Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Came With Answers

Marcus stood in the kitchen, holding the phone against his ear.

For a moment, he couldn’t speak.

The name kept repeating in his mind.

*Claire Hart.*

Lydia’s daughter.

A person who should have been part of his life.

A person he had never heard about.

A person Vanessa had erased.

“Marcus?”” the woman asked.

Her voice trembled.

“Are you still there?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

That scared him more than anything.

“Yes,” Marcus finally said.

The woman released a shaky breath.

“I wasn’t sure you would answer.””

“How did you get my number?””

“Your name was on my mother’s documents.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Documents?””

“Yes.””

“What documents?””

There was a pause.

“My mother kept everything.””

The way Claire said it made his stomach tighten.

“Everything about what?””

“About Vanessa. About Ethan. About what happened.””

Marcus turned away from Vanessa.

“Where are you?””

“I’m in town.””

“Can we meet?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Today.””

Marcus looked at the clock.

“Where?””

Claire gave him an address.

A small coffee shop near the old train station.

Then, before hanging up, she said:

“Marcus?””

“Yeah?””

“My mother wanted you to know something.””

He waited.

“She never stopped trying to tell you the truth.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, Marcus remained still.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Don’t go.””

He slowly turned.

The words surprised him.

Not because she said them.

Because of how desperate she sounded.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what she wants.””

Marcus stared at her.

“She’s your niece.””

“She’s Lydia’s daughter.””

“That’s what you just said.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Marcus replied quietly.

“I don’t.””

He picked up his jacket.

“And that’s because for years, you made sure I didn’t.””

The coffee shop was almost empty.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Marcus sat in the corner, waiting.

Every person who entered made him look up.

Then finally, a young woman walked in.

She was probably in her late twenties.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

A small silver necklace around her neck.

She looked around the room.

Then stopped when she saw him.

“Marcus?””

He stood.

“Claire?””

She nodded.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Because both of them were looking at someone connected to a past they never got to share.

Claire sat across from him.

“She said you would look exactly like this.””

Marcus frowned.

“Like what?””

“Like someone who just found out his life wasn’t what he thought.””

The honesty caught him off guard.

“Your mother knew me?””

Claire looked down.

“My mother knew everyone.””

She reached into her bag.

Then placed an envelope on the table.

Marcus looked at it.

“What is this?””

“Something she left for you.””

His chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Vanessa would try to hide the truth.””

Marcus stared at the envelope.

“How long ago did she write this?””

“Six years.””

Six years.

The same amount of time Vanessa had hidden Caleb’s truth.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“I tried.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“I tried finding you.””

“How?””

“My mother had your information.””

“Then why didn’t I hear from you?””

Claire gave a sad smile.

“Because every time I reached out, something happened.””

“What do you mean?””

“She blocked me.””

Marcus froze.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

He already knew.

“Vanessa.””

Claire nodded.

“She told me you didn’t want to hear from us.””

Marcus looked away.

Another lie.

Another wall built around him.

“She said you blamed my mother.””

“For what?””

Claire’s eyes became darker.

“For ruining her life.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“No.””

Claire leaned forward.

“Because it wasn’t true.””

Rain continued tapping against the glass.

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first line made him stop.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, Vanessa failed to keep the truth hidden forever.*

His fingers tightened.

He continued.

*I am sorry you are learning this this way. I wanted to tell you myself, but I was afraid of what Ethan would do.*

Marcus looked at Claire.

“Your mother was afraid of Ethan?””

Claire nodded.

“She was.””

“Why?””

“Because she found out what he had done.””

Marcus looked back at the letter.

The next lines made his breathing slow.

*Ethan has spent years convincing people he is charming, loyal, and successful. But behind closed doors, he destroys anyone who threatens him.*

Marcus swallowed.

“What did he do?””

Claire reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a folder.

Inside were printed documents.

“I don’t know everything.””

She pushed them toward him.

“But my mother collected evidence.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Company records.

Names.

Dates.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

A company account.

Money transferred.

Before he could speak, Claire pointed at one page.

“That’s the reason my mother was scared.””

Marcus looked.

The transfer wasn’t just from his company.

It was connected to another account.

One under a different name.

A name he recognized.

*Lydia Hart Foundation.*

Marcus looked confused.

“My mother started a charity after my father died.””

“Your father?””

“He died when I was young.””

Marcus continued reading.

“What does this have to do with Ethan?””

Claire’s face hardened.

“He used it.””

“For what?””

“He moved money through it.””

Marcus felt sick.

“How?””

“He convinced my mother to let him help manage donations.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“And then?””

“He stole from it.””

Marcus stared.

“Your mother found out.””

“Yes.””

“And she confronted him.””

“Yes.””

“What happened after?””

Claire looked down.

“My mother died two weeks later.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of pain.

Marcus didn’t speak.

He didn’t know what to say.

“Police said it was an accident,” Claire continued.

“But you don’t believe that.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because before she died, she sent me a message.””

Claire pulled out her phone.

She showed him.

A text.

From Lydia.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust Ethan. He knows Marcus cannot find out.*

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“Why did she mention me?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because she knew Ethan’s biggest fear.””

“What was that?””

“That you would discover who he really was.””

Marcus closed the folder.

His mind was moving too fast.

The affair.

The stolen money.

The lies.

The death.

But one thing bothered him.

“One question.””

Claire nodded.

“What?””

“Why did my wife stay with him?””

Claire looked away.

That hesitation returned.

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

Marcus felt exhausted.

“Of course there is.””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Vanessa wasn’t only afraid Ethan would expose her.””

“What was she afraid of?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“She was afraid he would expose what she did.””

Marcus went still.

“What she did?””

Claire nodded.

“My mother didn’t just discover Ethan’s crimes.””

She paused.

“She discovered Vanessa helped him.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

Claire’s eyes filled with sympathy.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

He stood suddenly.

“She wouldn’t.””

Claire didn’t argue.

She simply opened the folder again.

And pulled out one final document.

A handwritten note.

Signed.

*Vanessa Cole.*

Marcus looked at the signature.

His hands began to shake.

Because he knew that handwriting.

He had seen it on birthday cards.

Grocery lists.

Notes left on the kitchen counter.

The woman he loved had written the words herself.

He read the first sentence.

And everything inside him went cold.

*“Ethan, I will do whatever it takes to protect us, even if Marcus has to lose everything.””*

Marcus stared at the page.

The rain outside grew louder.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

Only four words.

*“Please come home. Now.””*

Marcus looked at Claire.

“What happens if I go?””

Claire’s expression turned serious.

“Then you finally hear Vanessa’s side.””

“And if I don’t?””

Claire looked at the letter.

“Then Ethan gets to tell the story first.””

Marcus stood.

Because suddenly he understood.

The truth was no longer hidden.

May you like

But whoever controlled the story next…

Controlled everything.
