Chapter 7: The Account Opened in My Name

The photograph Daniel sent was unmistakable.

Robert stood inside a bank branch, wearing a dark blue suit and the silver watch I'd seen him wearing at Christmas gatherings for years.

He was smiling at the camera.

Beside him stood a bank employee holding a folder.

Beneath the photograph was a date.

Three months before my mother died.

I stared at the screen.

"Why would Uncle Robert open an account in my name?""

Dad sat down slowly.

"I don't know.""

"Did he have my identification?""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Your mother kept copies of your birth certificate and Social Security information in her filing cabinet. Robert visited the house several times when she was sick.""

I remembered those visits.

Robert would arrive with flowers, sit beside Mom's bed, and ask whether she needed anything.

Sometimes he brought groceries.

Sometimes he offered to help Dad with paperwork.

I'd thought he was being kind.

I hadn't realized he was collecting information.

Dad called Daniel again.

"Can you tell us anything about the account?""

Daniel answered immediately.

"The bank has confirmed that Robert submitted an application using Emma's personal information. The account was opened under her name, but the contact details and correspondence address were different.""

"Whose address?""

"Robert's business office.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much went through it?""

"Approximately one hundred and twelve thousand dollars over several transactions. We're still tracing the exact source and destination of every payment.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Was the money from Rebecca's trust?""

"That's what the initial records indicate. Some of it may have originated from another investment account Rebecca maintained.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Did he withdraw it?""

"Not all of it. Some funds were transferred to other accounts. We have identified two recipients so far.""

"Who?""

"Robert's business account and a company registered under a different name.""

Dad frowned.

"What company?""

Daniel read the name.

"Northbridge Property Holdings.""

Dad looked confused.

"I've never heard of it.""

Neither had I.

Daniel continued.

"There's another matter. The bank has placed a temporary restriction on the remaining funds. Any recovery will depend on the investigation and the applicable legal process.""

I swallowed.

"Can I get the money back?""

"We'll do everything possible to trace it, Emma. But I don't want to promise something before we know exactly where it went.""

After the call, Dad and I sat in silence.

Then I asked the question I'd been avoiding.

"Did Mom know?""

Dad looked at me.

"Know what?""

"That Robert opened an account in my name.""

He shook his head.

"I don't think so.""

"But she knew he was taking money.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell you?""

Dad stared at the photograph.

"Maybe she was afraid he'd do something worse.""

I looked at the letter she'd left me.

Look at the records. Look at the dates.

Mom had known something was wrong.

She had tried to protect me.

And while she was fighting for her health, someone she considered family had been using her trust as a personal bank account.

My phone buzzed.

It was a message from Tyler.

*Tyler:* Can we talk? Please don't tell your dad.

I looked toward the stairs.

Dad noticed.

"Who is it?""

"Tyler.""

He sighed.

"What does he want?""

"I don't know.""

Dad considered it.

"Don't meet him alone. If he has something important to say, he can say it here.""

I replied.

*Emma:* Come downstairs. Dad will be here.

Five minutes later, Tyler appeared.

He looked different.

His hair was messy, his designer jacket was missing, and he was holding a thick envelope.

He placed it on the coffee table.

"Mom doesn't know I have this.""

Dad looked at him.

"What is it?""

"Documents from her filing cabinet.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside were dealership receipts, bank statements, and several printed emails.

One email caught my attention.

It was from Robert to Vanessa.

*Subject: Final Distribution*

Once the remaining amount reaches the secondary account, we need to close the old trust connection. Marcus must not become aware of the additional balance.

I read it twice.

Dad leaned over my shoulder.

"How did you get this?""

Tyler rubbed his hands together.

"I found it last night. Mom was on the phone with Uncle Robert. They were arguing about the BMW payment.""

"What did you hear?"" I asked.

"He said the car was supposed to be purchased using the account under your name. Mom said the money hadn't cleared yet, so she used the college savings account instead.""

I stared at him.

"She knew about the other account?""

Tyler nodded.

"She said Robert had promised her that there was more money coming.""

Dad took the email.

"Why didn't you tell us sooner?""

Tyler looked down.

"Because I was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

I almost laughed.

"You were scared of losing everything while driving around in a car bought with everything I had?""

He flinched.

"I know.""

I looked at the receipts.

There was a payment of $2,400 to a company called Westbrook Financial Services.

