Chapter 2: The Evidence He Buried Forever
The judge’s question hung in the air like a storm waiting to break.
“Where did you get that?””
For the first time since I entered the courtroom, Richard looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
And that was when I knew I had finally reached the one place he could not control.
The truth.
I buttoned my blouse slowly, refusing to rush.
Every eye in the room was on me.
The judge stared at the scar near my shoulder, then at Richard.
“Mr. Vance,” he said, his voice suddenly colder, “do you recognize this?””
Richard swallowed.
“I—”
He stopped.
That hesitation said more than any confession ever could.
His attorney immediately stood.
“Your Honor, I object. This appears to be an attempt at emotional manipulation.””
Daniel Brooks rose from our table.
“Your Honor, this is not emotional manipulation. This is physical evidence directly connected to the fraudulent documents submitted by the opposing party.””
Mr. Harrison frowned.
“Physical evidence of what?””
Daniel opened his folder.
“Of a hidden identity.””
A murmur spread through the courtroom.
Richard turned toward him.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer him.
Instead, he looked at the judge.
“Your Honor, before we discuss the assets, we need to discuss the woman my client was before she became Emily Vance.””
My heart pounded.
Not from fear.
From the memory of everything I had buried.
The courtroom disappeared for a moment.
I was no longer sitting beneath those bright lights.
I was twenty-six years old again.
Standing in a hospital hallway.
Alone.
Broken.
And trying to understand why the man who claimed to love me had disappeared.
But that was a story Richard had worked very hard to erase.
A story hidden behind a new name.
A new life.
And a carefully constructed lie.
The judge leaned forward.
“Explain.””
Daniel approached the bench with a document.
“Before marrying Richard Vance, my client was Emily Carter.””
Richard’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But everyone noticed.
Daniel continued.
“Eight years before this marriage, Emily Carter was involved in a serious accident. The injuries left her with permanent scarring. She underwent multiple surgeries and spent months recovering.””
Mr. Harrison crossed his arms.
“And what does that have to do with this divorce?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Everything.””
He placed the document down.
“Because during that period, Emily Carter discovered something about Richard Vance that he never wanted anyone to know.””
Richard’s chair scraped against the floor.
“Stop.””
The entire courtroom turned.
Richard immediately lowered his voice.
“I mean… this is irrelevant.””
But it wasn’t.
I watched him carefully.
For years, I had wondered if I would ever see that expression again.
The expression of a man who realized he had lost control.
Daniel continued.
“After the accident, Mrs. Vance discovered that several business documents connected to Richard’s previous company contained false information.””
Richard shook his head.
“This is ridiculous.””
Daniel ignored him.
“She found evidence that Richard had been moving company funds through shell accounts.””
Mr. Harrison stepped forward.
“Your Honor, these are unproven accusations.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
“That is why we brought proof.””
He removed another folder.
Inside were photographs.
Bank records.
Signed agreements.
And copies of documents that Richard thought had disappeared years ago.
The judge looked through them.
The silence became heavier with every page.
Richard leaned toward his attorney.
“This wasn’t supposed to exist.””
His whisper was quiet.
But not quiet enough.
Daniel heard him.
So did I.
So did the judge.
The judge lifted his eyes.
“Mr. Vance, would you like to explain that statement?””
Richard froze.
“I was referring to the fact that these documents are old.””
“Old documents do not usually cause someone to panic,” the judge replied.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
The confident businessman from the beginning of the hearing was disappearing piece by piece.
The man who had walked in holding Chloe’s hand.
The man who had promised I would leave with nothing.
The man who believed money could buy silence.
Now he looked like someone searching for an escape.
Chloe finally spoke.
“Richard?””
Her voice was different.
The confidence was gone.
She looked at him.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard glanced at her.
“Nothing.””
But Chloe didn’t look convinced.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Because Chloe wasn’t innocent.
She knew exactly what she was doing when she moved into my house.
She knew exactly whose necklace she was wearing.
