Chapter 6: The Man Who Helped Them Steal My Future
Robert walked into the bedroom as though he owned the house.
He wore a charcoal overcoat, polished black shoes, and the expensive watch he'd been showing off at family gatherings for years.
Vanessa followed behind him.
Her handbag was clutched tightly against her side.
Robert looked at the open wooden box.
Then at the papers scattered across the floor.
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"What have you done?"" he asked.
Dad stood between him and the box.
"That's an interesting question coming from you.""
Robert gave a nervous laugh.
"Marcus, I don't know what Vanessa has told you, but this has gotten completely out of hand.""
I picked up the voice recorder.
"Did you tell Vanessa to forge my signature?""
His eyes moved toward me.
"Emma, you don't understand the situation.""
"Then explain it.""
"Your mother and I had an agreement.""
Dad stepped forward.
"What agreement?""
Robert removed his gloves.
"Rebecca knew I was having financial difficulties. She wanted to help.""
"By giving you my daughter's inheritance?""
"Don't twist my words.""
Dad pointed toward the box.
"She wrote down every payment you took from her.""
Robert's face tightened.
"Those were loans.""
"Where are the repayments?""
"That's between Rebecca and me.""
"Rebecca is dead, Robert.""
The room fell silent.
Dad's voice cracked.
"You borrowed money from my dying wife and threatened her when she refused to give you more.""
Robert looked away.
"She was confused toward the end.""
I felt something cold move through my chest.
"Don't you dare.""
He glanced at me.
"Emma—"
"Don't talk about my mother like that.""
He raised both hands.
"I'm only saying she wasn't thinking clearly. She was taking medication. She was frightened. She misunderstood things.""
Dad moved closer.
"She was thinking clearly enough to record you.""
Robert froze.
Vanessa immediately looked at him.
I held up the recorder.
"We heard everything.""
For the first time, Robert looked genuinely alarmed.
"What recording?""
"The one where you told Vanessa to make sure I never found out how much money was in the trust.""
Robert turned toward Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"I didn't know they had it.""
Dad looked between them.
"So you were working together.""
Robert sighed.
"Marcus, listen to me. There were circumstances you don't know about.""
"Then explain them.""
He walked toward the window.
"I had business problems. Serious ones. Rebecca knew about them.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"What business problems?""
Robert hesitated.
"Investments.""
"What kind?""
"Property.""
"How much did you lose?""
Robert didn't answer.
I looked at the bank statements.
"Did Mom give you money because you were in debt?""
He glanced at me.
"She wanted to help her family.""
"She wanted to help you, and you repaid her by taking more.""
Robert's face reddened.
"You have no idea what it's like to have responsibilities.""
I laughed.
"I work two jobs and pay for my own education.""
"That's different.""
"How?""
He didn't answer.
Dad picked up the photocopied amendment.
"Is this real?""
Robert looked at it.
"Rebecca signed it.""
"Daniel says there is no original.""
"Daniel doesn't know everything.""
"Did you create this document?""
Robert's jaw tightened.
"Vanessa handled the paperwork.""
Vanessa immediately turned toward him.
"Robert!""
He looked at her.
"What?""
"You said you had the original.""
"I said I had a copy.""
"You told me it was legally valid!""
Robert shrugged.
"I told you what I knew.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she turned to Dad.
"Marcus, I was trying to help.""
Dad shook his head.
"Stop.""
"I trusted Robert.""
"You trusted him enough to transfer seventy-four thousand dollars into your personal account?""
"He said it was approved!""
"By whom?""
Vanessa looked down.
Nobody spoke.
Then Tyler appeared in the doorway.
"What's going on?""
He looked at Robert.
"Uncle Robert?""
Robert's expression softened immediately.
"Tyler, good. Maybe you can explain things to your father.""
Tyler looked confused.
"What?""
Robert walked toward him.
"Your mother and I were trying to help you get established. We wanted to make sure you had a chance to build your future.""
I watched Tyler's face.
"By taking mine?""
He looked at me.
"Emma, I didn't know all this.""
Robert waved dismissively.
"Nobody stole anything. It was a family arrangement.""
Tyler frowned.
"Then why did Mom tell me not to mention the money?""
Vanessa snapped.
"Tyler, stop talking.""
He looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because you don't understand.""
"I understand that I got eighteen thousand dollars from Emma's trust.""
Robert's face hardened.
"That money was intended to help the family.""
Tyler shook his head.
"No. You told Mom it was her decision.""
Vanessa looked horrified.
"Tyler!""
He continued.
"You told me Dad knew about everything. You told me Emma was getting financial help from somewhere else.""
I stared at him.
"Where did you think my money was going?""
He looked ashamed.
"I didn't know.""
Robert laughed bitterly.
"This is exactly why young people shouldn't be involved in financial matters.""
I stepped forward.
"Then why did you involve yourself in mine?""
Robert's eyes narrowed.
"Because your mother was making terrible decisions.""
"She left money for me.""
"She left money that could have helped several people.""
"It wasn't yours.""
He raised his voice.
"Your mother was going to leave me with nothing!""
Dad stared at him.
"That's what this is about?""
Robert turned toward him.
