The Bracelet I Left Behind / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Person Who Knocked

For several seconds, I didn’t move.

I stood in the middle of the hotel room, staring at the door as if it had become something dangerous.

The voice came again.

“Emily? I know you’re in there.””

My heart sank.

Because I knew that voice.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Ava’s.

Rachel’s.

Daniel’s older sister.

The woman who had sat beside me during my wedding ceremony.

The woman who had hugged me the day I married Daniel and whispered, “Thank you for giving my brother a second chance at happiness.””

The woman who had watched me leave the backyard that afternoon and said nothing.

I looked at the door.

A part of me wanted to ignore her.

To let her stand there.

To let everyone who had stayed silent feel what silence cost.

But another part of me needed answers.

Slowly, I walked toward the door.

I didn’t open it.

“Why are you here, Rachel?””

There was a pause.

Then a shaky breath.

“Because I should have come sooner.””

My hand rested on the lock.

That sentence alone told me something.

Rachel wasn’t here to defend Daniel.

I opened the door halfway.

She stood in the hallway wearing the same clothes she had worn at the party. Her hair was messy from the wind, and her eyes were red.

Not angry.

Not accusing.

Guilty.

“Can I come in?”” she asked.

I stepped aside.

She entered quietly and looked around the small hotel room.

Her eyes landed on my suitcase near the bed.

On my laptop.

On the bracelet sitting beside it.

She swallowed.

“You really left.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I thought you would.””

That surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

She sat down in the chair near the window.

“It means I knew something was going to happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“Not everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Rachel closed her eyes for a moment.

“You’re right.””

She looked up at me.

“I knew Ava was planning something.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“What?””

Rachel rubbed her hands together nervously.

“I heard her talking to someone a few weeks ago.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation made me angry.

“Rachel.””

“Daniel.””

The name hit harder than I expected.

“What do you mean, Daniel?””

“I don’t know exactly what they were discussing.””

“But you knew they were discussing something.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Her face changed.

Pain crossed her expression.

“I was afraid.””

I laughed quietly.

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing my brother.””

I stared at her.

Because that was the difference between us.

Rachel was afraid of losing Daniel.

I had already lost him.

“I spent eight years afraid of losing my marriage,” I said.

“Do you know what I did when I was afraid?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I stayed.””

The words came out softly.

But they carried everything.

“I stayed when Ava blamed me for things she did. I stayed when Daniel always took her side. I stayed because I thought families had difficult seasons.””

My voice lowered.

“I didn’t realize I was the only one trying to save ours.””

Rachel looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Sorry was easy.

People said sorry after they watched the damage happen.

They said sorry when the fire was already spreading.

“What did Ava plan?”” I asked.

Rachel took a deep breath.

“She wanted you gone.””

I almost smiled.

“She got what she wanted.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward my laptop.

“The accusation today wasn’t supposed to be the ending.””

A chill moved through me.

“What was it supposed to be?””

“A reason.””

“For what?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“For Daniel to finally choose her.””

I frowned.

“He has always chosen her.””

“Not like this.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Emily, you need to understand something about Ava.””

I stayed silent.

“She has spent years believing that everyone leaves.””

I crossed my arms.

“That doesn’t excuse what she did.””

“I know.””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“But after her mother died, Daniel became terrified of hurting her. He promised himself he would never let her feel abandoned again.””

“And she learned how to use that.””

Rachel didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“She learned that if she looked hurt enough, Daniel would do anything to protect her.””

I looked down at the floor.

All those years.

All those moments.

Ava’s tears.

Ava’s misunderstandings.

Ava’s little comments that made me feel like I was always standing outside the family instead of inside it.

I had thought they were accidents.

Maybe they weren’t.

“Why now?”” I asked.

Rachel looked confused.

“What?””

“Why today?””

She became quiet.

And then I saw it.

The fear return to her face.

“Because she found out.””

“Found out what?””

Rachel looked at my laptop.

“That you knew.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Rachel.””

She stood up.

“I swear, Emily. I don’t know how she found out about the folder.””

I stared at her.

Because there was only one way Ava could know.

Unless someone told her.

Unless Daniel told her.

Unless they both knew I had discovered the truth.

My mind started racing.

“What exactly did Ava say?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Before the party?””

“Yes.””

“She said you were going to ruin everything.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Those exact words?””

Rachel nodded.

“She said, ‘Emily thinks she’s smarter than everyone. She thinks she can destroy us and walk away.’”

The room went silent.

Because Ava didn’t sound like someone defending herself.

She sounded like someone defending a secret.

“What else?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She said once you were gone, everything would finally belong to her.””

I looked at the laptop screen.

The hidden folder.

The documents.

The evidence.

Everything suddenly connected differently.

This wasn’t about a shove.

It wasn’t about a family argument.

It was about removing me before I could expose them.

Rachel watched my face.

“You found something, didn’t you?””

I didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“Emily.””

“You need to leave.””

Her expression fell.

“What?””

“I appreciate you coming here.””

“Then let me help you.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know if you’re here because you feel guilty…”

I paused.

“…or because Daniel sent you.””

Rachel looked hurt.

“He didn’t.””

“Maybe.””

“Emily, I would never betray you.””

I looked at her.

“You already did.””

The words hurt both of us.

But they were true.

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I brought this.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Something Daniel doesn’t know I have.””

My attention shifted.

“What?””

Rachel looked at the envelope.

“Something I found six months ago.””

The room became completely silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

She pushed the envelope toward me.

“Open it when you’re ready.””

I didn’t move.

“What is inside?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“Proof that Ava’s story today wasn’t the first time she tried to destroy you.””

My fingers slowly reached for the envelope.

But before I could open it, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

I looked at the screen.

One sentence.

My entire body went still.

*Emily, I know you found the folder. But there’s something you don’t know about Ava.*

I stared at the message.

Then another one appeared.

*You need to hear the truth before she makes you believe the wrong person.*

I looked up at Rachel.

She had gone pale.

Because she knew exactly what Daniel meant.

And before I could ask her why…

Her phone rang.

May you like

The name on the screen made her freeze.

*Ava.*
