Chapter 4: The Man Behind My Father’s Last Investigation
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The conference room felt smaller.
The walls that had always represented luxury and success now felt like they were closing in around me.
I stared at the picture on my phone.
My father.
Alive.
Standing outside a building.
Five years after the world told me he was dead.
And beside me was Robert Whitmore, the man who had been like family to me, looking at that image like he had just seen a ghost.
“Robert,” I said slowly.
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the moment I knew.
There was more.
Much more.
Robert walked toward the window overlooking Manhattan.
The lights of the city reflected against the glass.
For a man who owned half the skyline, he looked incredibly small.
“I need you to understand something, James.””
I clenched my jaw.
“No.””
He turned.
I held up the phone.
“I spent five years visiting my father’s grave. I spent five years believing the last conversation I had with him was our final goodbye.””
My voice cracked.
“And now I find out he might have been alive?””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I never wanted you to experience this.””
“Then you should have told me the truth.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I didn’t regret them.
Robert nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
I expected an excuse.
A defense.
Anything except acceptance.
But he simply stood there.
“I failed your father.””
The room became silent again.
Laura looked down.
Like she had heard those words before.
I picked up the photograph from the table.
“Tell me everything.””
Robert took a deep breath.
“Five years ago, your father came to me with information about someone inside Whitmore Industries.””
“Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“He thought Charles Bennett was stealing from charities.””
Robert nodded.
“But he discovered something bigger.””
“What?””
Robert hesitated.
“He discovered Bennett wasn’t acting alone.””
I looked at the unfinished letter.
“The person helping him?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Robert looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
His voice became heavier.
“Your father was careful. He trusted very few people. He kept his evidence separated. He never put everything in one place.””
“Except this company.””
I pointed at the document.
“Carter Legacy Holdings.””
Robert nodded.
“Your father created that company as a safe place for the evidence.””
I frowned.
“Then why don’t I know about it?””
“Because he made sure nobody knew.””
“Not even me?””
Robert looked at me.
“Especially not you.””
That hurt more than I expected.
My father had spent his entire life protecting me.
But now I wondered if protecting me meant leaving me in the dark.
A knock interrupted us.
Michael stepped inside.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
Robert looked up.
“What happened?””
Michael’s expression was tense.
“The building security cameras caught something.””
“What?””
Michael glanced at me.
“Mrs. Harrington wasn’t the only person who came here tonight with a plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
Michael placed a tablet on the table.
On the screen was security footage from the hotel entrance.
A man in a dark coat walked into the building.
He was holding a folder.
I watched him move through the lobby.
Then he stopped.
Looked directly at the security camera.
Like he knew he was being watched.
Michael paused the video.
“That man entered twenty minutes before the gala started.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
Michael zoomed in.
“I don’t know yet.””
Then he changed the screen.
Another camera angle appeared.
The man was standing near the service hallway.
Near where I had been working.
Near where Mrs. Harrington had confronted me.
I looked at Robert.
“What was he waiting for?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
He was waiting for something to happen.
My phone vibrated again.
Another unknown message.
This time, only four words.
*Ask Robert about Elena.*
I stared at the screen.
Robert noticed.
“What is it?””
I didn’t respond immediately.
Because the name meant nothing to me.
But Robert’s reaction did.
The second he saw the message, his face changed.
“Who is Elena?””
I asked.
Robert froze.
Laura looked at him.
“Robert…”
He closed his eyes.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Who is Elena?””
Robert looked at me.
And for the first time that night, I saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Your father had an assistant.””
I waited.
“Her name was Elena Brooks.””
“What happened to her?””
Robert was quiet.
Then he said:
“She disappeared the same week your father died.””
The room went still.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Did you report it?””
Robert didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You didn’t.””
His silence confirmed it.
I shook my head.
“How many secrets have you been keeping from me?””
Robert looked devastated.
“James—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“My father trusted you.””
“I know.””
“And you still let me believe he died in an accident.””
Robert’s eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Alive?””
I pointed at the message.
“Someone is threatening me. Someone is sending me pictures of my dead father. Someone has been hiding evidence for five years.””
I looked at him.
“How exactly is keeping me ignorant keeping me alive?””
Robert had no answer.
Michael suddenly looked at his tablet.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He zoomed in on the security footage.
“The man who entered earlier.””
He pointed at the screen.
“He left something.””
On the video, the man had placed a small envelope beneath a table near the ballroom entrance.
Michael checked the timestamp.
“Five minutes before Mrs. Harrington spilled the wine.””
My eyes narrowed.
“He planned this.””
Michael nodded.
“Possibly.””
Robert looked at me.
“James, we need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because if someone is bold enough to expose themselves tonight, they’re not finished.””
Before I could answer, the lights in the conference room flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
The room fell into darkness.
Someone gasped outside.
Emergency lights turned on seconds later.
Red.
Dim.
Uncomfortable.
Michael immediately moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone wasn’t running.
Someone wanted us to know they were coming.
Michael opened the door slightly.
Then stopped.
“What is it?””
I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He just looked back at me.
His face had changed.
“What?””
He stepped aside.
On the floor outside the conference room was a single envelope.
No name.
No label.
Just one word written across the front.
*JAMES.*
I picked it up.
Robert grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His voice dropped.
“Because five years ago, your father received the same envelope.””
My heart stopped.
I opened it anyway.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
But it destroyed everything I thought I knew.
*Your father didn’t die trying to expose a criminal.*
I looked at Robert.
The next line was written underneath.
*He died trying to protect you from the person you trusted most.*
And below that…
Was a name.
May you like
A name I never expected to see.
*Robert Whitmore.*
