Chapter 6: The Journal That Could Destroy Him

The message remained on my screen.

Five words.

That was all.

*I found your grandmother’s journal.*

For a moment, the courtroom disappeared.

The voices around me became distant.

The judge’s questions.

The attorneys arguing.

Richard’s angry whispers.

None of it mattered.

Because there was only one thing in the world that could explain why someone had contacted me at that exact moment.

The journal.

My grandmother’s journal.

The one Richard had searched for.

The one he believed no longer existed.

The one thing that could reveal everything he had spent years hiding.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“Emily?””

I looked at him and handed him my phone.

He read the message.

His face changed.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

“You’re sure this number is unknown?””

I nodded.

“I’ve never seen it before.””

Daniel looked toward Richard.

And I followed his eyes.

Richard was watching us.

He knew something had happened.

He didn’t know what.

But he knew.

That was the dangerous thing about Richard.

He could read people.

He could sense when control was slipping away.

He leaned toward his attorney and whispered something.

Mr. Harrison immediately looked uncomfortable.

Then Richard stood.

“Your Honor, I request a brief recess.””

The judge looked annoyed.

“We have already spent considerable time reviewing your submitted evidence.””

“I understand.””

Richard’s voice was controlled again.

Almost.

“But new information appears to have been introduced.””

The judge looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

“Mrs. Vance?””

Daniel stood.

“Your Honor, we have no objection to a short recess.””

The judge nodded.

“We will take fifteen minutes.””

The courtroom began moving.

People stood.

Papers shuffled.

Attorneys gathered their files.

But Richard didn’t leave.

He stayed exactly where he was.

Watching me.

Waiting for the moment he could approach.

I knew he would.

He always did.

Richard never confronted people when others were watching.

He preferred private conversations.

Private threats.

Private moments where he could make you doubt yourself.

I stepped into the hallway with Daniel.

Within seconds, Richard appeared.

“Emily.””

I didn’t turn.

“Not now, Richard.””

His footsteps stopped.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I slowly faced him.

The old version of me would have looked away.

The old version of me would have searched his face for the man I loved.

Not anymore.

“What does that mean?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“It means you’re playing with things you don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

“That sounds familiar.””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

He stepped closer.

“Who contacted you?””

There it was.

The question he was desperate to ask.

Not “Are you okay?””

Not “What did they send you?””

Not even “Is someone threatening you?””

Just:

Who contacted you?

Because Richard didn’t care about my safety.

He cared about his secrets.

I slipped my phone back into my bag.

“Why does it matter?””

His expression hardened.

“Because if you found that journal, you need to know something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

A small hesitation.

But enough.

“Your grandmother wasn’t the person you think she was.””

I stared at him.

After everything he had done, he still believed he could manipulate me.

“You’re really going to attack my grandmother now?””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

The words were almost funny.

Protect me.

Richard had used that word for years.

Every time he wanted to control me.

Every time he wanted me to surrender.

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””

His face changed.

For a moment, I saw the anger underneath.

Then he forced it away.

“Emily, listen carefully.””

His voice dropped.

“If that journal exists, there are things inside it that could hurt you too.””

I studied him.

“What are you afraid I’ll find?””

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Then he said:

“Things are not always what they seem.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“They’re exactly what they seem. I just refused to believe it.””

Before he could answer, Daniel called my name.

“Emily.””

I walked away.

But Richard’s words followed me.

Not because I believed him.

Because I knew him.

And when Richard warned someone about the truth, it usually meant the truth was closer than ever.

The person who sent the message asked me to meet them after the hearing.

A small café two blocks from the courthouse.

Daniel wanted to come.

I refused.

Not because I didn’t trust him.

Because whoever had the journal specifically asked for me.

Alone.

The café was nearly empty when I arrived.

Rain tapped against the windows.

The smell of coffee filled the room.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something close to normal.

Then I saw him.

An older man sitting in the corner.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

A worn leather folder resting beside him.

He stood when he saw me.

“Emily Carter?””

Nobody had called me that in years.

I froze.

“Yes.””

He looked relieved.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

The name sounded familiar.

But I couldn’t place it.

He noticed.

“You wouldn’t remember me.””

“Why?””

He sat down slowly.

“Because Richard made sure you wouldn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

I sat across from him.

“You have my grandmother’s journal?””

He looked at the folder.

“Yes.””

“Where did you find it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened the folder.

Inside was an old leather-bound book.

The cover was scratched.

The edges were worn.

But I knew it instantly.

My grandmother’s handwriting was visible on the first page.

My breath caught.

I reached toward it.

Then stopped.

Almost afraid to touch it.

Thomas watched me.

“Your grandmother gave this to me before she died.””

I looked up.

“She knew you?””

He nodded.

“She knew you were in danger.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the window.

“Margaret Carter was not naive. She knew Richard was interested in her assets.””

I felt a lump in my throat.

“But she never told me.””

“She tried.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Thomas opened the journal.

Then he turned it toward me.

There was a page marked with a small ribbon.

I read the first line.

*If Emily ever reads this, it means Richard has already taken control of the story.*

My hands began shaking.

Thomas continued.

“Your grandmother suspected he would manipulate you.””

I looked at the words.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My grandmother.

The woman who taught me to bake.

The woman who held my hand when I cried.

The woman who always told me to trust my instincts.

She knew.

She knew Richard was dangerous.

And she tried to warn me.

I turned the page.

The next entry was dated three months before my wedding.

*Richard Vance is intelligent. Charming. Patient. Those qualities make him dangerous.*

My eyes burned.

I kept reading.

*Emily sees the kindness he wants her to see. I see the questions he asks when he thinks nobody notices.*

I looked at Thomas.

“How did you know my grandmother?””

He looked down.

“Because I was the one who helped her investigate Richard.””

The words hit me.

“You investigated him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because Richard Vance had a history.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What history?””

Thomas looked at the journal.

“The kind of history that explains why he was so determined to marry you.””

I waited.

He opened another page.

A newspaper clipping was attached.

A young Richard.

A young Vanessa Bell.

And another person.

Someone I had never seen.

Thomas pointed.

“Before Richard met you, he was involved in another family.””

I looked closer.

The photograph showed Richard standing beside Vanessa.

And beside them was a young man.

A young man with Richard’s eyes.

My heart stopped.

“Who is that?””

Thomas looked at me.

“That is Richard’s son.””

The world went quiet.

“Richard has a son?””

Thomas nodded.

“And that son is the reason your grandmother feared him.””

I stared at the photograph.

A son.

A secret family.

Another life.

Another lie.

Thomas turned another page.

“This is what your grandmother discovered.””

I looked down.

There was a name written in bold.

*Nathan Vance.*

Underneath it was a note from my grandmother.

*Richard did not marry Emily for her inheritance.*

My heart pounded.

Because I thought I already knew the truth.

But I didn’t.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*He married Emily because he believed Nathan’s future depended on controlling the Carter estate.*

I looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then slowly stand.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he looked at me.

“Richard knows you have the journal.””

My blood froze.

“How?””

Thomas grabbed the folder.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

He looked toward the café entrance.

Because standing outside in the rain was a familiar figure.

Richard’s private investigator.

Watching us.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because Richard never wanted the journal found.””

The man outside reached for the café door.

And Thomas whispered the words that made my entire body go cold.

“Emily, your grandmother didn’t just write down Richard’s crimes.””

May you like

He looked at the journal.

“She wrote down the name of the person who helped him commit them.””
