Chapter 7: The Storage Unit

The storage facility sat forty minutes outside the city.

By the time we arrived, rain had started falling.

Agent Mercer drove.

Naomi sat beside her.

I was in the back seat, staring through the window.

I couldn't stop thinking about Michael.

A brother I hadn't known existed.

A boy who had disappeared before I understood what disappearing meant.

At fourteen, I had thought my family had left me because I was weak.

Now I wondered whether I had been left because I was convenient.

Because something had to happen to me that night.

Something that would distract everyone.

Something that would create a story.

A runaway.

A troubled child.

A family tragedy.

Anything but the truth.

The storage facility manager was waiting under an awning.

“Unit 417,” he said.

Agent Mercer showed her credentials.

“Who rented it?””

The manager swallowed.

“Foundation account.””

“Name?””

“Brooks Family Foundation.””

“How long?””

“Twenty years.””

I looked at Naomi.

She nodded once.

The lock was old.

The door rolled upward.

Dust filled the air.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Legal files.

Donation records.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Old computers.

Boxes labeled with years.

2010.

2011.

2012.

2013.

And one box with no year.

Just a name.

*MICHAEL.*

My legs went weak.

I reached for it.

Naomi stopped me.

“Wait.””

Agent Mercer put on gloves.

She opened the box.

Inside was a stack of notebooks.

A cassette recorder.

Three photographs.

And an envelope.

My name was written across it.

*ETHAN.*

I stared at it.

“That's mine.””

Naomi looked at me.

“Do you want me to open it?””

I nodded.

She carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first line made my chest tighten.

*Ethan, if you're reading this, Dad didn't manage to make you disappear too.*

I stopped breathing.

Naomi continued reading silently.

Then she handed it to me.

I read.

I don't know how old you'll be when you see this.

I don't know if you'll ever see it.

Dad says you're too young to understand.

He's wrong.

You understand more than anyone thinks.

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

He uses the foundation to move children between programs. Some are placed with families. Some are returned. Some records don't match.

I found a ledger.

I copied names.

Dad found out.

I looked up.

“Naomi.””

She took the letter.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then she looked toward Agent Mercer.

“This changes everything.””

I turned to the photographs.

The first showed Michael standing beside Vanessa.

The second showed him outside the foundation's original office.

The third showed something else.

A train platform.

Platform 7.

My heart stopped.

Michael was standing there.

In the photograph, he looked directly at the camera.

Behind him was the station clock.

The time was 5:43 p.m.

The same night I was abandoned.

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

*He knows.*

I looked at my father.

He had been brought into the storage facility under federal supervision.

His face had gone gray.

“You were there.””

He said nothing.

“You were there that night.””

“I told you.””

“No.””

I held up the photograph.

“You told me Michael was gone.””

Dad stared at it.

“You were fourteen.””

“And Michael was seventeen.””

He said nothing.

“What happened?””

His lips parted.

No sound came out.

Agent Mercer stepped forward.

“Richard.””

Dad finally spoke.

“He wasn't supposed to be there.””

“Why?””

“He followed Vanessa.””

Vanessa, standing behind us, began crying.

I turned.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“I didn't know he was there.””

Dad looked at her.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You spoke to him.””

Vanessa backed away.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“He knew about the records.””

“What records?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“The children.””

Naomi opened one of the notebooks.

Pages were filled with names.

Dates.

Placement locations.

Payments.

Some names had been crossed out.

Others had one word beside them.

*TRANSFERRED.*

Others:

*RETURNED.*

And some:

*MISSING.*

My hands became cold.

“How many?””

Agent Mercer counted quickly.

“Forty-three.””

I looked at her.

“Forty-three children?””

“Forty-three names.””

Naomi turned another page.

“There's something else.””

She pointed to a column.

Payments.

Every transfer had an amount.

Some were thousands.

Some were tens of thousands.

And one category appeared repeatedly.

*Emergency family placement fee.*

I felt sick.

“They sold placements.””

Agent Mercer shook her head.

“We don't know that yet.””

“But the money—”

“We need to establish who received it.””

She picked up another document.

“Which is why this matters.””

It was a bank statement.

The account belonged to the foundation.

The receiving account belonged to a company called *Northbridge Consulting*.

I looked at Dad.

“What is Northbridge?””

He didn't answer.

Naomi did.

“Your father's private consulting company.””

My father looked at me.

“You have no idea what you're accusing me of.””

“Then explain it.””

He stepped closer.

“You think you know everything because you found some old files?””

“No.””

I held up Michael's letter.

“I know because my brother tried to tell me.””

Dad's expression cracked.

“Michael wasn't your brother.””

I froze.

“What?””

Dad's voice dropped.

“He wasn't biologically related to you.””

I looked at Mom.

She nodded through tears.

“He was my son.””

“But not Dad's?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I stared at her.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at Dad.

“Why did you call him your son?””

Dad looked away.

And in that moment, I understood.

He hadn't hidden Michael because of family.

He had hidden him because Michael knew something.

Something Dad couldn't afford to let him tell.

Agent Mercer opened another file.

“We found a second name connected to Northbridge.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then showed me the document.

The name was mine.

*ETHAN BROOKS.*

My blood ran cold.

Next to my name was a payment date.

The day after Platform 7.

And beside it:

*PLACEMENT SUCCESSFUL.*

I looked at Naomi.

“I was sold?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Agent Mercer stared at the document.

“Ethan, I don't think you were the child they were placing.””

May you like

She turned the page.

“You were the witness they were trying to erase.””
