Chapter 6: What Happened Before Maya Was Born

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Marcus stared at the last line of Adrian's letter, trying to understand why it had been written as a warning.

Maya sat beside him, her face drained of color.

Daniel Whitmore folded his hands on the table.

“I want to be clear about something before we proceed. These documents establish serious questions about what happened, but they do not answer every legal question. Some of the original records may require independent verification.””

Marcus barely heard him.

“Who signed the second birth record?””

Whitmore pointed to the photocopy.

“The name is visible in the hospital's administrative log. However, the signature on the altered record does not match the signature in the log.””

“So someone forged it?””

“Possibly. We cannot establish that from the copy alone.””

Maya looked up.

“Then why did Aunt Elena keep saying Mom was responsible?””

“Because Elena believed Vanessa had arranged the change,” Whitmore replied.

“She also believed someone else had helped her.””

Marcus leaned back.

“Who?””

The attorney opened another folder.

“An employee at the hospital was questioned after the discrepancy was discovered. That person later left the hospital, and the investigation was never completed.””

“Why not?””

“According to Elena's notes, Vanessa withdrew her complaint and refused to provide a statement.””

Maya stared at him.

“Mom filed a complaint?””

“Yes.””

“Against whom?””

Whitmore looked at Marcus before answering.

“Against Adrian Cole.””

Maya's mouth fell open.

Marcus felt the pieces rearranging themselves.

Vanessa had told him Adrian was dangerous.

She had told him he abandoned her.

She had told him that keeping him away was necessary to protect Maya.

Yet the records suggested that Vanessa had been the one who involved authorities, then withdrew her complaint before anyone could establish what had happened.

“What did she accuse him of?”” Marcus asked.

Whitmore removed a thin report from the folder.

“Threatening to take Maya away from her.””

Maya's face tightened.

“But he never threatened that.””

“We have a letter in which Adrian specifically says he wanted a mediated arrangement and did not intend to remove Maya from Vanessa's care.””

Marcus read the passage himself.

Adrian had written that he understood Vanessa was frightened and that he would accept supervised visits if necessary.

He had offered to contribute to Maya's expenses.

He had promised not to disrupt her home.

The letter was respectful.

Almost painfully so.

Marcus lowered it.

“He sounds like a man who wanted to be a father.””

“He appears to have made several attempts to establish contact,” Whitmore said.

“Then why did he stop?””

The attorney hesitated.

“Because he was told Maya had been adopted by another man and that continued contact would cause legal problems.””

Marcus went still.

“Who told him that?””

Whitmore slid another document across the table.

It was a copy of a letter sent to Adrian's last known address.

The handwriting belonged to Vanessa.

Maya read the first few lines.

Then she covered her mouth.

The letter stated that Vanessa had married Marcus, that Maya had a stable family, and that Adrian should not attempt to contact them again.

It also stated that Marcus had legally adopted Maya and that any further communication might be considered harassment.

Marcus looked at the date.

He remembered the adoption process.

He remembered Vanessa telling him that the paperwork was routine.

He remembered signing several documents in her presence and trusting her to explain anything he didn't understand.

“Did I adopt Maya legally?”” he asked.

Whitmore nodded.

“Yes. The adoption appears to have been finalized properly.””

Marcus released a breath.

“Then what does this mean?””

“It means your relationship with Maya is legally recognized. The questions surrounding her original birth record and Adrian's attempts to establish contact are separate matters.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

“So nothing changes between us?””

“Nothing about the love you've shared changes,” Whitmore replied.

“But you may discover information that changes how you understand the past.””

Marcus squeezed Maya's hand.

“That isn't something we have to face alone.””

She nodded, though her eyes remained fixed on Adrian's letter.

“I want to meet him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

“No. But I want the chance to decide for myself.””

Whitmore made a note.

“I can contact his attorney and arrange a meeting if both parties agree.””

Maya looked up sharply.

“He has an attorney?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Adrian has been involved in a civil dispute related to the records for several years. He has not pursued a claim against Maya, but he has sought access to certain documents.””

Marcus frowned.

“What kind of dispute?””

Whitmore turned to a different folder.

“This is where matters become more complicated.””

He removed a photocopy of a letter dated twelve years earlier.

It had been sent by Vanessa to Adrian.

The first page was ordinary enough.

She accused him of interfering in her marriage.

She warned him not to contact Maya.

She insisted that his attempts to reopen the past were selfish.

But the second page was different.

It referred to a financial arrangement between them.

Marcus read the paragraph twice.

“What is this payment?””

Whitmore adjusted his glasses.

“Adrian appears to have transferred money to Vanessa on several occasions. The records Elena collected suggest that the payments were intended to settle a dispute concerning the circumstances surrounding Maya's birth.””

Maya turned toward him.

“Mom took money from him?””

“We cannot determine the purpose of every payment from these records,” Whitmore said carefully.

“But the correspondence suggests that Adrian believed he was paying for the right to remain involved in his daughter's life without further conflict.””

Marcus felt sick.

