.
“No,” Marcus whispered.
Daniel Whitmore remained silent.
Marcus pushed the paper away.
“Richard was living in another state when Maya was born.””
“According to Elena's notes, he was visiting Philadelphia that week,” the attorney replied.
“Visiting me?””
“No. He was working on a business arrangement.””
Marcus shook his head.
“This doesn't make sense.””
He remembered Richard arriving at the hospital the morning after Maya's birth.
He remembered his brother bringing flowers and a stuffed rabbit.
He remembered Richard telling him that Vanessa had been through a difficult delivery and needed time to recover.
He remembered Richard insisting that Marcus shouldn't ask too many questions about the biological father.
At the time, Marcus had thought his brother was simply trying to protect him from an uncomfortable situation.
Now every memory carried a different meaning.
Maya touched his arm.
“Dad, are you sure it's Uncle Richard?””
Marcus looked at her.
“The name is right there.””
“But maybe there's an explanation.””
He wanted to believe her.
He wanted to believe there was some mistake in the records, some innocent reason his brother's name had appeared in a file about a disputed birth certificate.
But the more he thought about it, the more he remembered.
Richard had always known exactly what to say whenever Adrian's name came up.
He had told Marcus that Vanessa needed stability.
He had told him that a child needed one dependable father rather than two men fighting over her.
And when Marcus had hesitated before signing the adoption paperwork, Richard had taken him aside and said, “You're the only father that little girl needs. Don't let another man's mistakes make you doubt that.””
Marcus had thanked him.
He had believed him.
Now those words sounded less like encouragement and more like a warning.
Whitmore closed the file.
“Mr. Bennett, I recommend that you avoid making accusations until the evidence is independently reviewed.””
Marcus stood.
“I'm not going to accuse anyone. I'm going to ask my brother a question.””
“And if he refuses to answer?””
“Then I'll know something else I didn't know yesterday.””
Maya stood beside him.
“I'm coming with you.””
Marcus hesitated.
“This could get ugly.””
“I've spent four years wondering why my mother wouldn't tell me the truth. I'm not going to wait in the car while everyone else decides what I'm allowed to know.””
He looked at her face.
Then he nodded.
“Stay beside me.””
Before they left, Whitmore gave them copies of the documents and a written authorization allowing them to request additional records.
He also handed Marcus a sealed note from Elena.
“This was the last item she entrusted to me,” he explained.
“She asked that you read it only after learning Richard's name.””
Marcus held the envelope carefully.
His sister had anticipated this moment.
That thought hurt more than he expected.
Elena had known something was wrong.
She had tried to warn him.
And he had let Vanessa convince him that his own sister was jealous, unstable, and determined to ruin his marriage.
He opened the note in the elevator.
The handwriting was familiar enough to bring tears to his eyes.
Marcus, if Richard's name has reached you, then I was right to worry.
He stopped walking.
Maya waited beside him.
He continued reading.
I don't believe your brother began this deception because he wanted to hurt you. I believe he made one terrible choice to protect someone, then spent years protecting that choice.
Marcus swallowed.
But a lie does not become harmless because the person telling it loves you.
He lowered the letter.
For sixteen years, Richard had stood beside him while he raised Maya.
If the evidence was correct, his brother had watched him sacrifice money, time, and opportunities for a child whose biological father had been trying to contact her.
He had watched Marcus become a father through love while concealing the truth about the man who had given Maya life.
Marcus folded the letter and put it in his pocket.
“I need to call him.””
He dialed Richard's number.
His brother answered on the fourth ring.
“Hey, little brother. How did the graduation go?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The casual warmth in Richard's voice almost made him abandon the question.
Almost.
“Where were you the night Maya was born?””
Silence.
Then Richard laughed uneasily.
“What kind of question is that?””
“Answer it.””
“Marcus, I'm in the middle of something.””
“Were you at the hospital?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because it wasn't relevant.””
“Was Adrian Cole there?””
Richard stopped breathing audibly for a moment.
“Who told you that name?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
She stood motionless beside him.
“That's not an answer.””
Richard exhaled.
“Where are you?””
“Coming to see you.””
“Don't.””
The word came too quickly.
Marcus straightened.
“Why?””
“Because you're upset, and I don't want you doing something you'll regret.””
“I'm asking you about my daughter.””
“I know.””
“No, Richard. I don't think you do.””
His brother's voice dropped.
“Please. Not over the phone.””
Marcus ended the call.
He and Maya drove directly to Richard's house.
Richard lived in a large stone home outside the city, the kind of house Marcus had always admired but never wanted badly enough to sacrifice his time with Maya.
When they arrived, Richard was waiting on the front steps.
He looked older than Marcus remembered from the graduation ceremony that morning.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His expression was strained.
And when he saw the envelope in Marcus's hand, he didn't ask what it contained.
He simply said, “You spoke to Whitmore.””
Marcus walked past him into the house.
Maya followed.
Richard closed the door.
