Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden In The Walls

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

For the second time that night, a single piece of paper had turned my entire world upside down.

The image showed me standing beside Robert inside the ballroom.

The same moment when he defended me.

The same moment when everyone finally knew who I was.

But the message on the back wasn’t about Mrs. Harrington.

It wasn’t about Victor Hale.

It was about Robert.

*You’re looking for the person who betrayed your father.*

*But you’re standing beside him.*

I stared at the words.

My mind fought against them.

Because some part of me refused to believe it.

Robert had been there for me when nobody else was.

When I started the Carter Foundation with nothing but an idea and my father’s old notes, Robert was the first person who believed in me.

He introduced me to donors.

He opened doors.

He gave me advice.

He had never treated me like a poor kid trying to enter a world that wasn’t meant for him.

But now…

Everything pointed back to him.

I looked up.

Robert was watching me.

He had seen my expression change.

“What did it say?””

I didn’t answer.

Michael stepped closer.

“James?””

I handed him the photograph.

He read the message.

Then his face became serious.

Robert reached for it.

I stopped him.

“Don’t.””

The word came out before I could think.

His hand froze.

A painful expression crossed his face.

“You think I did it.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the truth was…

I didn’t know what I believed anymore.

“I think everyone has lied to me.””

Robert lowered his hand.

“That’s fair.””

His answer surprised me.

No anger.

No defense.

Just disappointment.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you were alone in this.””

The hallway became quiet.

Michael checked the room again.

“We need to move.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever left this message knew we would come here.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“They were watching us.””

My eyes moved around the abandoned building.

The old walls.

The broken lights.

The empty hallway.

Someone had been here.

Someone had been close enough to see everything.

Robert looked at the hidden room.

“Your father created this place for a reason.””

I turned toward him.

“And you knew about it?””

“No.””

“Then how did you know where to find it?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“My father told me about this building years ago.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Your father?””

Robert nodded.

“My father and Thomas were partners before everything fell apart.””

“Before my father died?””

“Yes.””

I studied him.

“Why did they fall apart?””

Robert was silent.

Then he said:

“Because they discovered someone inside their circle was stealing from them.””

My heart sank.

“Bennett?””

Robert nodded.

“But Bennett was only part of the problem.””

He looked at the walls.

“There was someone else.””

I walked around the room.

The photographs on the wall showed years of investigation.

My father had been building a case.

Carefully.

Patiently.

He had documented everyone.

Every connection.

Every transaction.

Every meeting.

Then I saw something strange.

A photograph of Robert.

But not with my father.

With Elena.

They were standing outside a restaurant.

The date was six months before my father’s death.

I picked it up.

“Why were you meeting Elena?””

Robert froze.

“I wasn’t.””

I looked at the photograph.

“You’re literally standing beside her.””

He took it from me carefully.

His expression changed.

“I never saw this.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s becoming difficult.””

Robert looked at the picture.

Then at the back.

There was writing.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He turned the photo around.

A sentence was written behind it.

*Ask him why Elena trusted him.*

I looked at Robert.

“Why did she trust you?””

He was silent.

Then he finally answered.

“Because I helped her escape.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

Robert sat down slowly.

“Five years ago, Elena discovered Bennett’s operation. She found evidence that someone was using Whitmore Industries to move money.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

“Because someone found out she knew.””

“Who?””

Robert looked at me.

“The person who ordered your father’s death.””

I felt a chill.

“But you said you didn’t know who that was.””

“I don’t.””

“Then how do you know it was murder?””

Robert looked away.

“Because I saw the damage they did.””

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Robert.””

His voice became quiet.

“The night your father died, I was supposed to meet him.””

I froze.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“At the research building.””

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

“You were the last person to see him alive?””

Robert nodded.

I stared at him.

The evidence was impossible to ignore.

“You understand how this looks.””

“Yes.””

“You were with my father before he died.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Elena disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You hid everything from me.””

“Yes.””

Every answer made it worse.

“Then why should I believe you?””

Robert looked at me.

“Because if I wanted your father gone, I would have let Bennett win.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert stood.

“Your father wasn’t trying to expose me.””

He walked toward the wall.

“He was trying to protect me.””

I didn’t understand.

“What?””

Robert pointed at one of the photographs.

A picture of my father.

Victor.

Bennett.

And another person.

The fourth person had been cut out.

But only partially.

“You see that?””

I nodded.

“Someone removed that person.””

Robert continued.

“Your father discovered who was helping Bennett.””

“Who?””

“That’s the person who matters.””

I stared.

“But why cut themselves out?””

“Because they wanted us looking at the wrong people.””

A noise suddenly came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Michael raised his hand.

“Stay here.””

He moved toward the entrance.

Seconds later, we heard a struggle.

A heavy impact.

Then silence.

I ran out.

“Michael!””

He was standing near the doorway.

But he wasn’t alone.

On the floor was a man.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar near his eyebrow.

Victor Hale.

He looked up at me.

His eyes were filled with urgency.

“James…”

I stepped back.

“You’re alive.””

Victor nodded weakly.

“I’ve been trying to reach you.””

Michael kept him restrained.

“Why?””

Victor looked at Robert.

Then at me.

“Because your father left something for you.””

I stared.

“What?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“I was supposed to give this to Thomas.””

My heart raced.

“What’s on it?””

Victor looked directly at Robert.

“Everything.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Victor.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“You should have told him.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked between them.

“Told me what?””

Victor slowly stood.

“Your father didn’t die because he discovered the traitor.””

I waited.

“He died because he discovered the traitor had already been controlling everything.””

I looked at Robert.

Then at Victor.

“Who?””

Victor’s eyes moved toward the photograph of the missing person.

Then back to me.

“The person who destroyed your father’s life…”

He paused.

“…is someone you have known your entire life.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

Victor looked at Robert.

And said the words I never expected.

“Your father’s closest friend.””

A silence followed.

May you like

Then Victor whispered:

“Your uncle.””
