Chapter 5: The Secret Rachel Carried

The message from Daniel remained on my screen for almost a full minute.

*Ask Rachel why she was really there that night.*

Seven words.

That was all.

But those seven words did what Daniel had always been good at doing.

They made me question myself.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

The hotel room suddenly felt different.

A few minutes earlier, Rachel had been the person who came to warn me.

Now, she was the person Daniel had warned me about.

And the worst part was that I didn’t know which version was true.

“Emily,” Rachel said quietly.

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

Her face fell.

“I know what that message did.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know why I’m asking.””

Rachel looked down.

“I do.””

I placed my phone on the table.

“Why was Daniel so sure you were hiding something?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I stood up and walked toward the window.

The city lights blurred through the glass.

“I spent eight years believing I knew the people around me.””

My reflection stared back at me.

A woman who looked exhausted.

A woman who had spent months pretending everything was normal.

A woman who had defended people who were quietly preparing to destroy her.

“Now I’m finding out everyone has a secret.””

Rachel whispered, “I never wanted to hurt you.””

I turned around.

“But you did.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Did Daniel ask you to keep things from me?””

“No.””

“Did Ava?””

Rachel hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“What did she ask you to hide?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“She asked me to convince you to leave Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She wanted me to talk to you.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought you would listen to me.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So she wanted you to help her remove me?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“At first.””

“At first?””

She closed her eyes.

“Emily, I didn’t know the whole plan.””

“There was a plan.””

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

Rachel stayed silent.

I waited.

Finally, she spoke.

“Ava believed Daniel was going to give her control over the company.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she thought she deserved it.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Rachel looked at me.

“You know Daniel’s company struggled after the market changed last year.””

I nodded.

I knew.

Daniel had told me business was stressful.

He had told me he was working late because he was trying to protect our future.

I remembered bringing him coffee at midnight.

I remembered rubbing his shoulders while he stared at spreadsheets.

I remembered saying, “We’ll get through this.””

He had looked at me and said, “I don’t know what I would do without you.””

My stomach twisted.

Because now I wondered if those words had ever been real.

“Daniel was in debt,” Rachel continued.

I froze.

“What?””

“Not normal debt.””

“How much?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“Rachel.””

“Hundreds of thousands.””

The room went silent.

I sat down.

Because that was impossible.

Daniel was careful.

Daniel was responsible.

Daniel had built a successful business.

At least, that was what I thought.

“Why didn’t I know?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because he didn’t want you to know.””

“But we shared finances.””

“Some.””

The word hit me.

Some.

Not all.

I looked at my laptop.

The hidden folder.

The documents.

The pieces I still hadn’t fully connected.

“What did he do?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“He borrowed against company assets.””

“And?””

“He used some of the money for Ava.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“College?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“Her apartment.””

I stared at her.

“Ava has an apartment?””

Rachel nodded.

“For the last year.””

I almost smiled.

Because suddenly I remembered.

All those conversations.

All those times Daniel said Ava was struggling.

All those moments he asked if we could help her “just a little longer.””

I had never questioned it.

Because I loved him.

Because I trusted him.

“How much did we pay?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“How much?””

“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””

The number echoed in my head.

Two hundred thousand.

Ava’s apartment.

Ava’s expenses.

Ava’s lifestyle.

And I had been told we were being careful.

“We?””

Rachel looked at me.

“What?””

“You said ‘we paid.’”

She became quiet.

And that silence was terrifying.

“Rachel.””

She reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this in Daniel’s office.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I’m serious.””

She placed it on the table.

“But I know it matters.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why bring this now?””

“Because after today, I realized something.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Daniel and Ava weren’t trying to scare you away.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then what?””

“They were trying to make sure you left without looking closer.””

I stared at the flash drive.

Because that was exactly what I had done for years.

I had accepted explanations.

I had trusted words.

I had ignored small details because I believed marriage meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

And Daniel had used that against me.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

From Daniel.

This time, no words.

Just a photo.

A document.

I opened it.

My hands froze.

It was a copy of my marriage agreement.

Not the wedding certificate.

Something else.

Something I had never seen before.

A financial agreement.

Signed before our marriage.

I looked at the signature.

Mine.

But I didn’t remember signing it.

“Rachel.””

She looked at the screen.

Then her face went pale.

“Oh no.””

“What?””

She stood up quickly.

“Emily, you need to leave.””

“What?””

“Right now.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel sent you that…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Rachel looked toward the door.

Her voice dropped.

“He knows where you are.””

My heart started pounding.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

Because suddenly we both heard it.

A sound from outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Coming closer.

The hotel hallway was quiet.

Too quiet.

Rachel moved toward the door.

I grabbed her arm.

“Don’t.””

She looked at me.

“What if it’s him?””

“Then we don’t open the door.””

Another step.

Closer.

Then a shadow stopped beneath the gap at the bottom of the door.

My entire body went still.

A knock came.

Three slow knocks.

Rachel whispered my name.

“Emily…”

The person outside spoke.

And the voice made my blood run cold.

“Emily, it’s Daniel.””

I stared at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

Not because Daniel was there.

Because she knew something I didn’t.

Something about why he had come.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Please open the door.””

A pause.

Then the sentence that changed everything:

“I know what you found in the folder…”

May you like

My hand tightened around the edge of the table.

“…because I put it there for you to find.””
