Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Walls

I read the sentence three times before my mind finally accepted it.

*Your stepmother is not trying to take your room. She is trying to take something much bigger.*

The paper trembled between my fingers.

For months, I had believed Vanessa was simply cold.

A woman who never really accepted me.

A woman who smiled for family photos but never looked at me when the cameras were gone.

I thought she just wanted her daughter to have nicer things.

I thought this was about a bedroom.

A stupid bedroom.

But Dad had hidden a note inside the walls.

He had waited for me to find it.

That meant he knew something was coming.

I turned the paper over, hoping there would be more.

There was.

A second paragraph was written beneath the first.

*“I wanted to tell you myself, but I needed proof before I made any decisions. Trust your instincts. You’ve always noticed things other people ignore.””*

My throat tightened.

Dad believed me.

Even before I knew there was something wrong, he believed I would see it.

I continued reading.

*“The blue folder contains everything. Do not let Vanessa get it. Do not show her you found this message.””*

I stopped.

A cold wave moved through me.

The blue folder.

The one Madison accidentally mentioned.

The one Vanessa reacted to.

It wasn’t just a random folder.

It was the reason Dad was gone.

I folded the paper quickly and placed it inside my hoodie pocket.

Then I heard something.

A floorboard creaked outside my room.

I froze.

Someone was standing in the hallway.

I slowly turned toward the door.

“Emily?””

Vanessa’s voice.

I closed the hidden compartment immediately.

“What?””

The door opened slightly.

She looked at me.

Then at the shelf.

My heart raced.

Had she seen?

“What are you doing?””

“Nothing.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Nothing?””

“Yes.””

She stepped inside.

“You were always a terrible liar.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

“You should know.””

Her expression hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You’ve been lying to me for months.””

The silence between us felt heavy.

For a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.

Instead, she sighed.

“Your father has filled your head with ideas.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Dad barely told me anything.””

“Exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked away.

Again.

Always looking away.

“Go to sleep, Emily.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“That’s it?””

“What do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You think the truth is simple because you’re young.””

“No. I think the truth is something you’ve been hiding because you’re scared.””

That landed.

Her eyes flashed.

But before she could answer, a voice came from the hallway.

“Mom?””

Madison appeared at the door.

Her eyes moved between us.

“What’s happening?””

Vanessa immediately changed.

The fear disappeared.

The cold expression returned.

“Nothing.””

Madison looked at me.

Then at the shelf.

She noticed.

I knew she noticed.

Because her face changed.

“You found it.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“Found what?””

Madison’s eyes widened slightly.

She realized she had said too much.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Madison.””

But it was too late.

I stepped toward her.

“What do you know?””

“Nothing.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You just said ‘you found it.’”

Madison swallowed.

Vanessa moved between us.

“Enough.””

“No,” I said.

“Not this time.””

I looked at Madison.

“What is the blue folder?””

Her face went pale.

And that was my answer.

She knew.

“You know where it is.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Madison shook her head.

“Emily, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Vanessa.

That was the moment I realized something.

Madison wasn’t just following her mother.

She was afraid of her too.

“Go downstairs,” Vanessa ordered.

Madison didn’t move.

“Mom…”

“Now.””

Madison left.

But before she disappeared, she looked back at me.

Not with the same cruel smile from earlier.

With something closer to guilt.

When the door closed, I faced Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“What did you do that Dad needed proof?””

She laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“You really think I’m the villain here?””

“I think you’re hiding something.””

“You always did have your father’s imagination.””

“And you always hated that.””

Her eyes flashed.

For a second, I saw the person behind the mask.

Not a stepmother.

Not a wife.

Someone desperate.

“You need to understand something, Emily.””

“What?””

“Your father was not the man you think he was.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

She walked toward the door.

“Ask him.””

“I can’t. He’s the one who sent me a warning about you.””

That stopped her.

Her hand tightened around the doorknob.

Then she said something so quietly I almost missed it.

“He already chose.””

“What?””

She looked back.

“He chose you.””

The words confused me.

“What does that mean?””

But she was gone.

I waited until the house became silent.

Then I grabbed my jacket.

I needed answers.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from Madison.

From the person who had been keeping secrets inside my own room.

Dad.

I called him.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then voicemail.

I hung up.

Called again.

Nothing.

A strange panic started building inside me.

Dad always answered.

Even if he was busy, he answered.

I opened our messages.

I typed:

*Dad, I found the note. Please call me.*

I stared at the screen.

Then deleted it.

No.

Dad told me not to show Vanessa I found the message.

That included anything she could see.

I typed again.

*I need to talk to you. Are you safe?*

I sent it.

Then I waited.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Nothing.

I walked downstairs quietly.

The house was dark except for the kitchen light.

I heard voices.

Vanessa and Madison.

I stopped near the doorway.

“You shouldn’t have said anything,” Vanessa whispered.

“I didn’t mean to.””

“You almost ruined everything.””

“Mom, what if Emily tells him?””

“She won’t.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she doesn’t know where he is.””

My heart stopped.

Where he is?

Not where he was.

Where he is.

I leaned closer.

Madison lowered her voice.

“What happens if she finds the folder?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Then we lose everything.””

I stepped back.

My foot hit the floor.

A small sound.

The voices stopped.

“Who’s there?”” Vanessa called.

I moved quickly behind the hallway wall.

A few seconds later, Vanessa appeared.

She looked around.

Nothing.

Then she slowly walked back.

I waited.

My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure they could hear it.

Lose everything.

Those words stayed in my head.

What could possibly be inside that folder?

Money?

Documents?

Something about Dad’s business?

I went back upstairs.

I didn’t sleep.

At 3:17 in the morning, my phone finally buzzed.

I grabbed it instantly.

A message from Dad.

My hands shook as I opened it.

*Emily, don’t go looking for the blue folder alone. Vanessa knows you’re close.*

I stared.

How did he know?

Another message appeared.

*There is someone in the house helping her.*

My blood ran cold.

Someone else.

Someone inside the house.

Then the final message came through.

A photo.

Not a photo of a document.

Not a photo of a folder.

A photo of the person Dad was warning me about.

I zoomed in.

And my entire body went still.

Because the person standing beside Vanessa in the picture…

Was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been pretending to help me all night.

Someone who knew exactly where my father kept his secrets.

May you like

The caption underneath the photo contained only four words.

*“Don’t trust your sister.””*
