Chapter 4: The Call Vanessa Was Afraid to Answer

Marcus had heard Vanessa lie before.

He had heard her deny spending money they couldn't afford to lose, heard her insist that arguments never happened the way he remembered them, and heard her explain away every unanswered question about Maya's childhood.

But he had never heard her sound like this.

“He was never supposed to contact you.””

The sentence followed Marcus out of the auditorium and into the bright afternoon sunlight.

Maya walked beside him, her graduation gown brushing against her legs. She still carried her diploma, but she kept glancing at the cream-colored envelope in her father's hand.

Vanessa followed several steps behind them.

Her heels struck the pavement in quick, angry taps.

“Marcus, we need to talk privately,” she said.

He stopped beside the university's stone entrance.

“We've had sixteen years of private conversations, Vanessa. Somehow, I'm still learning the truth about my own family in public.””

Her expression hardened.

“Don't make this sound like I deliberately hurt you.””

“What am I supposed to call it?””

She glanced at Maya.

“Not in front of her.””

Maya gave a bitter laugh.

“You didn't seem concerned about embarrassing him when you told him he would never be my real father.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“That was between your mother and Marcus.””

“No. You said it while I was receiving my degree. You said it because you wanted him to feel small.””

Maya's voice trembled, but she didn't back down.

“And now you're frightened because I have something you can't control.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

For a moment, Marcus thought she might slap her daughter.

Instead, she looked toward the parking lot.

“I'm going home.””

“No,” Marcus said.

The firmness in his voice surprised all three of them.

Vanessa turned slowly.

“What did you say?””

“I said we're not pretending this didn't happen.””

“You can't keep me here.””

“I'm not asking you to stay. I'm telling you that I need answers, and I'm done accepting excuses.””

She stared at him as if he had become someone unfamiliar.

Perhaps, Marcus thought, he had.

For years, he had confused keeping the peace with protecting his family.

He had swallowed his doubts because he believed a stable home mattered more than being right.

He had defended Vanessa whenever someone questioned her behavior.

He had even defended her against Elena.

And now he was beginning to understand that silence had never protected Maya.

It had only protected the person who controlled the story.

Maya reached for his hand.

“Dad, there's one more thing I need to tell you.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“When I turned eighteen, I didn't just receive the envelope. I also received a letter from Aunt Elena's attorney.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Marcus noticed.

So did Maya.

“What did the letter say?”” he asked.

Maya swallowed.

“It said that if I ever discovered the original birth record, I should contact him before confronting anyone named in the documents.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I was afraid Mom would find out.””

Vanessa let out a sharp, incredulous breath.

“You've been planning this for four years?””

Maya shook her head.

“I've been trying to understand why you wouldn't let me ask questions.””

“Because some questions don't have answers that help anyone!””

“Then why are you so terrified of the answers?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus took the small card from Maya.

The attorney's name was Daniel Whitmore.

Beneath it was the address of a law office in downtown Philadelphia.

There was also a handwritten phone number.

He pulled out his phone.

Vanessa stepped forward immediately.

“Don't call him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he's been waiting for this moment. Elena hated me. She wanted to destroy our marriage, and she found someone who would help her.””

“Then there should be nothing to fear.””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa's eyes moved between Marcus and Maya.

For the first time since their marriage, she looked like a person trapped by the consequences of her own decisions.

Her phone vibrated again.

She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and rejected the call.

Marcus saw the name before she turned the display away.

Adrian Cole.

The name printed on Maya's birth record.

The name on the letter.

The name Vanessa had spent sixteen years insisting was irrelevant.

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

“Adrian is calling you?””

Vanessa shoved the phone into her purse.

“It doesn't mean anything.””

“Then answer it.””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I said no!””

Her voice cracked across the parking lot.

A couple walking past them turned to look.

Vanessa lowered her voice, but the panic remained.

“You have no idea what Adrian is capable of.””

Maya stepped closer.

“You told me he was a coward who abandoned me.””

“He was.””

“Then why are you afraid of him?””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

And for one brief moment, Marcus saw something that made his stomach tighten.

Not hatred.

Not even anger.

Recognition.

