Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Money
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Terrence.
Not Lennox.
The only sound was the old clock on Walter’s bookshelf ticking slowly.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Like it was counting down to something.
“Explain,” I said.
Terrence looked broken.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“You were trying to fix what?””
He sat down.
For the first time since he arrived, my son looked like a scared child.
“Victor is Lennox’s brother.””
I looked at her.
She didn’t deny it.
“He convinced us to invest.””
“Invest in what?””
Terrence shook his head.
“I don’t know anymore.””
My eyes moved to Lennox.
“You gave him money?””
She crossed her arms.
“It was an opportunity.””
“Six hundred thousand dollars?””
“It was supposed to become more.””
I laughed softly.
“You gambled your entire home.””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t understand business.””
“No. I understand losing everything.””
Terrence looked at me.
“I thought it was legitimate.””
“Why?””
“Because she showed me documents.””
I looked at Lennox.
“And you?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“I trusted my brother.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“You trusted what you wanted to believe.””
The room went quiet.
Terrence covered his face.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to comfort him.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything, he was still my son.
But love does not mean pretending someone didn’t hurt you.
“Did you know about the plan to use my house?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Not at first.””
“Not at first?””
He looked at me.
“Mom, I swear.””
“Did you know eventually?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The confession hurt worse than the slap.
Because Lennox had hit my face.
But my son had broken my trust.
I walked away from them and opened the back door.
Cold air entered the kitchen.
I needed to breathe.
Behind me, Lennox spoke.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
I turned around.
“Bigger?””
“Yes.””
“You stole from your husband.””
“I made decisions.””
“You lied.””
“I protected us.””
“You attacked me.””
Her expression changed.
For a second, I saw who she really was.
Someone who believed every terrible thing she did had a reasonable explanation.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Victor.””
My entire body went still.
Lennox’s face changed.
She knew.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Lennox never told you the whole truth.””
I looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor sighed.
“The money from the house wasn’t just lost.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Where did it go?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Your son gave me permission to move it.””
I looked at Terrence.
His face drained of color.
“No,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“Terrence?””
He shook his head.
“I never—”
Victor continued.
“And Mrs. Carter… there is one more thing.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“Your house was never their backup plan.””
I looked around at the walls Walter built.
The home I thought was safe.
“The house was the real target.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Terrence stepped toward me.
“Mom, I can explain.””
But before he could say another word, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Then Lennox whispered:
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You know who that is.””
She didn’t answer.
May you like
The door opened.
And standing there was a man holding a folder with my name written across the front.
