Chapter 9: The Man in the Photograph

The address belonged to an abandoned printing warehouse.

The building had been empty for years.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

We entered with federal agents behind us.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Old machines.

Wooden pallets.

Stacks of ruined paper.

Agent Mercer searched the main office.

Nothing.

Then Naomi stopped.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

She was standing beside a wall.

There were photographs taped across it.

Dozens.

Children.

Teenagers.

Some were smiling.

Some looked terrified.

Some were so young they couldn't have been older than ten.

I recognized the foundation's logo on several.

My stomach tightened.

Agent Mercer photographed everything.

Then I saw him.

Michael.

Older.

Not seventeen anymore.

The photograph showed a man in his thirties standing beside a woman and a little girl.

I stepped closer.

The woman was Marissa.

The girl was maybe six.

And Michael was holding a folder.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Seven years after Platform 7.

“He survived,” I whispered.

Naomi nodded.

“He survived.””

Agent Mercer examined the photograph.

“There's an address.””

I turned.

“Where?””

She pointed to the corner.

A handwritten location.

A small town in Wisconsin.

We found the house before sunrise.

A porch light was on.

I stood at the door for several seconds.

I had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.

Michael opening the door.

Michael being dead.

Michael refusing to see me.

Michael not knowing who I was.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

A woman's voice called from inside.

“Who is it?””

“Ethan Brooks.””

Silence.

The door opened.

The woman from the photograph stood there.

She was older now.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

She looked at me.

Then covered her mouth.

“You're him.””

I couldn't speak.

“Where is Michael?””

She stepped aside.

“He's in the hospital.””

My heart dropped.

“What happened?””

“Stroke.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

I looked at Naomi.

“Can I see him?””

The woman nodded.

“He's awake.””

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic.

Machines beeped quietly.

A man lay beneath a white blanket.

Older.

Thinner.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

He looked at me.

I stopped at the doorway.

Neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

“You got tall.””

I laughed.

It came out broken.

“I was fourteen.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“I saw you.””

I walked closer.

“You were at Platform 7.””

He nodded.

“I was.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to stop Dad.””

I sat beside him.

“What happened?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“I had the ledger.””

“The foundation records?””

“Yes.””

“I found them when I was seventeen.””

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I did.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Someone warned me the police had been contacted by Dad first.””

Naomi leaned forward.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Michael coughed.

Then continued.

“I took copies to Marissa.””

“You knew her?””

“She was the only social worker who didn't look away.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“What happened after I was left?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Dad thought you were gone.””

“What?””

“He didn't know you had told the station officer everything.””

I stared at him.

“That report was the problem.””

“How?””

“Dad thought he had controlled the story.””

Michael opened his eyes.

“But you created a record he couldn't erase.””

Naomi looked at me.

“That's why they paid Northbridge.””

Michael nodded.

“They wanted the report buried.””

“And you?””

“I tried to get it out.””

“What happened?””

“I was followed.””

“By Dad?””

“By one of his lawyers.””

Michael looked toward the door.

“I escaped.””

“For twenty years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because every time I tried, someone found me.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

He didn't answer.

Then he said:

“Your father wasn't the only person involved.””

Naomi stiffened.

“Who else?””

Michael reached toward the bedside table.

His fingers trembled.

His wife helped him.

He pulled out a folded document.

He handed it to me.

It was a list.

Names.

Foundation board members.

Lawyers.

Accountants.

One name was circled.

*Daniel Price.*

My breath caught.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“He was involved.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel saved me.””

“He helped you.””

“Then how?””

Michael's expression was grim.

“Because he regretted it.””

I stared at the name.

“What did he do?””

“He filed your report.””

“Yes.””

“And then he gave your father a copy.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“He was paid.””

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

“But he later tried to correct it.””

I remembered Daniel's words.

If anyone tells you what happened wasn't real, call me.

Maybe that hadn't been an apology.

Maybe it had been guilt.

I looked at the list.

There was one final page.

At the bottom was another name.

*Marissa Cole.*

I looked up.

Michael shook his head.

“Don't misunderstand.””

“What?””

“She wasn't part of it.””

“Then why is her name there?””

He looked at me.

“Because she was the person they were trying to silence.””

Naomi took the page.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“There are signatures.””

“Whose?””

She pointed.

My father's.

Then Vanessa's.

Then my mother's.

And beneath them was one more signature.

Mine.

I stared at it.

“I never signed this.””

Michael whispered:

“They forged your signature.””

The document was dated the day after Platform 7.

And beside my name was a statement:

*I voluntarily left my family and decline further assistance.*

My hands began shaking.

“They made me the author of my own disappearance.””

Michael nodded.

Then he reached for my hand.

“I've spent twenty years trying to prove they did it.””

I looked at him.

“You don't have to anymore.””

He frowned.

“Why?””

I held up the document.

“Because this time, they left a paper trail.””

Naomi's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Ethan, your father is trying to make a deal.””

“What kind?””

She lowered the phone.

“He says he'll tell us where the remaining children are.””

I stared at her.

“And what does he want?””

Naomi's face hardened.

“He wants immunity.””

Michael closed his eyes.

May you like

Then whispered:

“He's lying.””