"You don't understand. I had creditors calling every day. I had property payments.
I had people threatening legal action. Rebecca had enough money to help me, and she refused.""
"Because it wasn't hers to give away," Dad replied.
"It was family money!""
"It was Emma's money!""
Robert slapped his hand against the wardrobe.
"She was a child!""
"And now she's an adult who knows exactly what you did.""
Robert looked at me.
His expression was no longer apologetic.
"You think becoming a nurse will make you successful? You think you're better than everyone because you work hard?""
I stared at him.
"No. I just think I deserve to keep what my mother left me.""
He shook his head.
"You're going to destroy this family over money.""
I answered before Dad could.
"You destroyed this family when you decided my future was yours to sell.""
For several seconds, Robert said nothing.
Then he reached into his coat and pulled out his phone.
"Fine. If you want the truth, I'll give it to you.""
He opened a photograph.
It showed a document on a desk.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
My mother's signature.
"This is the original amendment," he said.
"I have the full version.""
Dad reached for the phone.
Robert pulled it away.
"You won't get it until you stop making accusations.""
"Give me the document," Dad said.
"Not until we have an agreement.""
Daniel had warned us not to negotiate privately.
I remembered his words.
Preserve every document.
Do not allow anyone to move money.
I stepped between them.
"Then send it to Daniel.""
Robert looked irritated.
"You're not in charge here.""
"No, but I'm the beneficiary.""
He laughed.
"You're an eighteen-year-old girl who doesn't understand what she's getting involved in.""
"I'm nineteen.""
"And you still don't understand.""
He turned to Dad.
"Marcus, I'll make this simple. You tell Daniel to stop the investigation, and I'll help recover some of the money.""
Dad stared at him.
"Some?""
Robert shrugged.
"Not everything is recoverable.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"How much did you take?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"How much?""
Robert looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the floor.
Finally, he said:
"Forty-two thousand.""
Dad closed his eyes.
I gripped the wardrobe.
"Forty-two thousand dollars?""
"That was money I needed.""
"From my mother?""
"From the trust.""
"How?""
Robert's voice rose.
"Because I had access!""
The room went silent.
He seemed to realize what he'd just admitted.
Dad slowly took out his phone.
"Say that again.""
Robert stared at him.
"What?""
"You said you had access.""
"I meant I had access to the paperwork.""
Dad pressed the screen.
Daniel's number appeared.
Robert took a step backward.
"Who are you calling?""
"The attorney.""
Vanessa grabbed Robert's sleeve.
"Don't say anything else.""
He shook her off.
"You should have kept your daughter under control, Marcus.""
Dad's face changed.
"Get out.""
Robert stared at him.
"You're throwing me out?""
"Now.""
Robert looked at Vanessa.
"Come on.""
But she didn't move.
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned toward me.
"Enjoy your little nursing dream, Emma. You have no idea what you're going to find when the rest of this comes out.""
Then he left.
Vanessa remained standing in the bedroom.
Her face had lost all color.
Dad looked at her.
"Did you know he took forty-two thousand dollars?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know the amount.""
"Did you know he was involved?""
She didn't answer.
I picked up my mother's letter.
"Did Mom know you were working with him?""
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something that resembled regret.
"I never wanted things to happen this way.""
I stared at her.
"How did you want them to happen?""
She looked down.
"Robert told me the money was going to be transferred to a family investment account. He said your mother had already approved it.""
"And the BMW?""
She swallowed.
"Tyler needed a car.""
I shook my head.
"You could have bought him a used Honda.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I wanted him to have something good.""
"And I wanted to become a nurse.""
She looked away.
Dad told her to leave the room.
She walked downstairs without another word.
A few minutes later, Daniel called.
Dad explained what Robert had admitted.
Daniel was quiet for a long moment.
Then he said:
"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully. If Robert accessed the trust through a fraudulent amendment, this may involve more than the money we've already identified.""
Dad looked at me.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel answered:
"I've just received information from the financial institution. There was another account connected to Rebecca's trust.""
My heart stopped.
"Another account?""
"Yes. One that was never included in the original withdrawal report.""
Dad gripped the phone.
"How much?""
Daniel paused.
"Approximately one hundred and twelve thousand dollars.""
I couldn't breathe.
One hundred and twelve thousand.
My mother had left me far more than I'd ever imagined.
And someone had been moving it for years.
Then Daniel added something that changed everything.
"The account was closed two months ago. But the final transfer wasn't made to Robert or Vanessa.""
"Who received it?"" Dad asked.
Daniel's answer came slowly.
"Emma, according to the preliminary record, the final recipient was an account opened in your name.""
I stared at him.
An account in my name?
I'd never opened another account.
I'd never received that money.
And if the account existed, someone had been using my identity for years.
Dad whispered, "Who opened it?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"That's what we're trying to establish. But there's one problem.""
"What problem?""
"The account application contains a photograph of the person who opened it.""
A pause.
"And Marcus, it's not Vanessa.""
Dad looked at me.
Daniel continued.
"It's your uncle Robert.""
I felt the room spin.
May you like
Then Daniel sent the photograph.
And the date printed beneath it was from three months before my mother died.
