Chapter 9: The Letter From The Past
Daniel spent the entire night searching through old memories.
Old photos.
Old documents.
Anything connected to Claire and his late wife, Emily.
And then he found it.
A letter.
Hidden inside an old box of Emily’s belongings.
His hands shook before he opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
Emily.
His wife.
The woman he had loved.
The letter was addressed to Claire.
Daniel read slowly.
“Claire,
I hope one day you understand that anger will not heal what happened.””
He stopped.
What happened?
He kept reading.
“I know you blame me, but I never wanted to hurt you.””
Daniel sat down.
Because suddenly Claire’s hatred made sense.
Not justified.
But understandable.
There was history.
A painful history.
When Daniel showed Detective Harris the letter, the detective studied it carefully.
“So Claire and Emily knew each other.””
“Yes.””
“Do you know why?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
The detective looked at him.
“You may need to ask Claire.””
Daniel looked away.
The thought of seeing his sister again made his stomach turn.
But he needed answers.
Claire agreed to meet.
Not in anger.
Not with threats.
Just silence.
When Daniel sat across from her, she looked different.
Smaller.
Older.
“I knew you’d find out eventually,” she said.
Daniel stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew you would choose her.””
“Emily is dead.””
Claire looked down.
“And you still choose her.””
Daniel frowned.
“What happened between you two?””
Claire was quiet.
Then she finally spoke.
“Emily was my best friend.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“We were close before you met her.””
“Then why?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because I lost everything.””
She explained.
A betrayal.
A misunderstanding.
Years of resentment.
But nothing changed what happened afterward.
Nothing excused hurting children.
Daniel listened.
Then said the words he needed to say.
“I understand your pain.””
Claire looked up.
“But?””
“But you took your pain out on innocent people.””
Silence.
For once, Claire had no defense.
Before Daniel left, Claire stopped him.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“Marcus is lying.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“He never cared about me.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“He used my anger.””
Daniel stared.
“Why tell me now?””
Claire whispered:
“Because he’s going after the one thing he always wanted.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What?””
May you like
Claire looked terrified.
“Your children.””
