Chapter 3: The Letter in Her Purse

The letter was only one page.

But it felt heavier than my entire wedding dress.

I read the first sentence again.

“Emily will not last.””

My breathing stopped.

I looked at Nick.

He looked away.

Like seeing my reaction hurt him.

I kept reading.

“Nick has always been emotional. He thinks love is enough. Eventually he will understand what this marriage will cost him.””

My fingers trembled.

The room around me disappeared.

Martha had written those words before my wedding.

Before she smiled at me.

Before she hugged me for photographs.

Before she whispered, “Welcome to the family.””

I continued.

“She doesn’t understand our expectations. She doesn’t belong in our circle. I will fix this before it becomes permanent.””

I lowered the paper.

“Fix this?””

Martha stepped forward.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

Jenna laughed.

“Really? Because it looks exactly like what it is.””

Martha ignored her.

“Emily, you don’t understand the context.””

I stared at her.

“You wrote that I don’t belong.””

“You’re twisting my words.””

“No.””

My voice surprised me.

It was calm.

“You wrote them.””

Nick looked at his mother.

“Why?””

Martha’s face softened.

For a moment, I saw the woman Nick had spent his whole life loving.

The mother who cooked his favorite meals.

The woman who held his hand when his father died.

Then that softness vanished.

“Because I know you better than she does.””

Nick looked hurt.

“No, Mom.””

“Yes.””

She pointed at me.

“She will change you.””

I almost laughed.

After everything, she still believed she was protecting him.

“She makes you forget who you are.””

Nick shook his head.

“Emily doesn’t make me forget who I am.””

Martha’s voice became sharper.

“She makes you weak.””

The words hung in the air.

Nick went silent.

And that silence told me everything.

Because deep down, he had heard those words his entire life.

Martha had convinced him that love required permission.

That choosing someone meant disappointing someone else.

I looked at my husband.

“Is that why you left me out there?””

His face fell.

“No.””

“Then why?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because I saw the scissors.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Nick took a breath.

“When I walked back into the reception room, I saw Mom standing behind you.””

His voice cracked.

“I saw your hair on the floor.””

I looked down.

The memory returned.

The white flower beside the cut braid.

The sound of the scissors.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You left.””

“I went to find out why.””

“And?””

He looked at Martha.

“She told me it was a family tradition.””

Martha stayed silent.

“I knew she was lying.””

My heart hurt.

“Nick, you should have come to me.””

“I know.””

His eyes filled.

“I know. I made the wrong choice.””

That was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Not an excuse.

Not a defense.

A mistake.

I looked away.

Because forgiveness was not the same as trust.

Catherine quietly spoke.

“There’s more.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Martha.

“You should tell her.””

Martha’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Catherine looked at me.

“Your wedding wasn’t the first thing she tried to control.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What else?””

Catherine hesitated.

Then she said:

“She tried to break you and Nick up three months ago.””

Nick froze.

“What?””

I turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

Martha immediately said, “That’s ridiculous.””

But Catherine reached into her purse.

And pulled out another document.

“I found this when I visited her house.””

Nick took it.

His expression changed as he read.

Then he looked at his mother.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He slowly lifted his eyes.

“Did you really pay someone to investigate Emily?””

Nobody moved.

Martha’s silence was the answer.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Martha hated me.

I already knew that.

But because she had crossed a line.

A line Nick had promised she would never cross.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

His answer came instantly.

For the first time that night, I believed him.

Then Martha stepped closer.

And whispered something that made the entire room freeze.

“Emily, you still don’t understand.””

I stared at her.

“Understand what?””

She smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

“That Nick didn’t marry you because he chose you.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“He married you because he was trying to escape me.””
