Chapter 10: The Truth My Mother Wanted Me to Know
The words on the paper blurred in front of my eyes.
*The person who betrays us will be someone you love.*
I read it again.
Then again.
My fingers tightened around the small piece of paper.
My mother’s handwriting.
My mother’s warning.
But the question that followed was unbearable.
Who was she warning me about?
I slowly looked up.
My father was staring at me.
His face was unreadable.
Richard stood across from us, silent.
And Vanessa looked like she already knew what was coming.
“Maya,” my father said quietly.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because suddenly, I was afraid.
Not of Richard.
Not of Vanessa.
Of being wrong.
My whole life, my father had been the person I believed would protect me.
The person who stayed.
The person who loved me.
But my mother had written those words for a reason.
And she knew things I didn’t.
“It says…” My voice shook.
I stopped.
My father’s expression changed.
“Maya.””
I looked down at the paper.
Then back at him.
“It says I should trust you.””
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
A small moment of relief.
But I continued.
“And it says the person who betrays us will be someone I love.””
The relief disappeared.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard quietly said:
“She knew.””
My father turned toward him.
“You don’t get to speak about her.””
Richard accepted the anger.
“I deserve that.””
“You deserve much more.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Richard looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
“I made mistakes.””
My father laughed.
“Mistakes?””
Richard looked at him.
“I helped create a situation where innocent people were hurt.””
“That’s a convenient way to say it.””
Richard didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
I looked at him.
“Why did Mom trust you with this?””
His eyes moved toward me.
“Because your mother believed people could change.””
I almost smiled.
“That sounds like her.””
A sad expression crossed his face.
“Yes.””
Richard touched the edge of the desk.
“She believed I could fix what I had broken.””
My father stepped forward.
“What did you break?””
Richard looked down.
“The truth.””
Nobody moved.
He continued.
“Your mother discovered that I had been hiding financial problems in the company.””
My father’s face hardened.
“I knew you were stealing.””
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“I was covering something.””
“By moving money?””
“Yes.””
“By creating fake documents?””
“Yes.””
“By manipulating Vanessa?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty made the room colder.
My father stared at him.
“Why?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because I was desperate.””
I shook my head.
“People always say that.””
“I know.””
“And then they use it as an excuse.””
Richard nodded.
“You’re right.””
That was the first time I saw him without a mask.
Not a villain.
Not a victim.
A person who had made choices and regretted them.
“I thought I could solve the problem before anyone noticed.””
My father’s voice was bitter.
“You almost destroyed everything.””
“Yes.””
Richard looked at him.
“I know.””
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“And I helped him.””
Everyone turned.
She looked exhausted.
“I need to say it.””
My father didn’t respond.
“I was the person your mother warned you about.””
The words shocked me.
“Vanessa…”
She looked at me.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“She was right.””
My father shook his head.
“Then why didn’t you admit it?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
She looked at the floor.
“Every time I looked at Maya, I remembered what I had done.””
I felt a strange ache in my chest.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
She continued.
“Richard came to me because he knew I was vulnerable.””
Richard looked away.
“I told myself I was helping.””
“You weren’t.””
“I know.””
“You hurt her.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
My father’s voice softened slightly.
Not because he forgave her.
Because he was tired.
“What exactly happened that night?””
Richard took a breath.
“The night your mother died?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother discovered everything.””
My heart tightened.
“She knew about the money?””
“Yes.””
“The trust?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
My father closed his eyes.
Richard continued.
“She confronted me.””
“What happened?””
“She told me she would expose everything.””
“And then?””
Richard looked down.
“I begged her.””
The answer surprised me.
“You begged?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“A chance to fix it.””
The room went quiet.
“My mother gave you one?””
Richard nodded.
“She did.””
“Why?””
“Because she was your mother.””
The simple answer hurt.
Because it was true.
“She told me she wouldn’t destroy my life if I helped undo the damage.””
My father stared.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Because I was afraid.””
There it was again.
Fear.
The excuse that had destroyed everything.
“What happened after?””
Richard swallowed.
“Your mother left the meeting.””
“And?””
“I followed.””
My father stepped closer.
“You followed her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted the documents back.””
My stomach dropped.
“The documents?””
“The ones proving what happened.””
My father’s face changed.
“And the accident?””
Richard went silent.
That silence was enough.
“Richard.””
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t cause the crash.””
Nobody spoke.
“I swear.””
My father stared at him.
“Then what happened?””
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother’s car was tampered with.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
He nodded.
“I found out afterward.””
“Who did it?””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“No.””
Richard didn’t accuse her.
He just said:
“She knows.””
My father turned.
“Vanessa?””
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t do that.””
“I know.””
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“You didn’t.””
Everyone froze.
My father frowned.
“Then what does she know?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“The night before the accident…”
She stopped.
“Say it.””
She looked at me.
“I saw someone.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Your father.””
My entire body went still.
The room became silent.
I looked at my dad.
“No.””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad?””
His face was full of pain.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
He looked down.
And my heart shattered.
Not because he was guilty.
Because he looked like someone carrying something impossible.
“I found out after the accident.””
My breathing stopped.
“Found out what?””
“That your mother had planned to leave.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She was going to take you and leave the company.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed everyone around her had become dangerous.””
My father’s eyes filled.
“She thought I was one of them.””
The pain in his voice was real.
“I fought with her that night.””
I whispered:
“You fought?””
“Yes.””
“About the trust?””
“Yes.””
The room spun.
“But you didn’t hurt her?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I loved your mother.””
He looked at me.
“And I loved you.””
I wanted to believe him.
I did.
But there was still something missing.
“What happened after the argument?””
My father looked at the floor.
“I followed her.””
Everyone froze.
Richard closed his eyes.
“You saw him.””
My father looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell the truth?””
My father’s face broke.
“Because when I arrived…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“When I arrived, the car was already damaged.””
My hands covered my mouth.
“My mother…”
“She was alive.””
The words barely came out.
“She was alive when I found her.””
A tear slipped down his face.
“She held my hand.””
Nobody moved.
“She told me something.””
I whispered:
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“She told me to protect you.””
My heart broke.
“What else?””
He swallowed.
“She said there was someone we trusted who would try to take everything from you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Richard.
“Who?””
My father looked at the locket.
Then at me.
“We never found out.””
I stared.
“Never?””
“No.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Because the person who caused the accident covered everything.””
My father looked at him.
“And you know who?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?”” I asked.
Richard looked at me.
Then slowly turned toward the doorway.
A shadow moved.
Someone had been standing there.
Listening.
Waiting.
My father’s face changed.
Because he recognized the person.
The person who had followed us.
The person who knew where we were.
The person who had sent the messages.
Richard whispered:
“Your mother was right.””
The figure stepped into the light.
And my heart stopped.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone who had been part of our family for years.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had always claimed to protect me.
My father whispered the name.
“No…”
And the person smiled.
“I’m sorry, Maya.””
I stared.
Unable to move.
Because the final secret my mother left behind wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about the house.
It wasn’t about the trust.
It was about the person who had been closest to us all along.
The person who had spent ten years letting everyone else take the blame.
The person who had hidden the truth behind silence.
My father stepped in front of me.
But this time, I didn’t hide behind him.
I stepped forward.
Because I finally understood my mother’s message.
Protection wasn’t pretending the truth didn’t exist.
Protection was having the courage to face it.
And after ten years of secrets, lies, and stolen pieces of my life…
I was finally ready to hear everything.
The person standing in front of us looked at me and said:
“Your mother never wanted you to find out this way.””
I held the locket tightly.
And answered:
“She wanted me to find out the truth.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Because for the first time in my life…
Nobody could take that from me.