For several seconds, the three of them stood in the entryway.
Then Marcus placed the hospital statement on a table.
“Tell me why your name is on this.””
Richard looked down.
His shoulders sagged.
“I was trying to help.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Help whom?””
Richard looked toward Maya.
“Both of you.””
Maya's voice was cold.
“You helped my mother keep me from knowing my father existed.””
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds exactly like what you did.””
Richard flinched.
Marcus moved closer.
“Did you know Adrian wanted to see Maya?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know Vanessa told me he had abandoned her?””
“Yes.””
“Did you help her change the birth record?””
Richard rubbed his face.
“I didn't change the record myself.””
“Did you help her?””
A long silence followed.
Then Richard nodded.
Marcus stepped back as if he had been struck.
“Why?””
Richard sat heavily on a chair.
“Vanessa was terrified. She believed Adrian would take Maya away from her. She thought if his name remained on the record, he could use it to challenge everything she had built.””
“So you helped her?””
“I thought I was preventing a custody battle.””
“By lying to me?””
Richard looked up.
“You loved Vanessa. You wanted a family. I thought if you knew Adrian was still involved, you'd hesitate to marry her.””
Marcus stared at him in disbelief.
“You decided what I was allowed to know about my own life?””
“I made a mistake.””
“You made a decision that affected sixteen years of my life.””
Richard's eyes filled.
“I know.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Did you ever think about what it would do to me?””
Richard looked at her.
“Every day.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because by the time I understood what Vanessa had done, you were already calling Marcus Dad. You were happy. You had a home. I convinced myself that telling you the truth would only hurt you.””
Maya shook her head.
“You didn't protect me. You protected your secret.””
Richard looked down.
Marcus could no longer contain his anger.
“You watched me sign those adoption papers. You stood beside me while I promised to raise her as my own. You knew I was making that choice without the full truth.””
“I wanted you to be her father.””
“I WAS her father!””
The shout startled them all.
Marcus took a breath, struggling to regain control.
“I didn't need you to lie to make me love her. I didn't need Adrian to disappear to make me stay. You robbed all of us of the chance to make our own decisions.””
Richard covered his face.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
Marcus picked up the papers.
“Because if you understood what you did, you would have told me years ago.””
Richard looked at Maya.
“I'm sorry.””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she asked the question Marcus hadn't thought to ask.
“Did Adrian know you were helping my mother?””
Richard lowered his hands.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he expose you?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Because he was afraid that if he fought Vanessa, she'd make sure he never saw you. He thought the legal system would become a battlefield, and he didn't want you growing up in the middle of it.””
Maya's eyes filled.
“So he stayed away because he thought it was best for me?””
“That's what he told me.””
“And you believed him?””
Richard's voice broke.
“I didn't know what to believe anymore.””
Maya stepped back.
For a moment, she looked like the six-year-old girl Marcus remembered, the child who had once hidden behind a coat because she was afraid of unfamiliar adults.
Then she lifted her chin.
“You don't get to decide what's best for me anymore.””
She turned toward the door.
Marcus followed her.
Richard rose.
“Marcus, wait.””
Marcus stopped without turning.
“Is there anything else I need to know?””
Richard said nothing.
Marcus looked back.
“Anything?””
His brother swallowed.
“There was a second letter.””
Marcus went still.
“What second letter?””
“Adrian sent it to me after you and Vanessa got married. He said he had evidence that the hospital records had been altered. He wanted me to help him establish contact with Maya.””
“And?””
“I destroyed it.””
Maya made a small sound of disbelief.
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Marcus stared at his brother.
“You keep using that word as if it excuses everything.””
He opened the door.
Outside, the afternoon sunlight was fading.
Maya walked toward the car without looking back.
Marcus followed, his mind racing.
He had discovered the truth about Vanessa's deception.
He had discovered his brother's role in it.
But Richard's confession had raised another question.
If Adrian had sent a second letter containing evidence, then perhaps the truth had never been as difficult to find as everyone had claimed.
Perhaps someone had simply made sure it stayed hidden.
As Marcus started the car, his phone vibrated.
An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.
He answered.
A man's voice came through, quiet and steady.
“Mr. Bennett? My name is Adrian Cole.””
Marcus gripped the steering wheel.
Adrian continued.
“I understand Maya has finally seen the documents.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
She had turned toward him, her eyes wide.
“Where are you?”” Marcus asked.
“Philadelphia.””
“Why are you calling now?””
“Because I received a message telling me that Vanessa's secret had come out.””
Marcus's heart hammered.
“Who sent it?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then he said, “The person who helped her hide the truth just confessed to you, didn't he?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Adrian's voice grew heavier.
“Then there's something you need to know about Richard. He wasn't the only person who helped Vanessa.””
The call ended before Marcus could ask who else had been involved.
And as he looked at Maya, he realized that the story of her birth was far from over.
Someone else had helped bury the truth.
May you like
Someone they both knew.
And that person might still be trying to keep Adrian silent.
