Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Hid From Me

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

Not Richard.

Not Vanessa.

Not Madison.

Not me.

The last sentence replayed in my head.

*“The person who gave Richard access to everything was the person who slept beside me every night.””*

My eyes slowly moved toward Vanessa.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

My stepmother.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had made me feel unwanted.

The woman who had thrown my clothes onto the floor just hours earlier.

Vanessa looked away.

And that hurt more than if she had screamed.

“Mom…”

Madison’s voice broke.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Please.””

“No.””

Madison stepped back.

“You knew.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“You knew everything.””

“I made mistakes.””

“A mistake is forgetting someone’s birthday.””

Madison’s voice shook.

“A mistake is buying the wrong gift.””

She pointed toward Richard.

“This is not a mistake.””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

“I was trying to fix it.””

Richard laughed.

“Still pretending you’re the victim.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You used me.””

“And you let me.””

The words landed like a slap.

I looked between them.

“You two were together.””

Nobody responded.

That silence was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Vanessa had betrayed Dad.

Because suddenly, every memory I had of our family felt questionable.

Every dinner.

Every holiday.

Every conversation.

How much of it was real?

“How long?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Emily…”

“How long did you know him?””

She swallowed.

“Two years.””

Madison gasped.

“Two years?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I met Richard before Daniel discovered anything.””

My voice became quiet.

“And Dad knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

I looked down.

The same sentence again.

Protect me.

Everyone kept saying they were protecting me.

But nobody thought I deserved the truth.

“You all keep saying that,” I whispered.

“What?””

“That you were protecting me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“But you were protecting yourselves.””

She had no answer.

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough emotional speeches.””

His calmness returned.

That scared me.

He wasn’t afraid anymore.

He was calculating.

“The documents are still missing.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re not getting them.””

“You think you can stop me now?””

“Yes.””

Richard smiled.

“You couldn’t stop me before.””

The words made Vanessa flinch.

I noticed.

And so did Madison.

“What did you do?”” Madison whispered.

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

“I’m sorry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I gave him access.””

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

Madison’s face changed.

“You gave him access to Dad’s company?””

Vanessa nodded.

“At first, I thought he was helping.””

Richard laughed.

“You thought I was helping?””

“I thought you were giving me a way out.””

“A way out of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I understood.

She was trapped.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Financially.

Something had happened long before tonight.

“I was drowning,” she whispered.

Madison shook her head.

“So you dragged everyone else under?””

Vanessa cried silently.

“I never wanted Daniel hurt.””

“Then why is he gone?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was too ugly.

Richard stepped closer.

“Your father found the evidence.””

I looked at him.

“What evidence?””

“The proof that Vanessa transferred company money.””

My eyes moved to her.

She nodded.

“I did.””

Madison covered her mouth.

“Mom…”

“But I didn’t keep it.””

“What?””

Richard interrupted.

“She moved it because I told her to.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Don’t.””

“You want honesty now? Fine.””

He looked at me.

“Your stepmother thought she was protecting her daughter.””

Madison looked confused.

“My daughter?””

Richard smiled.

“Your mother found out I was investigating Daniel. She thought if she cooperated, she could protect Madison.””

I stared.

“From what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Richard threatened us.””

The night became silent.

“He said if I didn’t help him, he would destroy everything.””

Richard rolled his eyes.

“You make it sound so dramatic.””

“You threatened my child.””

“And you agreed.””

Madison looked devastated.

“I was the reason?””

Vanessa immediately turned toward her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Madison shook her head.

“I was.””

“No.””

“I was why you helped him.””

Vanessa grabbed her hands.

“You were why I tried to fight him.””

For a moment, mother and daughter just stared at each other.

And I realized something complicated.

Vanessa had done terrible things.

But maybe she wasn’t the monster I thought she was.

Maybe she was someone who made a terrible choice and spent two years trying to escape it.

A sound came from the road.

Another vehicle.

Everyone froze.

Richard looked toward the approaching headlights.

“Move.””

Nobody moved.

His expression changed.

“Now.””

I looked at him.

“Who is coming?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Then I saw the vehicle.

A police car.

Two officers stepped out.

Behind them was someone else.

Someone I recognized.

My father’s lawyer.

Mr. Carter.

He walked toward us holding a folder.

“Emily.””

I stared.

“How do you know where we are?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at Richard.

“Because your father planned for this moment.””

Richard immediately stepped back.

“This changes nothing.””

Mr. Carter ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Your father asked me to find you if anything happened.””

“Where is he?””

The lawyer hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me.

“Mr. Carter.””

He took a breath.

“Your father is safe.””

I almost collapsed from relief.

“But?””

“There’s a problem.””

“What?””

“He can’t return yet.””

“Why?””

“Because the documents he collected prove more than financial fraud.””

The night went silent.

“What else do they prove?””

Mr. Carter looked at Richard.

“They prove someone attempted to frame Daniel for the crime they committed.””

My eyes widened.

Richard’s expression changed.

Because for the first time…

He looked caught.

Mr. Carter opened the folder he carried.

Inside were copies of documents.

“Your father wanted you to see these.””

I looked down.

The first page was a bank record.

The second was a contract.

The third…

Was a photograph.

My breath stopped.

It showed Richard.

Standing with someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been helping Vanessa search for the folder.

I looked at the name written underneath.

And everything inside me went cold.

Because the person in the photograph was not Vanessa.

It wasn’t Madison.

It wasn’t Richard.

It was the one person Dad never warned me about.

The one person who had been pretending to help us.

Mr. Carter watched my reaction.

“You know who that is.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I did.

And suddenly Dad’s final warning made sense.

*“The person who betrayed me wasn’t someone who hated me. It was someone who loved me.””*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

Then at Richard.

And I finally understood.

Vanessa had been hiding a crime.

But she wasn’t the person who destroyed my family.

Someone else had been pulling the strings from the beginning.

Someone closer.

Someone I had never questioned.

Mr. Carter lowered his voice.

“Emily, before you see anything else…”

He paused.

“Your father wanted me to tell you one thing.””

“What?””

His expression became serious.

“He said the person you’re about to confront will try to convince you that Daniel abandoned you.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because they know the truth will destroy them.””

I looked back at the photograph.

At the familiar face.

At the person standing beside Richard.

And I whispered the only words I could manage.

“No…”

May you like

Because the person who betrayed my father…

Was the person who had been helping me find him.
