Chapter 9: The Truth About the Night I Fell
The courtroom had never felt so quiet.
Not even when Richard’s forged documents were exposed.
Not even when the recording of his confession played through the speakers.
Not even when Chloe discovered that the man she loved had been lying to her.
This silence was different.
Because now the question wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about property.
It wasn’t about revenge.
It was about the night that changed my life.
The night I fell down the stairs.
The night Richard told me was my own fault.
The night I lost pieces of my memory.
For years, I had carried that uncertainty inside me.
Maybe I was careless.
Maybe I was distracted.
Maybe I had simply made a mistake.
Richard had repeated it so many times that eventually, I stopped fighting the possibility.
But now the journal sat in front of me.
And my grandmother’s final warning was clear.
*If Victoria helped Richard, then she knows the truth about what happened the night I fell.*
The judge looked at Daniel.
“Who is Victoria Lane?””
Daniel closed the journal carefully.
“Your Honor, Victoria Lane was Margaret Carter’s estate attorney for more than twenty years.””
“And her relationship with Richard Vance?””
Daniel looked toward Richard.
“That is what we need to establish.””
The judge turned.
“Mr. Vance?””
Richard remained silent.
That was becoming the most revealing thing about him.
A man who always had answers suddenly had none.
The judge’s voice hardened.
“I asked you a question.””
Richard finally looked up.
“Victoria was my attorney.””
A murmur spread through the room.
The judge narrowed his eyes.
“Your attorney?””
“Yes.””
“While she was also representing Margaret Carter?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“No, Your Honor.””
He placed another document on the table.
“She was not only representing Margaret Carter.””
He looked at me.
“She was also secretly advising Richard Vance.””
My hands tightened.
My grandmother trusted her.
Trusted her with everything.
Her estate.
Her secrets.
Her family.
And Victoria had used that trust against us.
The judge examined the document.
“When did this begin?””
Daniel replied.
“According to financial records, Victoria began consulting with Richard approximately one year before Emily’s wedding.””
My heart sank.
One year.
Richard had already been planning.
Before the engagement.
Before the wedding.
Before he told me he loved me.
The judge looked at Richard.
“Did you know Ms. Lane represented Mrs. Carter?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“And you did not disclose this to Emily?””
“No.””
The answer was quiet.
Almost impossible to hear.
But everyone heard it.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Richard didn’t look at me.
Because he couldn’t.
Because for once, he knew his eyes would reveal the truth.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Your Honor, we believe Victoria Lane was the person who provided Richard with confidential information about the Carter estate.””
Mr. Harrison stood.
“Objection. This is speculation.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then let’s examine the evidence.””
He pulled out another folder.
“After Margaret Carter’s death, Victoria transferred several documents from her law office to a private storage facility.””
The judge looked up.
“Why?””
Daniel answered.
“She claimed they were personal records.””
“And?””
“And those records included copies of Richard Vance’s financial plans.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Mr. Harrison immediately looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
Richard ignored him.
Daniel continued.
“The storage facility was accessed three times.””
The judge asked:
“By whom?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“Victoria Lane.””
A pause.
“Richard Vance.””
Another pause.
“And Chloe Bennett.””
The courtroom erupted.
Chloe looked horrified.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Chloe.””
She stared at him.
“You told me I was helping you organize documents.””
Richard said nothing.
“You told me it was just paperwork.””
Her voice cracked.
“You knew.””
I watched her.
And for the first time, I saw someone else experiencing the same thing I had.
The moment when the person you trusted most becomes a stranger.
The judge looked at Chloe.
“Ms. Bennett, did you access these records?””
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t know what they were.””
The judge remained expressionless.
“Did you access them?””
Chloe looked at Richard.
Then away.
“Yes.””
The courtroom went silent.
“But I didn’t know.””
Her voice became desperate.
“I swear I didn’t know.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why did Richard ask you to remove one specific file?””
Chloe froze.
“What?””
Daniel placed a document down.
“An email between you and Richard.””
Chloe stared.
“No.””
Daniel read:
“Find the folder with Emily’s medical records. Remove anything related to the accident.””
Richard stood.
“That’s fabricated.””
The judge immediately ordered him to sit.
Richard obeyed.
But his face had changed.
Because this was no longer a battle he could control.
Daniel turned toward Chloe.
“Did Richard ask you to find that folder?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Richard.
And something inside her broke.
“Because he said Emily was unstable.””
Her voice shook.
“He said the accident proved she wasn’t mentally capable of handling the family assets.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The final piece.
The lie he built my entire divorce around.
The lie that I was unstable.
The lie that I couldn’t trust myself.
The lie that he was protecting me.
The judge looked at Chloe.
“And did you remove the documents?””
Chloe shook her head.
“No.””
“Why not?””
She wiped her face.
“Because I found something else.””
Everyone waited.
“What?””
Chloe looked at me.
“I found a recording.””
My heart stopped.
Richard’s face went completely pale.
A real fear.
Not an act.
Not a performance.
“What recording?”” the judge asked.
Chloe reached into her bag.
Her hands were shaking.
She removed a small device.
“I kept it because I knew something was wrong.””
Richard whispered:
“Chloe.””
She looked at him.
“You lied to me.””
Then she handed the device to the clerk.
The courtroom became silent.
The recording began.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then voices.
Victoria.
And Richard.
My blood turned cold.
Victoria spoke first.
“She’s asking questions now.””
Richard answered.
“She won’t remember enough.””
A pause.
“She trusts me.””
Victoria sighed.
“Richard, this is becoming dangerous.””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“Dangerous was losing everything my family was owed.””
Victoria said something I couldn’t fully hear.
Then Richard answered.
“Emily is the only thing standing between me and what belongs to Nathan.””
My breath caught.
Nathan.
His son.
The recording continued.
Victoria asked:
“What if she remembers?””
Richard replied:
“Then we make sure she doesn’t.””
The courtroom froze.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because those words were not an accusation.
Not a theory.
Not a suspicion.
They were his voice.
His plan.
His truth.
The judge stopped the recording.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
He looked at Richard.
“Mr. Vance.””
Richard said nothing.
The judge continued.
“Did you know about this recording?””
No answer.
“Mr. Vance.””
Richard looked up.
And for the first time, he looked like the man underneath everything.
Not the businessman.
Not the husband.
Not the charming person everyone admired.
Just a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
The judge turned to Daniel.
“Is there more?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the journal.
“Yes, Your Honor.””
He opened to the final page.
“The journal contains Margaret Carter’s final entry.””
My heart pounded.
“What does it say?””
Daniel read silently.
Then his face changed.
The judge noticed.
“Read it.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Emily.””
“Just read it.””
He nodded.
The words came slowly.
*Emily, if you are reading this, then Richard has failed to silence the truth. But there is one thing you must know.*
Daniel stopped.
The courtroom waited.
He continued.
*Richard did not cause your accident alone.*
My entire body went cold.
Daniel looked up.
“The final page names another person.””
The judge leaned forward.
“Who?””
Daniel turned the journal toward himself.
His expression was full of disbelief.
Then he said the name.
A name I never expected.
A name that made Richard close his eyes.
Because he knew it was over.
The person who helped Richard destroy my life wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t Victoria.
It wasn’t Chloe.
It was the one person who had been defending him from the very beginning.
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Emily… it was your father.””