As though Maya had just asked a question Vanessa had spent years trying not to hear.

Marcus opened his phone and dialed the number on the card.

Vanessa reached for his wrist.

He pulled away.

The call rang twice.

A man answered.

“Whitmore and Associates.””

“My name is Marcus Bennett. I'm calling about Elena Bennett's estate and a letter she left concerning my daughter, Maya.””

There was a pause.

Then the receptionist asked him to hold.

Marcus heard faint office sounds through the speaker.

A printer.

A door closing.

Someone speaking in the distance.

Then another voice came onto the line.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“This is Marcus.””

“My name is Daniel Whitmore. I've been expecting your call for a very long time.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus noticed that her hands were trembling.

Whitmore continued.

“Are you with Maya?””

“Yes.””

“Is your wife there as well?””

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.

“She is.””

The attorney paused.

“Then I need to be careful about what I say over the telephone. Elena left specific instructions concerning the documents in my possession.””

“What documents?””

“An original affidavit, correspondence, and evidence related to the circumstances surrounding Maya's birth.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

“Did my wife alter Maya's birth record?””

Another silence.

“I believe that question is best answered after you've reviewed the file.””

“Why?””

“Because the documents contain information that could affect more than one person's legal rights.””

Vanessa made a small, strangled sound.

Marcus turned toward her.

“What legal rights?””

Whitmore answered before she could.

“Mr. Bennett, can you and Maya come to my office tomorrow morning? I can arrange a meeting at nine.””

Marcus agreed.

Then he asked the question that had been burning inside him since he read Elena's letter.

“Did Adrian Cole try to contact his daughter?””

The attorney didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice had changed.

“Yes.””

Maya pressed a hand over her mouth.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“How many times?””

“I can explain that when you arrive.””

“Was he told she wanted nothing to do with him?””

“Yes.””

“By whom?””

Whitmore exhaled slowly.

“By someone who claimed to be speaking on Maya's behalf.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had gone pale.

“Was that person my wife?””

“Mr. Bennett, I cannot make that determination for you over the phone. But I can tell you this: Elena believed Maya had been denied information about her biological father, and she spent considerable time trying to preserve evidence of what happened.””

The call ended a few minutes later.

Marcus stood motionless beside the car.

Maya leaned against him.

“Dad?””

He looked down.

“I'm here.””

“Are you angry with me?””

The question nearly broke him.

He took her face gently between his hands.

“Sweetheart, you could never be responsible for what the adults in your life chose to hide.””

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“You were a child when this started. Then you were a young woman trying to understand something your own mother wouldn't explain.””

He pulled her into his arms.

“You don't owe me an apology for wanting the truth.””

Behind them, Vanessa began walking toward the parking lot exit.

Marcus released Maya and called after her.

“Where are you going?””

“Home.””

“We need to talk.””

“No, Marcus. You need to decide whether you're going to believe your wife or a dead woman's accusations.””

He watched her reach her car.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped without turning around.

“Who is Adrian Cole?””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked over her shoulder.

“He's the man who ruined my life before you ever met me.””

She opened her car door.

“And if you find out what he really did, you'll understand why I had to keep him away.””

She drove off before Marcus could ask another question.

Maya watched the car disappear.

Then she reached into her gown and pulled out a second folded paper.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

She hesitated before handing it to him.

“I found this with Aunt Elena's things. I didn't want to show you until I knew you were ready.””

He unfolded it.

It was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

The date was sixteen years old.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Adrian Cole.

Marcus read the final sentence.

If Vanessa refuses to let me see my daughter, I will have no choice but to tell Marcus what happened that night.

Marcus stared at the words.

“What night?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don't know.””

He looked toward the road where Vanessa had disappeared.

For sixteen years, he had believed his wife was protecting a little girl from a man who didn't want her.

Now he was beginning to suspect that she had been protecting herself from a man who knew the truth.

And whatever had happened that night, Vanessa had been willing to let everyone she loved believe a lie rather than face it.

Tomorrow morning, Marcus would learn why.

But first, he needed to find out whether the woman he had spent sixteen years loving had ever intended to tell him the truth at all.
