Chapter 9: The Video That Revealed Everything

Marcus drove home faster than he ever had before.

Not because he was afraid of Ethan.

Not anymore.

He was afraid of what would happen if he arrived too late.

Because Ethan had spent years controlling the truth.

And now he had something else.

A video.

Proof.

Or another weapon.

Marcus didn’t know which.

When he pulled into the driveway, he saw Ethan’s car parked outside.

For a moment, he sat behind the wheel.

He remembered the man who had once been his closest friend.

The man who had helped him celebrate his first business contract.

The man who had held Caleb as a baby.

The man who had smiled at family dinners while carrying secrets that could destroy everything.

Marcus stepped out.

The front door was unlocked.

That bothered him.

Ethan wanted him to walk in.

He wanted an audience.

Marcus entered.

The living room was empty.

Then he heard voices.

From the kitchen.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Vanessa.

Her voice was shaking.

Marcus moved closer.

Ethan answered calmly.

“You say that every time you get scared.””

“You killed my sister.””

The words stopped Marcus.

The room went silent.

Then Ethan laughed.

A quiet, almost amused sound.

“You still believe that?””

Marcus stepped into the doorway.

“No.””

Both of them turned.

Ethan looked surprised for only a second.

Then he smiled.

“Marcus.””

There was no fear.

No guilt.

Just confidence.

Like he had been waiting.

“Leave.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“She told you.””

Marcus walked into the room.

“She told me enough.””

“Did she?””

Ethan smiled.

“That’s the problem with Vanessa.””

He looked at her.

“She always tells the truth halfway.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about truth.””

Ethan ignored her.

“Marcus, you want to know what happened?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to understand something.””

He stepped closer.

“Everyone in this room lied.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“You included.””

Ethan smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The part where you pretend you’re different.””

Marcus stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan reached into his jacket.

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

“What are you doing?””

Ethan pulled out a small drive.

“A gift.””

He placed it on the table.

“The video.””

Marcus looked at it.

“Where did you get this?””

Ethan laughed softly.

“I made it.””

The answer made the room colder.

“You recorded it?””

“I recorded everything.””

“Why?””

“Because people always forget what they said.””

Marcus stared at him.

“You planned this.””

Ethan smiled.

“Of course.””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“You kept a recording?””

“I kept insurance.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

And he understood.

She had known.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You knew he recorded things.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt endless.

Marcus looked back at Ethan.

“Play it.””

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

“You sure?””

“Yes.””

“Because once you see it, there’s no going back.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“There hasn’t been a way back for a long time.””

Ethan connected the drive to the television.

The screen flickered.

Then the video began.

A dark road.

Rain.

A car parked near the trees.

Marcus watched silently.

Then he saw them.

Ethan.

Lydia.

Vanessa.

The date appeared in the corner.

Eight years earlier.

The night Lydia died.

Lydia stood with her arms crossed.

“You need to stop.””

Ethan laughed.

“You sound like Marcus.””

“Maybe Marcus is smarter than you think.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

Lydia stepped closer.

“I know what you did.””

“You know nothing.””

“I know about the accounts.””

A pause.

“I know about the money.””

Ethan looked angry.

“And I know about Vanessa.””

Vanessa on the video looked terrified.

“Lydia…”

“No.””

Lydia turned toward her.

“You need to tell him.””

Vanessa cried.

“I can’t.””

“Yes, you can.””

“I’ll lose everything.””

Lydia looked at her.

“You already did.””

The video paused for a second.

Marcus felt Vanessa beside him shaking.

Then the recording continued.

Ethan moved closer to Lydia.

“You think Marcus will believe you?””

“Yes.””

“No, he won’t.””

Lydia frowned.

“You don’t know him.””

Ethan smiled.

“I know him better than you do.””

The words hit Marcus.

Because they sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Ethan continued.

“He trusts people who make him feel needed.””

Lydia looked disgusted.

“You’re sick.””

Then Ethan said something that made Marcus freeze.

“You should ask Marcus what happened eight years ago.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan smiled.

“Tell her, Marcus.””

The video suddenly shifted.

A different angle.

A different recording.

And Marcus saw himself.

His own voice.

From eight years earlier.

His blood went cold.

He had forgotten this.

He was standing in a hospital hallway.

Speaking to Ethan.

“I can’t lose my family.””

Ethan’s voice answered.

“You won’t.””

Marcus on the video looked broken.

“I don’t know what to do.””

“You trust me, right?””

A pause.

Then his younger self said:

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped back.

The room spun.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What is it?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because he remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

Eight years earlier, after learning about Ethan’s involvement with Vanessa, Marcus had confronted him.

But Ethan had manipulated him.

He had convinced Marcus that the truth would destroy their family.

That Vanessa was unstable.

That Caleb would lose his father.

That Nia would lose her home.

And Marcus…

Marcus had chosen silence.

Not because he knew the truth.

Because he was afraid.

The video continued.

Ethan’s younger voice said:

“You need to forget what happened tonight.””

Marcus’s voice answered:

“I don’t want to.””

“You do if you want your family.””

The video ended.

Silence.

No one spoke.

Then Ethan smiled.

“Now you understand.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was shocking.

“You made me hide it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan sat down.

“Because I needed someone respectable.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“You.””

Ethan smiled.

“People believe the man everyone trusts.””

The words were disgusting.

But Marcus understood.

Ethan hadn’t just hidden behind Vanessa.

He had hidden behind Marcus.

His reputation.

His kindness.

His silence.

Then Marcus noticed something.

The video wasn’t complete.

There was a missing section.

“Where is the rest?””

Ethan’s smile disappeared slightly.

“What?””

“The video cuts.””

A pause.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You edited it.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You don’t know what happened after this.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“But you do.””

Vanessa looked between them.

“Ethan.””

For the first time, Ethan looked nervous.

Marcus saw it.

The smallest crack.

And he knew.

The video wasn’t his victory.

It was a mistake.

“You didn’t bring this here to prove I lied.””

Ethan stared.

“You brought this here because you thought I would break.””

Marcus picked up the drive.

“But you forgot something.””

“What?””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Toward his children.

“I’m not the only person you hurt.””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“You think you can stop me?””

Marcus looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I think Lydia already did.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus held up his phone.

Because while Ethan had been talking, Marcus had sent the video file to Claire.

And she had replied.

One sentence.

*“I found the missing footage.””*

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“You weren’t afraid of the video.””

Ethan went still.

“You were afraid of what came after it.””

For the first time all night, Ethan looked uncertain.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

Claire.

He answered.

“Marcus.””

Her voice was urgent.

“I found the missing part.””

Everyone listened.

Claire continued.

“And you need to hear this.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“What is it?””

A pause.

Then Claire said:

“The person who caused the accident wasn’t Ethan.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus felt the room disappear.

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“It was someone who arrived after you left.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then Ethan.

“Who?””

The answer came.

And it changed everything.

“It was someone from your family.””

The call went silent.

May you like

And upstairs…

A bedroom door slowly opened.
