Chapter 9: The Truth My Family Buried
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not Daniel.
Not my mother.
Not me.
The photograph sat on the table between us like a weapon.
My father.
Gavin.
Brenda.
A file folder.
A secret.
I stared at the image until my eyes burned.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like I was trying to convince myself.
“No, that’s not possible.””
My mother looked at me.
“Nora…”
“Dad wouldn’t.””
My voice became stronger.
“He wouldn’t be involved in something like this.””
Daniel didn’t say anything.
That scared me more than if he had argued.
Because Daniel had always defended people when he believed they deserved it.
But he wasn’t defending my father.
I picked up the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
Daniel looked at it.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I found it with Ethan’s things.””
I looked at him.
“Then how do you know it’s real?””
“Because Ethan kept it hidden.””
I stared at the photo again.
Ethan.
Even after all these years, he was still leaving pieces behind.
Still trying to protect me.
My chest tightened.
“What was Ethan investigating?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“He believed Gavin’s divorce wasn’t about Brenda.””
I already knew that part.
“Then what was it about?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Gavin’s company.””
I remembered.
Albright Development.
A successful real estate company.
The thing Gavin talked about constantly.
The thing he always said was his future.
Daniel continued.
“Before the divorce, Gavin was facing problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
“Financial ones.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“Nora.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Gavin had money.””
“He looked like he had money.””
The distinction hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like him.
Everything about Gavin had always been polished.
His clothes.
His car.
His confidence.
But underneath?
Maybe there had always been cracks.
“Ethan found evidence that Gavin was hiding losses,” Daniel said.
“And Brenda?””
“She wasn’t just his affair partner.””
I looked at him.
“What was she?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She worked for the company.””
The room went silent.
I remembered Brenda sitting in my kitchen.
The way comfortable she looked.
The way she acted like she belonged there.
I had always thought she wanted my husband.
But maybe she wanted something else too.
“Why would they need me gone?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Because you knew too much.””
I laughed softly.
“I didn’t know anything.””
“You were married to him.””
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“It meant you had access.””
My stomach tightened.
“What access?””
“Financial records. Documents. Accounts.””
I stared at him.
“I wasn’t involved in his business.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“But Gavin trusted you.””
That hurt.
Because once, he had.
Before everything changed.
Before he decided I was a problem instead of a partner.
I found my father two hours later.
He was sitting alone in the hotel bar.
Exactly where I expected him to be.
My father was always someone who looked calm during chaos.
A skill I used to admire.
Now I wondered if it was something else.
I walked toward him.
He looked up.
And immediately knew.
“Nora.””
I placed the photograph on the table.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You know what this is.””
He looked at the photo.
Then back at me.
“Where did you get that?””
Not denial.
Not confusion.
A question.
“You knew.””
He sighed.
“Nora.””
“You knew about Ethan.””
His expression hardened.
“I knew he was involved.””
“Involved?””
My voice shook.
“He saved my life.””
My father looked away.
“And then he died.””
“Yes.””
“Do you know how?””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Do you?””
My father didn’t answer.
And suddenly, I felt like I was looking at a stranger.
Not the man who taught me how to ride a bike.
Not the man who held my hand when I was afraid.
A stranger.
“You were there.””
His eyes lifted.
“What?””
“You were there when Ethan died.””
The color left his face.
“How did you—”
“Because you just answered the question.””
My father closed his eyes.
For the first time in my life, I saw him scared.
“Tell me the truth.””
“Nora.””
“Tell me.””
The bar was quiet.
A few people sat in the distance.
Nobody noticed the destruction happening at our table.
My father whispered:
“I was trying to help you.””
I almost smiled.
Another person.
Another excuse.
“You all love saying that.””
He looked hurt.
“I made mistakes.””
“Yes.””
My voice broke.
“You did.””
He lowered his head.
“Gavin came to me.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
“Before the divorce.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew you were pregnant.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“He knew?””
My father nodded.
“He suspected.””
“Then why?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
My father looked at me.
“Losing everything.””
I felt sick.
“Everything?””
“He was trying to protect his company.””
“So he left me?””
“He thought he could control the situation.””
I stared at him.
“And Brenda?””
My father didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“They planned it.””
My father looked away.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
I felt like the air disappeared.
“Gavin and Brenda planned to leave me?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
My voice rose.
“You knew my husband was destroying my life and you did nothing?””
“I was trying to find proof.””
“While I was falling apart?””
My father’s eyes filled.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could control it.””
He looked down.
Because he knew I was right.
“Ethan found out.””
“Yes.””
“He found the proof.””
“Yes.””
“And then he died.””
My father was silent.
The silence was unbearable.
“Dad.””
His eyes closed.
“Ethan wasn’t supposed to be there.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“Gavin knew Ethan was investigating.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And?””
“And he tried to scare him.””
My hands went numb.
“Scare him?””
My father swallowed.
“The night of the accident…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Gavin’s car was behind Ethan’s.””
I couldn’t speak.
“No.””
“I don’t know exactly what happened.””
“But you know enough.””
“Yes.””
My father looked broken.
“I know enough.””
That night, I found Gavin.
He was standing outside the hotel near the water.
Alone.
For once.
No Brenda.
No audience.
No performance.
Just him.
He heard my footsteps.
“Nora.””
I stopped.
“Did you know?””
His face changed.
“Know what?””
I laughed.
“You still do that.””
“Do what?””
“Pretend.””
The wind moved between us.
“Did you know Ethan was investigating you?””
Gavin went still.
That was my answer.
“You knew.””
“Nora—”
“You knew.””
He looked away.
“Where did you hear that?””
“From your face.””
His jaw tightened.
“I didn’t kill him.””
The words came too quickly.
I froze.
“I never said you did.””
Silence.
Gavin realized his mistake.
His expression changed.
“I…”
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He looked toward the water.
“I knew he was asking questions.””
“Why?””
“Because he was trying to destroy me.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“He was trying to expose you.””
Gavin looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw the truth.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked away.
“Nora, if everything comes out…”
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“You won’t just hate me.””
I waited.
“You’ll understand why I had to leave.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Had to?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then he whispered:
“Because the child you were carrying wasn’t the only secret.””
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?””
Gavin stepped closer.
And before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed completely.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Where is she?””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
Fear returned to his face.
“It’s Lily.””
The world stopped.
“What about Lily?””
Gavin looked at the phone.
May you like
Then at me.
“She’s gone.””
