Chapter 9: Beneath the Stone Floor
The old house looked abandoned.
Wild grass covered the driveway.
The windows were dusty.
The front door hung slightly crooked.
David stood outside with Jasmine, Jessica, and Michael.
“This was your mother's childhood home,” David said.
Jasmine looked at the building.
“I've never been here.””
“She didn't want you to.””
“Why?””
David stared at the house.
“I don't know.””
Michael walked toward the side yard.
“The structure is behind the house.””
They followed him.
The small stone building was half-covered by vines.
Michael pulled the vines away.
A metal door appeared.
Jasmine stared.
“What's that?””
“A cellar.””
David tried the handle.
Locked.
Michael pulled out a key.
Jasmine looked at him.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your mother's things.””
He unlocked the door.
The hinges groaned.
A staircase descended into darkness.
David switched on his flashlight.
They went down.
The air smelled damp and old.
At the bottom was a stone floor.
Nothing else.
Michael walked to the center.
“She told me once there was something under here.””
David looked at him.
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Jessica stayed near the stairs.
“I don't like this.””
Jasmine looked at her.
“Neither do I.””
David swept his flashlight across the walls.
Then he saw it.
A metal ring embedded in the stone.
He crouched.
“Help me.””
Michael knelt beside him.
Together, they pulled.
A section of the floor lifted.
Beneath it was a steel box.
Jasmine's heart pounded.
David pulled it free.
The box had no lock.
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
And a small digital recorder.
David picked up the recorder.
A red light blinked.
He pressed play.
His wife's voice filled the cellar.
“David, if you are hearing this, I didn't have enough time.””
Jasmine covered her mouth.
Her mother's voice continued.
“I discovered someone had been moving money through accounts connected to the trust.””
David stared at the recorder.
“I confronted him.””
A pause.
“He threatened Jasmine.””
Jasmine's eyes filled with tears.
Jessica whispered, “Oh God.””
The recording continued.
“I don't believe he intends to hurt her physically. He intends to take control of everything she owns.””
David's jaw tightened.
“Who?”” he whispered.
The recording answered.
“Martin.””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“He has been using my trust to move money. He created false documents. He has access to David's legal files. And if something happens to me, he will try to make David believe the trust never existed.””
Jasmine looked at her father.
The pieces finally fit.
The property.
The forged signature.
The bank account.
The missing trust.
Martin.
All of it.
Then her mother's voice became softer.
“But Martin isn't acting alone.””
David's expression changed.
The recording continued.
“He has someone inside the family.””
Jessica looked at Michael.
Michael looked at Jessica.
Jasmine stared between them.
“Who?””
Her mother's voice answered.
“Someone David trusts.””
The recording stopped.
Silence.
Then the cellar door slammed upstairs.
Everyone jumped.
David grabbed his flashlight.
“Who is that?””
Michael ran toward the stairs.
“Stay here.””
“No,” David said.
They climbed quickly.
The cellar door was locked from the outside.
Michael pulled the handle.
“It's stuck.””
David banged against it.
“Who's out there?””
No answer.
Then they heard footsteps.
Moving away.
Michael kicked the door.
Once.
Twice.
On the third kick, the old wood split.
They burst outside.
A car was speeding down the driveway.
David recognized it.
“Martin.””
Jasmine stared.
“How did he know we were here?””
Michael ran to the cellar entrance.
He stopped.
“David.””
David turned.
Michael pointed toward the ground.
A phone lay in the grass.
David picked it up.
The screen was unlocked.
There were dozens of messages.
All from Martin.
But the recipient's name made David's blood run cold.
*Jessica.*
David turned slowly.
Jessica was standing several feet away.
“Jessica?””
She shook her head.
“I can explain.””
Jasmine's voice broke.
“You've been talking to Martin?””
“Not like that.””
David opened the messages.
The most recent one said:
*Did you get the property transferred?*
Another:
*If David finds the trust, you know what happens.*
Another:
*Keep Jasmine away from the bank.*
Jasmine looked at Jessica.
“You knew.””
Jessica began crying.
“I was scared.””
David's voice was shaking.
“You helped him.””
“I didn't know what he was doing at first.””
“When did you find out?””
Jessica covered her face.
“After your wife's account was drained.””
“And you still kept quiet?””
“He threatened my son.””
Jasmine froze.
“What did he threaten?””
Jessica looked at her.
“He said if I didn't cooperate, he would make it look like my son had stolen the money.””
David stared at her.
“So you sacrificed Jasmine to protect him.””
Jessica shook her head.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You almost destroyed my daughter.””
“I know.””
A police siren sounded in the distance.
David looked toward the road.
Then his phone rang.
Martin.
David answered.
“Where are you?””
Martin laughed softly.
“You found the cellar.””
David's expression hardened.
“It's over.””
“No.””
“You're finished.””
Martin's voice became cold.
“You still don't understand.””
“Explain.””
“I never wanted the property.””
David frowned.
“Then what do you want?””
Martin paused.
“The thing your wife hid from you.””
“What?””
“The identity of the person who actually owns the trust.””
David looked at Jasmine.
Martin continued:
“And when you find out, you'll understand why your wife never told you.””
The line went dead.
Jasmine stared at her father.
“Dad…”
David looked down at the documents.
One page had fallen open.
At the bottom was a name.
His wife's name.
And beneath it was another name.
Jasmine.
But beside Jasmine's name was a date.
Not her birth date.
Not the date the trust was created.
It was tomorrow's date.
David's face went pale.
“What is it?”” Jasmine asked.
He couldn't answer.
May you like
Because beneath the date were four words:
*Beneficiary designation expires tomorrow.*
