Chapter 9: The Recording That Exposed The Real Enemy
The sound of the car door closing outside the parking garage made everyone freeze.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The echo bounced through the empty concrete levels.
Once.
Twice.
Then silence.
Michael immediately stepped in front of me.
“Stay behind me.””
I looked toward the entrance.
My heart was racing.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was finally close.
For five years, I had lived with unanswered questions.
Now the answers were coming faster than I could process them.
My father.
My uncle.
The missing evidence.
The recording.
Claire.
And the person who had spent years manipulating everyone.
Victor looked toward the darkness.
“He knows.””
Robert frowned.
“Who?””
Victor’s expression was grim.
“Daniel.””
The name hung in the air.
My uncle.
A man I had never met.
A man who somehow shaped my entire life from the shadows.
Michael checked his phone.
“No movement.””
Robert looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
Michael nodded.
“Whoever was outside left.””
That should have made me feel better.
It didn’t.
Because I had learned something tonight.
The most dangerous people weren’t always the ones who appeared.
Sometimes they were the ones who stayed hidden.
I looked down at Claire’s number.
“We need to find her.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“You’re coming?””
He looked surprised.
“Of course.””
For a second, neither of us spoke.
Then I said:
“I still don’t know if I can trust you.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“But I believe you’re trying to fix what happened.””
A painful smile appeared on his face.
“That’s more than I deserve.””
We left the garage and moved to a private location Robert owned outside the city.
For the first time that night, we had a moment where nobody was chasing us.
But peace felt impossible.
The room was filled with documents.
Photos.
Old files.
Everything connected to my father’s investigation.
Victor placed the flash drive on the table.
“This is what your father wanted you to have.””
I stared at it.
“What’s on it?””
“Files.””
“That’s all?””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It contains the path to the recording.””
I frowned.
“Why hide the recording separately?””
“Because your father knew someone would search for it.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Victor looked uncomfortable.
“He never told me.””
I sighed.
“Of course he didn’t.””
My father had always been careful.
Always three steps ahead.
Even when he was gone, he was still protecting me.
Michael connected the flash drive to a computer.
The screen filled with encrypted folders.
Hundreds of files.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Then one folder appeared.
*FOR JAMES ONLY.*
My chest tightened.
I clicked it.
Inside was a video file.
No title.
Just a date.
The day before my father disappeared.
Nobody spoke.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my father.
Older than the photographs.
Tired.
But alive.
I forgot how to breathe.
For five years, I had only seen him in memories.
Now he was there.
Moving.
Speaking.
Real.
“James.””
His voice filled the room.
“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””
I covered my mouth.
Robert looked away.
Even Victor looked emotional.
My father continued.
“I know you will want answers. I know you will be angry. You have every right to be.””
He paused.
“But before you judge anyone, you need to understand what happened.””
The video changed.
My father was sitting in the same hidden room we had found earlier.
Behind him were the same photographs.
The same evidence.
“I discovered Daniel was working with Charles Bennett.””
My hands tightened.
“But Daniel was not the only one.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“There was someone else helping him.””
The room became silent.
“Someone I trusted completely.””
My heart raced.
The video continued.
“I spent months searching for proof. I followed money trails. I tracked meetings. I found evidence that someone inside Whitmore Industries was leaking information.””
Robert looked down.
My father continued.
“The person helping Daniel knew everything.””
A pause.
“Everything about my investigation.””
The video flickered.
Then my father said:
“That person was…”
The recording distorted.
The screen froze.
Everyone stared.
“No.””
Victor immediately checked the file.
“It’s corrupted.””
I felt anger rising.
“Someone damaged it.””
Michael nodded.
“Probably.””
I stared at the frozen image.
My father had almost revealed the name.
Almost.
Then the computer suddenly displayed a second file.
A hidden file.
Created five minutes ago.
Michael looked confused.
“That wasn’t there before.””
Nobody touched the computer.
The file opened automatically.
A message appeared.
*YOU FOUND THE FIRST HALF.*
Then another line.
*NOW FIND THE PERSON WHO HEARD THE REST.*
Robert looked at Victor.
“What does that mean?””
Victor’s face changed.
“Someone else was there.””
I looked at him.
“When?””
“The night Thomas recorded this.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Then the computer displayed a final image.
A security photograph.
My father in the hidden room.
And behind him…
A person standing in the doorway.
Watching.
The image was blurry.
But one detail was clear.
A woman’s necklace.
I recognized it.
My breath stopped.
Because I had seen that necklace tonight.
On Mrs. Evelyn Harrington.
“No.””
Robert looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed at the screen.
“That necklace.””
Nobody moved.
“That belongs to Evelyn.””
Victor stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn wasn’t there.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
Victor didn’t answer.
And suddenly I realized something.
Everyone had been telling me what they knew.
But nobody knew everything.
Mrs. Harrington wasn’t just a thief.
She wasn’t just someone who hated me.
She had been connected to my father.
The question was how.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Who is this?””
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“You finally found the recording.””
I recognized it.
Evelyn Harrington.
My body tensed.
“You were there.””
Silence.
Then she laughed softly.
“You’re smarter than people think.””
Robert stepped closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Why?””
Evelyn sighed.
“Because your father was going to expose everyone.””
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became colder.
“Your father thought he could destroy powerful people and walk away.””
I clenched my fist.
“You killed him.””
A pause.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“No, James.””
Her voice lowered.
“Your father was killed by the person he trusted most.””
I looked at Robert.
Then at the phone.
“Who?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“You should ask Robert what happened after your father died.””
Robert’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Evelyn continued.
“The night Thomas disappeared, Robert didn’t just find evidence.””
The room went silent.
“He found the person responsible.””
I looked at Robert.
His expression was unreadable.
“Robert?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Ask him why he protected the killer.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
I turned toward Robert.
“Is it true?””
He looked at me.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
His hand was shaking.
“I was going to tell you.””
I stared at the picture.
“Tell me what?””
Robert placed it on the table.
It showed my father.
Daniel Carter.
And one more person.
A person I recognized.
Because I had seen him tonight.
At the gala.
Serving drinks.
Wearing a waiter’s uniform.
My face went cold.
Robert whispered:
“James…”
The person in the photograph was not my uncle.
Not Bennett.
Not Evelyn.
It was someone who had been standing beside us the entire night.
“The person who betrayed your father…”
May you like
Robert said quietly.
“…was someone you never thought to suspect.””
