Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Lies

The doorknob moved slowly.

Not violently.

Not impatiently.

Almost calmly.

That was what terrified me.

Whoever was outside wasn’t rushing because he already believed he had control.

Madison grabbed my wrist.

“Hide,” she whispered again.

For once, I listened.

We moved silently toward the wooden shelves Dad had built.

The same shelves that had held my books, my memories, and now the secrets that had destroyed the illusion of my family.

Madison pressed her fingers against the side panel.

“The compartment,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. But I saw Mom searching here earlier.””

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I didn’t know what she found.””

The door handle stopped turning.

A shadow appeared beneath the crack.

Someone was standing outside.

I held my breath.

Madison pushed the hidden panel open.

“Get inside.””

I stared at the tiny space.

“You’re joking.””

“No.””

“There’s barely enough room.””

“Do you want to argue right now?””

A soft knock came from the door.

Not a friendly knock.

A warning.

“Emily?”” Vanessa called.

Her voice was different.

Not cold.

Not angry.

Careful.

“I know you’re awake.””

Madison looked at me.

The panic in her eyes was enough.

She knew Vanessa wasn’t alone.

I squeezed into the hidden compartment.

Madison followed and pulled the panel closed behind us.

Darkness surrounded us.

The space smelled like old wood and dust.

My shoulder pressed against hers.

Neither of us spoke.

Outside, the door opened.

Footsteps entered.

“She’s not here,” Vanessa said.

A man answered.

“She was.””

His voice was deep.

Controlled.

“You heard her.””

“I heard something.””

“No.””

A pause.

“She knows.””

My stomach dropped.

The man walked deeper into the room.

I could hear every step.

Every movement.

He was close.

Too close.

“She’s more observant than you expected,” he said.

Vanessa sighed.

“She’s a child.””

The man laughed softly.

“Your mistake was thinking that.””

I felt Madison tense beside me.

Then the man continued.

“Her father raised her better than you realized.””

My fingers curled into fists.

Dad.

Even now, people kept talking about him like he was a threat.

Like he had done something wrong.

“What happens if she finds the folder?”” Vanessa asked.

The man’s voice became colder.

“Then we all lose.””

“And what happens if she tells him?””

“He won’t answer.””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”” Vanessa asked.

The man didn’t respond immediately.

Then he said:

“Your husband is not coming back.””

My entire body went numb.

Beside me, Madison covered her mouth.

I felt her shaking.

Vanessa whispered:

“You said he would leave quietly.””

“He did.””

“Then why are you worried?””

“Because he left something behind.””

The man stepped closer.

I could hear the floor creak.

“The account.””

I held my breath.

There it was.

The word.

The secret.

“What account?”” Vanessa asked.

The man sounded irritated.

“Don’t play stupid.””

“I’m not.””

“You know exactly what Daniel discovered.””

Daniel.

My father’s name.

“Your husband found the offshore transfers. He found the records. He found everything.””

I felt dizzy.

Money.

Documents.

Proof.

Dad wasn’t just fighting with Vanessa.

He had uncovered something.

Something serious.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“He never should have looked.””

The man laughed.

“No. He never should have trusted you.””

My chest tightened.

The room went silent again.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

“I did everything you asked.””

The man answered:

“And you failed.””

I felt Madison freeze.

She knew this man.

Or at least she knew enough.

I leaned closer to her.

She shook her head silently.

No.

Don’t ask.

Not now.

The man continued.

“You were supposed to control the house. Control Emily. Control Daniel.””

“Daniel is gone.””

“For now.””

The words made my skin crawl.

For now.

Not forever.

Vanessa whispered:

“What about Emily?””

The man paused.

Then:

“She’s the problem.””

My heart pounded.

“She’s sixteen,” Vanessa said.

“She’s Daniel’s daughter.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“It means everything.””

Footsteps moved again.

Closer.

Then the man said:

“Find the folder.””

“I told you I don’t know where it is.””

“Then find out.””

“What if Emily has it?””

A pause.

“If she does…”

The silence that followed was worse than the words.

Then he finished:

“Make sure she doesn’t get the chance to use it.””

My blood went cold.

Madison grabbed my hand.

Her fingers trembled.

We stayed hidden until the footsteps finally moved away.

The bedroom door closed.

Only then did we breathe.

After several seconds, Madison pushed the panel open.

We climbed out.

I immediately turned toward her.

“Who was that?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You know something.””

“I know his name.””

“Then tell me.””

Madison looked at the closed door.

Then whispered:

“Richard.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Richard?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know exactly.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“My mom met him two years ago.””

I froze.

“Two years?””

She nodded.

“I thought he was just a business friend.””

“And now?””

“Now I think I was wrong.””

I sat down on the bed.

My entire world felt like it had been rearranged overnight.

My father wasn’t missing because of work.

My stepmother wasn’t just cruel.

And Madison wasn’t just a spoiled girl trying to steal my room.

Everyone had been playing a role.

Everyone except me.

“I need to find Dad,” I said.

Madison looked at me.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

I stood.

“I’m done waiting.””

She watched me.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the shelves.

The hidden compartment.

The place Dad trusted me to find.

“Find the folder.””

Madison looked nervous.

“But Mom has it.””

“Then we take it back.””

“You don’t understand.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then reached into her pocket.

“I lied.””

I stared.

“About what?””

“The folder.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I said Mom took it.””

“Didn’t she?””

Madison slowly pulled out a small object.

A key.

Not a normal key.

An old brass key with a tiny blue mark painted on the top.

“I got this from the folder before she took it.””

I looked at it.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure if I could trust you.””

I almost laughed.

“You weren’t sure if you could trust me?””

She looked away.

“Everyone in this house has been lying.””

That shut me up.

Because she was right.

I took the key from her hand.

It was cold.

Heavy.

Like it carried a secret.

“What does it open?””

Madison shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone buzzed.

Both of us froze.

A new message.

From Dad.

I opened it immediately.

This time, it wasn’t a warning.

It was a location.

An address.

And one sentence.

*“If you found the key, you found the beginning. Go there before Vanessa does.””*

I stared at the screen.

Madison leaned closer.

“Where is it?””

I looked at the address.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew that place.

Everyone in town knew it.

It was the old workshop where Dad built my bedroom.

The place he had closed two years ago.

The place he told me he would never return to.

I looked at Madison.

“He wants us to go there.””

She shook her head.

“Emily…”

“What?””

Her face turned pale.

“That workshop burned down last year.””

I looked back at the message.

The address.

The key.

Dad’s warning.

Something didn’t make sense.

Then another message appeared.

Not from Dad.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*“If you go to the workshop, you’ll learn why your father disappeared.””*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then a second message appeared.

*“But you won’t like who you find there.””*
