Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal

The hearing was postponed.

One week.

That was all we had.

One week wondering what Lennox knew.

One week wondering what Terrence had hidden.

When we left the courthouse, he barely spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“What did she have?””

He stopped walking.

“Mom…”

“What did she have?””

His silence answered.

I felt the old pain return.

The pain of discovering another secret.

“I don’t know how much longer I can do this.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Every apology means I have to remember what happened.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

This time, I believed him.

Because he looked broken.

Not defensive.

Broken.

That night, he came to my house with a box.

“What is that?””

He placed it on the table.

“My things.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know where I belong anymore.””

That hurt.

Because he was my son.

No matter what happened.

I opened the box.

Inside was a small wooden case.

I recognized it immediately.

Walter’s watch.

I stared.

“Where did you get this?””

Terrence looked down.

“Lennox gave it to me years ago.””

My heart stopped.

“She had it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She wanted me to sell it.””

I closed the box.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because it was Dad’s.””

For the first time in months, I saw the little boy I remembered.

The boy who cried when Walter left for business trips.

The boy who kept every birthday card his father ever gave him.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

I nodded.

“You should have.””

The next morning, we returned to court.

Lennox looked confident again.

Until Rebecca presented a new witness.

Madison.

Lennox’s own friend.

The woman she blamed.

Madison explained everything.

The fake boutique.

The hidden accounts.

The stolen investment.

Then came the final question.

“Did Terrence Carter knowingly participate?””

Madison looked at him.

Then looked at me.

“No.””

Everyone reacted.

Rebecca continued.

“Why?””

“Because Lennox manipulated him.””

Lennox stood.

“That’s a lie!””

The judge ordered silence.

But Madison wasn’t finished.

“She told me Terrence was easy to control because he loved his family.””

The room became quiet.

I looked at my son.

He looked ashamed.

But he also looked free.

Because the truth was finally outside his chest.

Then Lennox’s attorney presented their evidence.

A single paper.

“Your honor, we have proof that Terrence Carter transferred funds voluntarily.””

My heart dropped.

The document was placed forward.

Everyone looked at Terrence.

He went pale.

“That’s not real.””

Lennox smiled.

Finally.

She thought she had won.

Rebecca examined the paper.

Then she smiled.

Small.

Confident.

“What?””

She looked at the judge.

“Your honor, this document proves something very important.””

The judge looked up.

“What?””

Rebecca held the paper.

“The signature is fake.””

Lennox’s smile disappeared.

The room erupted.

And then Rebecca revealed the final truth.

“Not only did Lennox steal from my client, she also forged her husband’s signature.””

I watched Lennox.

For the first time, she looked scared.

Really scared.

But then she said something that changed everything.

“You think I did this alone?””

Everyone froze.

She looked directly at Terrence.

“He helped me.””

My son stopped breathing.

I turned toward him.

May you like

And in that moment, I had no idea if I was about to lose my son again.

Or finally get him back.
