Chapter 8: The Secret My Father Kept

I couldn't move.

The bank statement lay between us.

The amount was $112,000.

The recipient was Northbridge Property Holdings.

And the listed director was my father.

Marcus Miller.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What is this?""

She didn't answer.

I picked up the document.

"Why is Dad's name here?""

Vanessa pulled out a chair.

"Because your father was involved in the original investment.""

I shook my head.

"You're lying.""

"Read the registration date.""

I looked.

The company had been established six years earlier.

Before my mother died.

Before Vanessa entered our family.

Before the BMW.

I looked at the director's details again.

My father's name.

His home address.

His signature.

I heard footsteps downstairs.

Then Dad knocked.

"Emma? Is everything okay?""

I turned toward the door.

Vanessa answered before I could.

"Come in, Marcus.""

Dad opened it.

He looked at the papers.

Then at Vanessa.

His expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get those?""

Vanessa pointed at the statement.

"Tell Emma.""

Dad didn't move.

"Not now.""

I stood.

"Tell me what?""

He looked at me.

"Emma, this isn't what it looks like.""

I laughed.

"That's what everyone says when they get caught.""

Dad flinched.

Vanessa leaned back.

"Your father helped establish Northbridge. He knows exactly where the money went.""

Dad's voice hardened.

"Stop twisting things.""

"Then explain.""

He looked at the document.

Then he sat on the edge of my bed.

"Northbridge was a property investment company.""

"Was?""

"It was established before your mother became sick. Your uncle Robert and I invested in a development project.""

I stared at him.

"With Mom's money?""

"No.""

"Then whose money?""

"Mine and Robert's.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"That isn't the full story.""

Dad looked at her.

"Enough.""

I stepped between them.

"Nobody is leaving this room until I get an answer.""

Dad rubbed his face.

"Your mother knew about the company. She initially supported the investment.""

"Did she invest?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"Twenty thousand dollars.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"From her personal savings?""

"Yes.""

"Was that money supposed to go to my inheritance?""

"No. It was a separate investment.""

I stared at him.

"Then why is my inheritance connected to the company?""

Dad looked down.

"Because when the development failed, Robert started moving money around to keep the company alive.""

I shook my head.

"You're telling me Uncle Robert used my mother's money to rescue a failed business?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"And I didn't know he had gone as far as accessing your trust.""

"Did you receive the $112,000?""

Dad looked at the statement.

"Northbridge received a transfer. I didn't personally receive it.""

"You're the director.""

"On paper.""

"Then who controlled the company?""

"Robert.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Convenient.""

Dad stood.

"You knew about this company too.""

"Yes, because Robert told me the money was being used to settle the family investment.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you buy Tyler a BMW?""

"Robert told me there was money available.""

"That wasn't an answer.""

She looked away.

Dad turned toward me.

"Emma, I need you to know that I never authorized anyone to withdraw your inheritance.""

"But you knew Mom invested in Northbridge.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew Robert was having financial problems.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you investigate?""

Dad's eyes filled.

"Because I thought it was separate from your trust.""

I looked at the statement.

The transfer had been made eleven months ago.

Dad had been listed as the director.

How could he not know?

"Did you sign any of these documents?""

He studied the papers.

"That signature looks like mine.""

I stepped back.

"Looks like yours?""

He took the statement.

"I signed company paperwork years ago. But I didn't approve this transfer.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Then someone forged your signature too.""

Dad turned toward her.

"Are you suggesting Robert did?""

She shrugged.

"Who else?""

I watched them.

For the first time, I realized that the two people standing in front of me might both be telling partial truths.

And neither wanted to admit what they knew.

Dad reached for his phone.

"I'm calling Daniel.""

"Good," I said.

He put the call on speaker.

Daniel answered.

"Marcus?""

"We found a statement connecting Northbridge Property Holdings to the $112,000 transfer. I'm listed as director.""

There was a pause.

"Send it to me immediately.""

Dad photographed the document.

Daniel examined it.

Then he asked:

"Marcus, did you ever serve as an officer of Northbridge?""

"Yes. Six years ago. I resigned after the development project collapsed.""

"Was your resignation formally filed?""

Dad went quiet.

"I thought it was.""

Daniel checked something.

"According to the company records, your resignation was never registered.""

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"That means you may still appear as an active director in the public filings.""

I stared at my father.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

Daniel's voice became serious.