She knew exactly how quickly Richard wanted to replace me.
But she didn’t know the one thing that mattered.
Richard never replaced people.
He used them.
Daniel turned another page.
“Your Honor, the plaintiff claims my client has a history of instability. However, we have evidence showing that Richard Vance deliberately created that narrative.””
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Vance, can you explain what happened after your accident?””
I took a breath.
The room became quiet.
“I woke up in the hospital and couldn’t remember everything.””
Richard looked down.
I continued.
“The doctors told me I had suffered trauma. I remembered pieces of my life, but not everything.””
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“And Richard was the person who told me what happened.””
The judge watched me.
“What did he tell you?””
I looked directly at Richard.
“He told me I had always been unstable.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“That’s not true.””
But his voice lacked strength.
“He told me I was lucky he stayed.””
I paused.
“He told me my family had abandoned me.””
The courtroom was silent.
“But the truth was different.””
I looked at the judge.
“My family had been trying to reach me.””
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“Phone records.””
The judge looked at them.
“Explain.””
Daniel nodded.
“After the accident, Richard blocked communication between Emily and her family. He told them she did not want contact.””
Richard immediately responded.
“That is absurd.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Then why did your personal assistant send an email stating, ‘Richard wants the family removed until Emily forgets the old life’?””
The color drained from Richard’s face.
Nobody spoke.
Not even his lawyers.
Because sometimes the most powerful evidence is not dramatic.
It is simple.
A sentence.
A message.
A mistake.
A moment when someone forgot that secrets leave fingerprints.
The judge looked at Richard.
“Did you write that instruction?””
Richard stared at the floor.
“No.””
“Did your assistant?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s interesting, because we have the assistant’s sworn statement.””
Richard looked up sharply.
“You can’t use her.””
There it was.
Another mistake.
Daniel noticed.
“So you do know who wrote it?””
Richard’s eyes widened.
He realized too late.
The courtroom remained silent.
The judge leaned back.
“Mr. Vance, I suggest you stop answering questions before they are asked.””
For the first time, Richard looked powerless.
But I knew him.
He wasn’t finished.
Men like Richard didn’t surrender.
They changed strategies.
And I saw it happen.
His eyes moved from the evidence.
To me.
Then to Chloe.
Then back to me.
Calculating.
Searching.
Trying to find a weakness.
Finally, he spoke.
“You’re acting like you’re some kind of hero.””
His voice was quieter now.
“You’re not.””
I stared at him.
“You spent years hiding behind that scar.””
He pointed toward my shoulder.
“You think showing it makes people believe you?””
A strange calm came over me.
Because that was Richard’s mistake.
He still thought the scar was my weakness.
He never understood it was proof that I survived him.
“You know what’s funny?”” I said.
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“For years, you told me nobody would believe me.””
I paused.
“But you were wrong.””
I looked around the courtroom.
“Because you believed yourself.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because he knew.
He knew the foundation he built was cracking.
The judge picked up the final document from Daniel’s folder.
Then his eyes stopped on the signature at the bottom.
His face became completely serious.
“Mrs. Vance.””
“Yes, Your Honor?””
“Is this your signature?””
I looked at the paper.
The same signature Richard had used to transfer everything away from me.
The same signature he claimed proved I had willingly surrendered my rights.
I shook my head.
“No.””
The judge studied the page.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes.””
“Then whose signature is this?””
I looked at Richard.
He looked back at me.
And for the first time in years, he looked like he wanted to run.
I smiled faintly.
“Your Honor…”
I turned the page over.
“Before today, I thought Richard’s biggest mistake was stealing my money.””
I let the silence grow.
“But I was wrong.””
The judge looked at the back of the document.
And his expression changed.
Because hidden beneath the forged signature was a small detail Richard never noticed.
A detail that connected him to every crime he had committed.
May you like
A detail that would reveal who had helped him.
And when the judge read the name written there, he immediately ordered the courtroom doors locked.
