Chapter 6: The Plan Hidden in the Envelope

I stared at the words on the page.

*How to Annul My Son’s Marriage Before It Begins.*

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The restaurant was almost empty now.

The music had stopped.

The candles on the tables were burning lower.

Only a few guests remained, standing at a distance, pretending not to listen while clearly hearing every word.

My wedding day had started with promises.

It was ending with evidence.

I picked up the email.

My hands were shaking.

“Explain this.””

My voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Everyone heard me.

Martha looked at the floor.

For the first time since I met her, she looked uncertain.

Nick stepped closer.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, what is this?””

Martha finally looked up.

“It’s complicated.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course it is.””

She reached for the folder.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“You don’t get to take things from me anymore.””

The sentence surprised even me.

Because for years, I had let her take small pieces.

My confidence.

My opinions.

My place at family dinners.

My peace.

And somehow, I had convinced myself that keeping things calm was the same as being kind.

It wasn’t.

Sometimes keeping things calm just gave cruel people more room to hurt you.

Lily stood beside the table, crying quietly.

“Emily, I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t understand.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Why did you give her the information?””

Lily wiped her face.

“Because I thought I was helping Nick.””

Nick looked confused.

“Helping me?””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“You told me you were worried about your mom.””

I remembered.

Months ago, Nick had admitted that Martha’s behavior had gotten worse.

He told me he felt trapped.

He told me he didn’t know how to set boundaries without losing his relationship with her.

“I thought if I knew what she was planning,” Lily continued, “I could warn you.””

I frowned.

“Then why did Martha have my wedding schedule?””

Lily looked ashamed.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She swallowed.

“Martha found out I was watching her.””

The room went quiet.

Nick’s expression changed.

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she threatened me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she threaten you with?””

Lily looked at Martha.

And Martha immediately said:

“Don’t.””

Lily shook her head.

“No. Emily deserves to know.””

Martha’s face hardened.

“She’s lying.””

Lily opened her phone.

“I saved everything.””

She handed it to Nick.

He read the screen.

His jaw tightened.

Then he passed it to me.

The first message was from Martha.

*You’re a good girl, Lily. You understand loyalty.*

The second:

*Emily thinks she knows everything. She doesn’t.*

The third:

*If you want to protect Nick, you’ll do what’s best for him.*

I scrolled.

My chest became heavier with every message.

Martha had convinced Lily that she was saving Nick from a mistake.

She had made Lily believe I was the problem.

A woman who had spent years manipulating people didn’t just control her son.

She controlled everyone around him.

I looked at Martha.

“How long have you been doing this?””

She crossed her arms.

“Doing what?””

“Making everyone feel guilty until they do what you want.””

Her eyes flashed.

“I raised my son alone.””

There it was.

The sentence she always used.

The one that ended every argument.

“I sacrificed everything.””

Nick closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

“No.””

She pointed at him.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

“I’m not judging you.””

“You are.””

“I’m telling you that what you did was wrong.””

Her expression broke.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I did everything for you.””

Nick’s voice softened.

“I know.””

“Then why are you standing there with her?””

He looked at me.

Then back at his mother.

“Because loving you doesn’t mean letting you destroy my life.””

Silence.

Martha looked like she had been slapped.

But then she smiled.

A small, bitter smile.

“You think this is over?””

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Nick stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Martha reached into her purse.

And pulled out a second envelope.

She placed it on the table.

“This was supposed to be opened tomorrow.””

Nobody moved.

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Not Nick’s.

Mine.

“Why is my name on it?””

Martha smiled faintly.

“Because it’s the truth you deserve.””

I looked at Nick.

He looked just as confused as I was.

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers touched the paper.

Then Martha whispered:

“After you read that, you’ll understand why I knew you would never really belong in this family.””

I opened it.

May you like

And the first line made my heart stop.

*Emily, if you are reading this, Nick has already chosen you over me.*
