Chapter 3: What Was Hidden Under The Bed

Daniel waited until midnight.

He hated that he waited.

A part of him wanted to confront Claire immediately.

He wanted answers.

He wanted to demand how she could look his children in the eyes after everything.

But another part of him knew something important.

Noah had been afraid.

And scared children did not need adults making emotional decisions.

They needed adults who listened.

So Daniel waited.

When the house finally went quiet, he walked upstairs.

Claire’s bedroom door was closed.

He stood there for a long moment.

Then he remembered Noah’s words.

Look under Aunt Claire’s bed.

He opened the door carefully.

The room smelled like perfume.

Everything was organized.

Too organized.

He knelt down.

Under the bed were several boxes.

At first, he saw nothing unusual.

Old clothes.

Books.

Documents.

Then he found a small plastic bag.

Inside were papers.

Daniel pulled them out.

The first page was a printed message.

His heart started beating faster.

It was from a conversation between Claire and someone named Marcus.

Daniel read it.

Then his face went pale.

“Why are you still staying there?””

“I need time. Daniel trusts me.””

Another message.

“He thinks I’m helping with the kids.””

Another.

“The house will be easier once he stops looking.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

He kept reading.

The messages were months old.

Before Claire moved in.

Before she offered help.

Before he ever suspected anything.

She hadn’t come because she loved her brother.

She had come because she wanted something.

But what?

A floorboard creaked.

Daniel turned.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Watching him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Claire smiled.

Not a kind smile.

A cold one.

“You shouldn’t go through people’s things.””

Daniel slowly stood.

“You were planning something.””

“No.””

“I saw the messages.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

Claire stepped closer.

“You’re tired. You’re grieving. You’re letting a child’s imagination destroy your family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You think this is about Noah?””

“Yes.””

She pointed downstairs.

“An eight-year-old boy who wants attention.””

The anger inside Daniel became almost impossible to control.

“Don’t talk about my son like that.””

Claire laughed.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You’ve always been weak when it comes to them.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because they’re my children?””

“Because you let them control you.””

The words landed heavily.

Daniel realized something.

Claire didn’t love his children.

She didn’t even understand them.

She saw them as obstacles.

The next morning, Daniel picked Noah and Lily up from school.

He didn’t mention Claire.

He didn’t mention the messages.

He just watched them.

The way Noah held Lily’s hand.

The way Lily stayed close to her brother.

The way Noah looked over his shoulder every few minutes.

That night, Daniel made dinner.

A simple meal.

Pasta.

Bread.

Something normal.

He wanted his children to feel safe.

After dinner, Noah sat beside him.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you angry?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“At you?””

Noah shook his head.

“At Aunt Claire.””

Daniel paused.

“No.””

Noah looked down.

“She said you would be.””

Daniel’s heart hurt.

“What else did she say?””

The boy hesitated.

“She said nobody would believe me.””

Daniel pulled him closer.

“I believe you.””

Noah’s eyes filled.

“I tried to tell you before.””

Daniel froze.

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Noah whispered:

“Because every time I started talking, she would smile.””

Daniel frowned.

“She would smile?””

“Yeah.””

A tear rolled down Noah’s cheek.

“She would make me feel like I was doing something wrong.””

Daniel held his son tighter.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“This is Detective Harris.””

Daniel stood.

“Why is the police calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“We need to talk about your sister.””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“What happened?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“We found something connected to Claire’s name.””

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

May you like

The answer came quietly.

“Your sister isn’t who you think she is.””