He remembered the year Vanessa bought a new car without explaining where the down payment came from.

He remembered a large deposit into their joint account that she attributed to an inheritance from a distant relative.

He remembered asking about it and being told not to worry.

He had believed her.

He had always believed her.

“How much?”” he asked.

Whitmore opened a ledger.

“The surviving documents show several transfers. The total appears to be substantial, although I would need a financial specialist to verify the full amount.””

Marcus stared at the figures.

Maya began to cry silently.

“Why would she do that?””

Neither man answered.

Because there were too many possible reasons, and none of them would make the truth easier to accept.

Whitmore gave Maya a moment before continuing.

“Elena believed the financial arrangements were only one part of what happened. She left a note asking me to show you another document if you reached this stage.””

He opened the final folder.

Inside was a handwritten statement from a former hospital employee.

The statement described a conversation that had taken place the night Maya was born.

According to the employee, Vanessa had been distressed after learning that Adrian had arrived at the hospital.

She feared he would insist on being listed as the father.

She also feared that if Marcus learned Adrian had remained involved, he might never marry her.

Marcus felt the room grow cold.

The employee claimed Vanessa had asked for the paperwork to be changed before the birth record was finalized.

The statement did not establish that she had personally altered the document.

But it suggested she had known about the change.

And it described a confrontation between Vanessa and Adrian in a hospital corridor.

Maya leaned forward.

“What did they say to each other?””

Whitmore read from the statement.

“Adrian told Vanessa he wanted to be present for his daughter's life. Vanessa told him she would never allow him to destroy the family she intended to build.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He could almost hear her voice.

He could picture the fear beneath her anger.

But he could not understand how that fear had become a justification for everything that followed.

The statement continued.

Adrian had asked Vanessa to stop telling people he had abandoned them.

He had warned that the truth would eventually come out.

Vanessa had replied that if he loved Maya, he would leave her alone.

The former employee then described hearing a crash.

When she returned to the corridor, Adrian was gone.

Vanessa was sitting on the floor, crying.

The next morning, a complaint was filed alleging that Adrian had threatened to take Maya.

Marcus placed the statement down.

“Was Adrian arrested?””

“No,” Whitmore replied.

“The complaint was withdrawn before the matter proceeded.””

“Was he charged with anything?””

“Not according to the records we have.””

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“Then why did Mom tell everyone he was dangerous?””

Whitmore's expression softened.

“That is a question only your mother can answer.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

He had come to the office expecting to learn the identity of Maya's biological father.

Instead, he had discovered a pattern of deliberate concealment that stretched across years.

Letters withheld.

Records altered or disputed.

Payments unexplained.

A man portrayed as a villain without evidence that he had committed the acts described.

And a sister who had spent her final months trying to make sure the truth survived.

Marcus thought of Elena's last letter.

He wished he could call her.

He wished he could tell her she had been right to worry.

Most of all, he wished he had listened.

Maya rested her head against his shoulder.

“Dad, I don't know what to feel.””

“You don't have to decide today.””

“What if I want to meet Adrian and it hurts you?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Then I'll help you through it.””

“What if he isn't the person I hope he is?””

“Then we'll deal with that, too.””

“And what if he is?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Then you'll have learned something important about yourself.””

Maya began to cry harder.

He held her while she let out the grief she had carried since childhood.

Whitmore quietly gathered the papers, leaving the most important documents on the table.

When Maya finally sat upright, the attorney spoke again.

“There is one more thing you should know before you leave.””

Marcus looked up.

“What now?””

“Adrian has been trying to locate Elena's complete file for years. He believes it contains evidence concerning a second person who was present at the hospital the night Maya was born.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Whitmore opened a small notebook.

“Elena never identified that person by name in her written instructions.””

“Then how do you know there was someone else?””

“Because of a message Adrian left for me six months ago.””

The attorney removed a printed email.

It was short.

I know Vanessa did not act alone. If Elena's documents are ever found, please make sure Marcus understands that the person who helped her is still alive.

Marcus read the message.

Then he looked at Maya.

She was staring at the hospital statement, her expression slowly changing.

“Dad,” she whispered.

“What is it?””

She pointed to the bottom of the page.

The former employee had added a handwritten note beneath her signature.

It identified the person who had accompanied Vanessa to the hospital that night.

Marcus read the name.

Then he read it again.

He knew that name.

He had trusted that person for years.

The person had attended his wedding.

Celebrated Maya's birthdays.

Sat at his dinner table.

And stood beside him during the adoption proceedings.

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes to Whitmore.

“Why didn't Elena tell me this?””

Whitmore's face was grave.

“Because she believed the person was dangerous.””

Maya clutched her father's arm.

Outside, traffic moved steadily through the Philadelphia streets.

Inside the conference room, Marcus stared at the name that had changed everything he thought he knew.

He had believed the truth was hidden in Vanessa's past.

May you like

Now he understood that the person who helped bury it might have been standing beside him all along.

And when he finally spoke that person's name aloud, even Daniel Whitmore looked afraid.
