Chapter 7: The Secret Marcus Buried

The message remained on every phone screen.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of a threat.

*“Since Marcus wants the truth, maybe he should tell everyone what he did eight years ago.””*

Marcus stared at the screen.

His first reaction was confusion.

Then fear.

Not because he didn’t know Ethan was trying to hurt him.

But because Ethan had chosen those words carefully.

What he did.

Not what Vanessa did.

Not what Ethan did.

What Marcus did.

Caleb looked up.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Nia watched his face.

And she saw it.

The same thing he had seen on Vanessa’s face.

Fear.

“Dad,” she whispered, “what happened?””

Marcus locked his phone.

“Nothing.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

And immediately, he hated himself.

Because he sounded exactly like every adult who had lied to her.

Nia’s expression changed.

“You said you wouldn’t do that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“Say nothing when something is wrong.””

The guilt hit harder than anger ever could.

He sat down.

“You’re right.””

Caleb looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus took a breath.

“I don’t know what Ethan means yet.””

“But he knows something.””

Marcus looked at his son.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always says that.””

The sentence was quiet.

But it hurt.

Because it was true.

Everyone had been hiding things from these children.

Marcus looked at both of them.

“I promise you, I will find out.””

Nia folded her arms around herself.

“Before or after everyone else finds out?””

He had no answer.

The next morning, Marcus went straight to the company.

He didn’t tell Vanessa.

He didn’t tell the children.

He needed space.

He needed facts.

And he needed to know what Ethan had.

The office was already busy when he arrived.

Employees greeted him normally.

They had no idea that the foundation beneath the company was collapsing.

Marcus entered his private office.

The first thing he noticed was the drawer.

It was open.

He always locked it.

Slowly, he walked toward it.

Inside were old files.

Contracts.

Personal documents.

And one empty space.

A folder was missing.

He searched through everything.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something else.

A small piece of paper on his desk.

Not a note.

A receipt.

His eyes narrowed.

The date was eight years earlier.

The same year Ethan had entered his life more deeply.

The same year Caleb was born.

The receipt was from a private clinic.

Marcus stared.

A memory flashed.

A hospital.

Vanessa crying.

A doctor asking him questions.

A signature.

His signature.

But the memory felt incomplete.

Like someone had cut pieces out.

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

“Marcus?””

It was Claire.

Her voice sounded worried.

“Are you okay?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A clinic receipt.””

Silence.

Then Claire said:

“What kind of clinic?””

Marcus looked at the paper.

“A medical clinic.””

“Marcus…”

The fear in her voice made him sit down.

“What?””

“My mother had records from that clinic.””

“What records?””

“She thought Ethan used it to hide something.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Hide what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You called me because you knew something.””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

“My mother wrote one sentence about it.””

“What sentence?””

Claire took a breath.

“She said, ‘Marcus was made to forget.’”

The room felt colder.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked at the receipt again.

“But I think you need to find out.””

That afternoon, Marcus found the old doctor.

It took hours.

The clinic had changed names.

The doctor had retired.

But eventually, Marcus found him.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

An elderly man living quietly outside the city.

When Marcus arrived, the doctor recognized him immediately.

That scared him.

“You remember me?””

The old man looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped inside.

“Why?””

Dr. Whitmore looked away.

“Because I remember what happened.””

“What happened?””

The doctor sighed.

“Your wife came to me.””

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

Marcus waited.

“She was pregnant.””

His chest tightened.

“I know.””

“No.””

The doctor looked directly at him.

“You don’t.””

Marcus went still.

“What does that mean?””

The doctor sat down.

“Vanessa was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“She believed Ethan was dangerous.””

Marcus froze.

“She told you?””

“She told me everything.””

“What everything?””

The doctor looked down.

“She said Ethan knew about the pregnancy.””

Marcus’s hands tightened.

“And?””

“She said Ethan wanted control.””

“Control of what?””

The doctor hesitated.

“The child.””

Marcus felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan believed the child would connect him to Vanessa forever.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It didn’t to me either.””

The doctor sighed.

“But then Vanessa asked me to change the records.””

Marcus stopped.

“Change what records?””

The doctor looked at him.

“The paternity test.””

Silence.

The words were impossible.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

He stood.

“My son’s test?””

The doctor nodded.

“Vanessa wanted the result hidden.””

“Why?””

The doctor’s voice became softer.

“Because she was afraid you would leave.””

Marcus laughed painfully.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The doctor looked at him.

“Because everyone knew.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

The doctor continued.

“Your wife wasn’t trying to protect Ethan.””

Marcus looked back.

“She was trying to protect you.””

The sentence confused him.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

The doctor hesitated.

“Because the truth was worse than you know.””

Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.

“What truth?””

The doctor looked toward the window.

“Ethan didn’t just manipulate Vanessa.””

A pause.

“He manipulated you.””

Marcus returned home after dark.

The house was quiet.

He found Vanessa sitting alone in the living room.

She knew immediately.

“You found out.””

Marcus stood there.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked up.

“About what?””

“About Ethan.””

Her face changed.

“Marcus—”

“How long did you know he was dangerous?””

She looked away.

“That’s not simple.””

“Everything is always not simple with you.””

She closed her eyes.

“Eight years.””

Marcus stared.

“Eight years.””

“Yes.””

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

“I was scared.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You don’t get to use that anymore.””

Vanessa cried.

“I was trapped.””

“How?””

She stood.

“Because Ethan had something over me.””

“What?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He knew about the accident.””

Marcus froze.

“What accident?””

She looked at him.

“The night Lydia died.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt every muscle in his body tense.

“What about it?””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“I was there.””

He stared.

“No.””

“I was there.””

“With Ethan?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped back.

The woman in front of him was someone he loved.

Someone he no longer recognized.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“We argued with Lydia.””

“About what?””

“About telling you everything.””

Marcus felt sick.

“Then?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Ethan drove away.””

“And Lydia?””

“She followed.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to stop him.””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“And then?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He came back alone.””

Marcus couldn’t breathe.

“Vanessa.””

She started crying.

“I should have told you.””

“What happened?””

Her answer came out barely audible.

“Ethan said Lydia wouldn’t be a problem anymore.””

The room went completely still.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

Claire.

He answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Marcus.””

“What happened?””

“I found another file.””

His stomach tightened.

“What file?””

A pause.

Then:

“A police report.””

“About Lydia?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“The report says someone was with Ethan that night.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Claire continued:

“And that person’s name…”

May you like

A long pause.

“Was Vanessa Cole.””
