Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Betrayal

“It says Vanessa didn’t steal your money alone.””

My father’s words made the room feel smaller.

For a few seconds, nobody reacted.

Not because we didn’t understand.

Because we did.

And the idea was worse than anything I had imagined.

Vanessa had lied.

Vanessa had taken money.

Vanessa had tried to change ownership of my home.

But now my father was saying there was someone else.

Someone who had helped her.

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn’t surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She wasn’t asking who.

She wasn’t denying it.

She was just staring at the floor.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“Who?”” my father asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa slowly looked up.

“I don’t know.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Don’t lie again.””

“I’m not.””

“You expect me to believe someone helped you access my daughter’s trust, move money, and create fraudulent documents without knowing who they were?””

Vanessa looked away.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

“What was it supposed to be?””

She didn’t answer.

My father grabbed his phone.

“Mark sent the document.””

He opened the file.

I watched his eyes move across the screen.

The longer he read, the more his face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the phone toward me.

I looked at the document.

Most of it was legal language.

Names.

Dates.

Account numbers.

I barely understood any of it.

But one section stood out.

A signature.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa’s.

Someone else’s.

Underneath it was a name.

My father saw me reading it.

“Maya, do you know that person?””

I looked at the name.

My heart stopped.

Because I did.

Not well.

But enough.

“No.””

My voice came out uncertain.

My father looked at me.

“You recognized it.””

I swallowed.

“It’s familiar.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

My father noticed.

“You know who it is.””

She stayed quiet.

“Vanessa.””

Finally, she whispered:

“His name is Richard.””

My father froze.

I frowned.

“Who is Richard?””

Nobody answered.

And then I saw my father’s face.

A memory crossed his expression.

A painful one.

“Richard Hale?””

Vanessa nodded.

The color disappeared from my father’s face.

“No.””

The way he said it made me afraid.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“Richard was my business partner.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

My father sat down slowly.

“Years ago.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He helped build the company.””

My father’s hands tightened around the phone.

“Until he betrayed me.””

The dining room went silent.

I looked between them.

“How?””

My father stared at the document.

“He manipulated financial records. Moved money without authorization. I discovered it before he could do serious damage.””

“But he wasn’t arrested?””

My father shook his head.

“He disappeared.””

Vanessa whispered:

“He came back.””

My father looked at her.

“You knew he came back?””

Her silence answered.

The anger in my father’s face was immediate.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

“You worked with him.””

“I made one mistake.””

My father stood.

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“You keep saying that like everything happened accidentally.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But I was starting to see through it.

She wasn’t scared because she was innocent.

She was scared because every secret was being pulled into the light.

“How did Richard get involved?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

So I asked again.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He contacted me.””

“When?””

My stomach tightened.

That was around the time Vanessa started acting differently.

The sudden interest in my future.

The questions about the trust.

The constant comments about money.

“What did he want?””

She looked down.

“At first?””

“Yes.””

“To know if the trust was protected.””

My father stared at her.

“You talked to him about Maya’s trust?””

“I didn’t give him details.””

“You knew he was dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“You were scared?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Losing everything.””

The answer was so simple.

So honest.

That it almost shocked me.

She wasn’t pretending anymore.

She was finally admitting the reason behind everything.

My father shook his head.

“You had a home.””

“You had security.””

“You had my family.””

She looked at him.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

“I had your family.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then back at him.

“It means every room in this house reminded me that I wasn’t the person who belonged here.””

My expression hardened.

“So you punished me?””

“No.””

“You did.””

She looked away.

For once, she didn’t argue.

That was worse.

My father picked up the phone again.

“I need to know exactly what Richard did.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“He helped me access the accounts.””

“How?””

“He knew people.””

“What people?””

“People who could process documents.””

My father’s face changed.

“Forgery.””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I felt sick.

The trust.

The money.

The house.

All of it.

Not one mistake.

Not one bad decision.

A plan.

A real plan.

My father walked away from the table.

He looked out the window into the dark backyard.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

“I brought him into my life.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He turned around.

“You need to understand something.””

She looked at him.

“I can forgive mistakes.””

His voice broke slightly.

“But I cannot forgive choices that hurt my daughter.””

The room went quiet.

I looked down.

Because those words mattered.

More than I wanted to admit.

For years, I had wondered if my father noticed.

If he saw the things Vanessa did.

Now he was finally saying the words I needed to hear.

He saw.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

A text message.

My stomach tightened.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me open it.

One sentence.

*Ask your father why he never told you what happened the night your mother died.*

I froze.

The room disappeared.

The sound of my heartbeat filled my ears.

My father noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I looked at him.

I couldn’t speak.

He stepped closer.

“Maya?””

Slowly, I turned my phone around.

He read the message.

And everything changed.

His face went pale.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Dad?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at the phone.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

My father reached for the phone.

“Give it to me.””

I handed it over.

He looked at the number.

Then typed something.

No response.

The message was already gone from the screen except for the notification history.

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Daniel…”

He ignored her.

“Maya, go upstairs.””

“No.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Every time something happens, everyone tells me to leave the room.””

My voice shook.

“I’m done leaving the room.””

My father looked at me.

I continued.

“My whole life, adults have made decisions about my life while I stood outside the door.””

Nobody spoke.

“I want the truth.””

My father closed his eyes.

And for a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he whispered:

“You deserve it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He looked at her.

“I should have told her years ago.””

“Told me what?””

My father walked back to the table.

He sat down.

Then he said something I never expected to hear.

“Your mother’s death wasn’t just an accident.””

The air left my lungs.

I stared at him.

“What?””

My father looked at the old photograph on the table.

His voice became quieter.

“The night she died…”

He stopped.

Like saying the next words would change everything.

And then he looked directly at me.

“She was meeting someone.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

My father swallowed.

“Richard Hale.””

The name echoed through the room.

The man behind the betrayal.

The man who helped Vanessa.

The man connected to my mother’s final days.

May you like

And then my father said the one thing that made me realize the secrets were much deeper than money.

“Your mother found out he was trying to take control of your trust before she died.””