Another payment of $6,700.

Then a handwritten note:

Balance due before transfer — $18,000.

I turned toward Tyler.

"What's Westbrook Financial?""

He hesitated.

"Uncle Robert said it was a company helping with the business.""

"What business?""

"The property company.""

Dad looked up.

"Northbridge?""

Tyler nodded.

"That's what he called it.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you ever work for them?""

"Not really.""

"Then why did you receive eighteen thousand dollars?""

Tyler looked embarrassed.

"Robert said he needed someone younger to appear as a business partner. He told Mom it would help with financing.""

Dad's expression changed.

"Did you sign anything?""

Tyler swallowed.

"Yes.""

"What?""

"A company registration form. Some bank documents.""

"Did you understand them?""

"No.""

Dad stood.

"Tyler, you may have been used in this scheme too.""

Tyler's eyes filled.

"I didn't know.""

I looked at him.

"Then help us prove it.""

He nodded.

For the first time, he seemed willing to do something other than defend his mother.

That afternoon, Daniel came to the house.

He examined the emails and receipts.

His expression grew more serious with every page.

"These are important," he said.

"We'll preserve them and provide copies to the appropriate investigators.""

Dad pointed to the Westbrook payment.

"Could this be connected to the other account?""

Daniel nodded.

"Possibly. I need the full records.""

He turned to Tyler.

"Did you sign any loan or business documents?""

"Yes.""

"Do you have copies?""

Tyler shook his head.

"My uncle kept everything.""

Daniel wrote something down.

"Then we'll request those records.""

I handed him the printed email.

"Can you tell whether Vanessa knew the money belonged to me?""

Daniel read the message carefully.

"Based on this email, she appears to have known that money was being moved through an account connected to you.""

My chest tightened.

"Then she knew.""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"She may have known more than she has admitted. But we should distinguish what the documents prove from what we still need to establish.""

Dad nodded.

Daniel closed the envelope.

"I also need to contact the bank regarding the account opened in Emma's name. There may be additional identity-theft issues.""

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

"Emma, I want you to prepare a list of every account you've personally opened, every address you've lived at, and every phone number you've used. We need to establish what was yours and what someone else created using your information.""

I nodded.

That evening, I sat at my desk making the list.

My phone numbers.

My addresses.

My old email accounts.

Every bank account I'd ever opened.

Then I remembered something.

When I was seventeen, Mom had asked me to sign several papers while she was in the hospital.

She had said they were school documents.

I had signed them without reading carefully because she was weak and I wanted to help.

I searched through my old email.

There was a message from Robert dated the following week.

*Robert:* Emma, your mother asked me to keep copies of the paperwork you signed. Everything is being handled.

I stared at the message.

Then I opened the attachment.

It was a scanned authorization form.

My name appeared at the bottom.

But this time, the document wasn't for the trust.

It was an application for financial representation.

The form granted Robert permission to access certain accounts in my name.

The authorization was supposedly valid until I turned twenty-one.

I felt sick.

I immediately called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

"Emma?""

"I found another document.""

I sent it to him.

He was silent for nearly a minute.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Emma, this is important. The document you just sent appears to have been used to open the secondary account.""

"Can he still access my money?""

"Not without further verification, but we need to act quickly.""

"Can you cancel it?""

"We'll challenge it and notify the bank immediately.""

I stared at the screen.

Then Daniel asked:

"Do you remember signing this document in front of a witness?""

"No.""

"Do you recognize the notary's name?""

I looked at the bottom.

My stomach dropped.

The notary was listed as:

*Vanessa Miller.*

I whispered the name.

Daniel heard me.

"Emma, are you certain?""

I looked toward the bedroom door.

Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

She had heard me.

And she was holding a small leather folder.

"Emma," she said quietly, "we need to talk.""

I ended the call.

"What do you want?""

She stepped into the room and closed the door.

Then she placed the folder on my desk.

Inside were several original documents.

One of them had my mother's signature.

Another had mine.

And the final document was a bank statement showing the destination of the last $112,000.

Vanessa looked at me.

"I didn't steal all of it.""

I stared at her.

"Who did?""

She swallowed.

Then she whispered:

"Your uncle Robert wasn't the person who received the largest payment.""

She turned the statement toward me.

The recipient was a company registered under a name I had never heard before.

But the director's name was familiar.

May you like

It was Marcus Miller.

My father.
