Chapter 6: The Child Nobody Spoke About
“There was another baby.””
My mother’s words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They floated between us like a sentence from someone else’s life.
Another baby.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked away.
“Nora…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Say something that destroys everything and then act like you’re afraid of my reaction.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“Another baby?””
My voice cracked.
“Are you saying Brenda had a baby?””
My mother nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I felt a strange emptiness spread through me.
Not anger.
Not even shock.
Something colder.
A realization that the life I thought I understood had been built on missing pieces.
“When?””
My mother swallowed.
“About four months after your divorce was finalized.””
I laughed once.
A small, broken sound.
“So while I was learning how to survive losing my marriage…”
I looked at her.
“Gavin was starting another family?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t have to.
I stood there, trying to understand how one person could exist in so many different versions.
The Gavin I loved.
The Gavin who left me.
The Gavin who apparently had another child.
And now the Gavin who had just discovered Lily existed.
“Does he know?””
My mother looked confused.
“Know what?””
“About Lily.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Does Gavin know about the other baby?””
Silence.
That was all I needed.
“He doesn’t.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“No.””
The room felt smaller.
“How?””
She sat down.
“Nora, it’s complicated.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“It’s not.””
My voice grew stronger.
“It’s actually very simple.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You all made choices.””
My mother looked hurt.
“We were trying to protect you.””
“Stop saying that.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I meant them.
“Protection doesn’t mean deciding someone else’s entire life.””
My mother looked down.
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
And somehow that made it worse.
“Who else knows?””
She hesitated.
I already knew the answer would hurt.
“Daniel.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Daniel.
The one person I trusted.
The one person who had always been honest with me.
Or so I thought.
“Does he know about Brenda’s baby?””
“Yes.””
I opened my eyes.
“And he never told me?””
My mother looked away.
“He thought it wasn’t his place.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had decided what I could handle.
Except me.
The person whose life it actually was.
I found Daniel near the hotel pool.
Lily was sitting beside him, coloring in a small notebook.
The second she saw me, she smiled.
“Mom!””
That word usually warmed my heart.
But today it hurt.
Because I was suddenly thinking about all the people who had protected her while hiding things from me.
I forced a smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She held up her drawing.
“It’s our family.””
I looked down.
My breath caught.
There were four figures.
A tall man.
A woman.
A little girl.
And another figure beside them.
“Who’s this?”” I asked.
Lily looked surprised.
“That’s Dad.””
My heart tightened.
Daniel.
Not Gavin.
Daniel.
“And this?””
She pointed to the other figure.
“That’s you.””
I smiled.
Then she pointed to the sky.
“And that’s the star that watches us.””
I swallowed.
“Who told you that?””
“Grandma.””
My mother.
Of course.
Lily went back to coloring.
I looked at Daniel.
“We need to talk.””
He saw my expression.
Immediately.
He stood.
“Lily, stay with Aunt Emily for a minute, okay?””
She nodded.
“Okay.””
She ran toward the lobby.
The moment she was gone, I turned.
“You knew.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Knew what?””
“Don’t.””
My voice stopped him.
“Not today.””
He sighed.
“Nora.””
“You knew Brenda had another baby.””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then he nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“Why?””
“I told you.””
“No.””
I turned back.
“You told me you didn’t want to hurt me.””
His expression softened.
“I didn’t.””
“But you let me live in a lie.””
“I thought knowing would destroy you.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice dropped.
“Because everyone seems to.””
Daniel looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I believed him.
That was the problem.
Daniel wasn’t like Gavin.
He didn’t lie because he wanted something.
He lied because he thought he was helping.
But pain didn’t care about intentions.
“You knew Gavin had another child.””
“Yes.””
“And you never thought I deserved to know?””
“I thought you deserved peace.””
I looked at him.
“Peace built on secrets isn’t peace.””
He had no answer.
That evening, Gavin called.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
There was silence.
Then:
“Nora.””
His voice was low.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“You already said that.””
“This is different.””
I looked out at the hotel lights reflecting over the water.
“What happened?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I talked to my mother.””
My entire body went still.
“Your mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Knew what?””
“She knew about Lily.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
His voice changed.
“I went through some old documents.””
That worried me.
“What documents?””
“Divorce papers.””
I said nothing.
“Nora, there was something missing.””
“What?””
“Your pregnancy information.””
The air left my lungs.
“What?””
“I found out there should have been records.””
I froze.
Because I remembered.
The hospital.
The forms.
The paperwork.
The night Lily was born.
Something about Gavin’s voice made me uneasy.
“What are you saying?””
He answered quietly.
“I think someone erased my name.””
My stomach twisted.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I didn’t respond.
Because suddenly, I remembered something.
The hospital room.
My mother arguing with someone outside.
The nurse looking uncomfortable.
The folder she handed me afterward.
I had been too exhausted to question anything.
Too overwhelmed.
Too focused on my baby.
“I need to see you,” Gavin said.
“No.””
“Nora.””
“I said no.””
“Please.””
That word surprised me.
Gavin didn’t say please.
Not to me.
Not ever.
“I found something else.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“A document.””
“What document?””
“A paternity form.””
My heart stopped.
“And?””
“And my name isn’t on it.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because that was impossible.
Gavin was Lily’s biological father.
I knew.
Daniel knew.
My mother knew.
So why would a document say otherwise?
Then Gavin said the sentence that changed everything.
“Nora…”
His voice shook.
“The man listed as Lily’s father…”
A pause.
“He isn’t Daniel.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“I checked the record twice.””
“No.””
“It says Lily’s father is someone else.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then:
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””
My mind raced.
Someone else.
Not Gavin.
Not Daniel.
Another man.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Then Gavin whispered:
“And Nora…”
“What?””
“I think someone knew this all along.””
The call ended.
I stood alone in the hotel hallway.
And for the first time since Lily was born…
I wondered if I had been protecting the wrong truth.
May you like
Because the biggest secret wasn’t why Gavin never knew about his daughter.
The biggest secret was whether Lily had ever been his daughter at all.
