Chapter 10: What Her Father Did Next
The sun was rising when David returned home.
He had not slept.
Neither had Jasmine.
The documents from the cellar were spread across the dining table.
Michael sat quietly nearby.
Jessica had not spoken since the police arrived.
Martin had disappeared.
But the police now had enough evidence to search for him.
David stared at the page again.
“Beneficiary designation expires tomorrow.””
Jasmine sat across from him.
“What does that mean?””
David looked at Michael.
Michael answered.
“It means Martin was waiting for the trust to lapse.””
“Why?””
“So he could claim the assets.””
Jasmine frowned.
“But how?””
Michael pointed to another document.
“There's a clause here. If the beneficiary doesn't confirm the trust before the deadline, control returns to the trustee.””
Jasmine looked at the signature.
“Who's the trustee?””
David's eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
He whispered:
“Me.””
Jasmine stared at him.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was Martin trying to make me disappear from the property?””
David finally understood.
“He wanted me to believe you'd lost your rights.””
Jasmine looked toward Jessica.
“And you helped him.””
Jessica began crying.
“I know.””
David stood.
“No more excuses.””
Jessica looked up.
“I deserve that.””
“You do.””
She nodded.
“But there's something you don't know.””
David stared at her.
Jessica reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in Martin's desk.””
David took it.
Inside was a handwritten note from his wife.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
*David,*
*If you ever find this, don't punish Jessica until you know why she acted.*
David looked at her.
Jessica lowered her head.
The letter continued.
*She was afraid because Martin threatened her son. But I also knew Jessica was capable of making a terrible mistake when frightened.*
Jasmine's eyes filled with tears.
Her mother had known.
She had anticipated everything.
The letter continued.
*If Jessica tries to remove Jasmine from the property, stop her. But don't destroy her family. Make her understand what she did.*
David folded the letter.
Then looked at Jessica.
“You should have come to me.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You almost destroyed Jasmine's future.””
Jessica cried.
“I know.””
David's voice softened.
“And you will spend the rest of your life making sure she knows you understand that.””
Jessica nodded.
“I will.””
Jasmine looked down.
For the first time, she saw something different in Jessica's face.
Not fear.
Not defensiveness.
Regret.
Real regret.
Then the front door opened.
A police officer entered.
“Mr. Harrison?””
David stood.
“Yes?””
“We found Martin.””
Jasmine held her breath.
“Where?””
“He was at the airport.””
David's eyes narrowed.
“Did he try to leave the country?””
“No.””
The officer shook his head.
“He was waiting for someone.””
“Who?””
The officer looked at Jasmine.
“You.””
Jasmine froze.
“What?””
“He told us he wanted to speak with you before he was arrested.””
David immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The officer raised a hand.
“He's in custody.””
David shook his head.
“My daughter isn't meeting him.””
Jasmine stood.
“I want to.””
“Jasmine.””
“I need answers.””
David stared at her.
Then nodded.
“I'll be there.””
At the station, Martin sat behind the glass.
He looked exhausted.
But when he saw Jasmine, he smiled.
“You look just like her.””
Jasmine sat down.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“What did you do to her trust?””
Martin sighed.
“I stole from it.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could control it.””
“You forged my father's signature.””
“I did.””
“You used Jessica.””
“I did.””
“You tried to remove me from my own property.””
Martin looked down.
“That was Jessica's idea.””
Jasmine's expression hardened.
“But you encouraged her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Martin leaned closer to the glass.
“Because the property wasn't the real target.””
Jasmine stared.
“What was?””
Martin smiled sadly.
“You.””
She frowned.
“Me?””
“Your mother didn't create the trust just to give you money.””
“Then why?””
“Because she discovered something about your birth.””
Jasmine's heart stopped.
“My birth?””
Martin nodded.
“Your mother believed your father wasn't your biological father.””
Silence.
Jasmine couldn't breathe.
Behind her, David stood frozen.
“What?”” he whispered.
Martin continued.
“She never told David because she wasn't certain.””
Jasmine looked at her father.
“Dad?””
David's eyes were filled with tears.
“I didn't know.””
Martin reached into his folder.
“There was a DNA test.””
Jasmine stared at the envelope.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your mother ordered it.””
David's voice shook.
“Did it prove anything?””
Martin looked at him.
“Yes.””
Jasmine's hands trembled.
“What did it say?””
Martin pushed the envelope across the table.
Jasmine opened it.
She read the report.
Then read it again.
Her world seemed to tilt.
David stepped closer.
“Jasmine?””
She looked up.
Tears streamed down her face.
“It says…”
Her voice broke.
“It says you're my father.””
David exhaled shakily.
Jasmine continued reading.
The result was conclusive.
David was her biological father.
Martin had lied.
Again.
Jasmine looked at him.
“You knew this was fake.””
Martin smiled.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father would have protected you.””
David stepped forward.
“You were willing to destroy my family because you couldn't control the trust.””
Martin said nothing.
The officer took him away.
Jasmine remained seated.
David came around the table.
He knelt beside her.
“You're my daughter.””
She broke down.
“I know.””
“I've always known.””
“You thought I might not be.””
“I never needed a test.””
He pulled her into his arms.
Across the room, Jessica stood silently.
David looked at her.
Then at the documents.
The property was restored to Jasmine's name.
The trust was secured.
The missing funds were frozen.
And Martin's scheme was finally exposed.
But David wasn't finished.
When they returned home, he called everyone into the drawing room.
Jessica sat beside her son.
Michael stood near the fireplace.
Jasmine sat beside her father.
David placed the original deed on the table.
“From today onward, no one touches this property without Jasmine's written consent.””
Jessica nodded.
“I agree.””
David looked at her.
“And your son will never be punished for what you did.””
Jessica began crying again.
“Thank you.””
David shook his head.
“Don't thank me.””
He looked at Jasmine.
“Thank her.””
Jasmine gave a small smile.
Then David handed her a second document.
“What is this?””
“The trust.””
She opened it.
At the bottom was a new clause.
Jasmine read it.
Then looked up.
“You made me the sole trustee?””
David smiled.
“No.””
He pointed to the final line.
“We're co-trustees.””
Jasmine's eyes filled with tears.
“Dad…”
“I spent too long protecting this family by keeping things from you.””
He squeezed her hand.
“I'm not doing that anymore.””
Outside, the first light of morning spilled across the property.
The same property Jessica had tried to take from Jasmine.
The same property Martin had tried to control.
The same property Jasmine had nearly lost without even knowing it.
But now the deed carried her name again.
And beside it was her father's signature.
Not forged.
Not hidden.
Not forced.
Given freely.
David looked at his daughter.
“Your mother wanted you protected.””
Jasmine nodded.
“She was.””
David smiled.
“No.””
He looked around the room.
“She protected you herself.””
Then he placed the original letter beside the deed.
“And now it's our turn.””
Jasmine held her father's hand.
May you like
For the first time in months, the house felt like home again.
And this time, nobody could take that away from her.