"Marcus, I need you to come to my office tomorrow with every document you have relating to Northbridge. We need to determine who had signing authority and who controlled the accounts.""

Dad agreed.

Before ending the call, Daniel asked me to send him the bank statement and every document Vanessa had brought upstairs.

I photographed everything.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"Why did you bring these to me?""

She sat quietly.

"Because Robert told me to destroy them.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He called me this afternoon. He said the investigation was getting too close to Northbridge. He wanted me to remove the documents from the house and get rid of them.""

Dad stepped forward.

"Why didn't you?""

She looked at me.

"Because I realized he was going to leave me holding everything.""

I felt no sympathy.

"You were happy to take the money when you thought nobody would find out.""

She lowered her eyes.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

Then she continued.

"I thought I could repay it before anyone noticed.""

"With what?""

"Robert promised another payment.""

"From where?""

She didn't answer.

Dad shook his head.

"You bought a car with money you knew didn't belong to you.""

Vanessa looked toward Tyler's room.

"I wanted to give him something.""

I stared at her.

"You gave him something with my mother's name attached to it.""

She began crying.

But I had no tears left for her.

"Did you know Robert forged my signature?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

Dad stared at her.

"You knew?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"He told me the authorization was already approved. He said your mother had signed it before she died.""

"Then why did you use my name as the notary?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Why?""

She finally whispered:

"Because Robert told me the bank wouldn't process the paperwork without someone verifying your identity.""

Dad looked horrified.

"You certified a signature you never witnessed?""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"I thought it would be temporary.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Temporary? You stole three years of my life.""

She covered her face.

Dad told her to leave.

This time, she didn't argue.

She walked downstairs.

I heard the front door open and close.

A few seconds later, Tyler appeared.

"Where's Mom?""

Dad looked at him.

"She left.""

Tyler stared at the documents.

Then he looked at me.

"Emma, I need to tell you something.""

I was exhausted.

"What now?""

He swallowed.

"Uncle Robert called me last night.""

Dad turned.

"What did he say?""

Tyler took out his phone.

"He told me to say the BMW was bought with money from my business.""

I stared at him.

"He wanted you to lie?""

Tyler nodded.

"He said if the investigation got serious, I should tell everyone I had earned the money myself.""

Dad looked furious.

"Did you agree?""

"No.""

Tyler opened a recording app.

"I recorded the call.""

He pressed play.

Robert's voice came through the speaker.

"Listen, Tyler. Your mother has already made mistakes. Don't make this worse.""

Tyler's voice followed.

"What about Emma's money?""

Robert answered:

"That girl doesn't need all of it. She's going to waste years studying for a job that barely pays.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

Then Robert continued.

"If Marcus asks, tell him the BMW came from your business account. Nobody needs to know where the original funds came from.""

The recording ended.

Dad stared at Tyler.

"Why didn't you give us this earlier?""

"Because I was scared he'd cut me off.""

I looked at him.

"Now you know how it feels to lose something because someone else made a decision for you.""

Tyler nodded.

"I know.""

For once, he didn't argue.

That night, Daniel confirmed he had received the documents and recordings.

He also informed us that the bank had identified another transfer from Northbridge.

It was made just four days earlier.

The amount was $28,000.

And the destination was an account belonging to a company registered overseas.

Daniel promised to investigate.

But the next morning, something happened that none of us expected.

Dad received a formal letter.

It was from a debt recovery firm.

The letter stated that Northbridge Property Holdings had defaulted on a substantial business loan.

The amount outstanding was $186,000.

And because Marcus Miller was still listed as a company director, he had been named in the proceedings.

Dad read the letter twice.

Then he sat down.

"Robert has put the company debt in my name.""

I looked at him.

"Can he do that?""

Daniel's voice came through the phone.

"Not automatically. But we need to examine the guarantees and signatures.""

Dad stared at the page.

There was a copy of a personal guarantee attached.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

But the date was from last year.

Dad shook his head.

"I never signed this.""

I looked at the document.

The signature was almost perfect.

Almost.

Then I noticed the witness.

*Vanessa Miller.*

She had witnessed another signature she claimed was never signed in front of her.

And suddenly I understood.

Vanessa hadn't simply helped Robert steal my inheritance.

She had been signing off on documents that could destroy my father's financial future too.

But the final paragraph of the letter was worse.

It stated that the loan had been secured against a residential property.

Our house.

Dad looked up at me.

May you like

And whispered:

"Emma, we might lose the house.""
